The Photo-reproducibility and Stability of Long Chain Fatty Acid Containing Azobenzene (아조벤젠을 함유한 장쇄 지방산의 광재현성과 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • The Synthesis of long chain fatty acid containing azobenzene and $(C_{n}-Azo)$ was optimized, starting from p-(p'-hydroxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid and the product of reaction containing azobenzene chromophores was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometery in chloroform solvent at the various temperature. In addition, Reversibility and stability of azo compounds have been measured by means of Ultraviolet and the structure of these compound were ascertained by means of FT-IR and NMR. Recrystallization of reaction product in the solvent results the experimental yield obtained about 62.93% p-(p'-octadecyloxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid. Long chain azobenzene derivatives in chloroform solution are induced photoisomerization by u. v. and visible light irradiation. The solution of long chain fatty acids$(C_{n}-Azo)$ containing azobenzene are possible of being applied to functional molecular devices such as photomemory and light switching.

Simultaneous determination of phytochemical constituents in Paeonia lactiflora extracts using the HPLC-UV method

  • Qantitative analysis of six compounds: (+)-catechin, benzoic acid, gallic acid methyl ester, paeonol, paeoniflorin, and albiflorin from Paeonia lactiflora extracts was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography and an ultraviolet (UV) detector, following different extraction methods. A reverse-phase column was used in a gradient elution system, and UV detection was performed at 280 nm. The results showed that the quantity of paeoniflorin was the highest in ethanol and water extracts (73.89 and 57.87 mg/g, respectively) among the six compounds. This study contributes a good analysis method for the contents of P. lactiflora and would be propitious for developing medicines and functional foods.

Antimicrobial Activities of Extracts from Several Native and Exotic Plants in Korea (수 종의 한국자생식물과 귀화식물 추출액이 토양미생물에 미치는 항균활성)

  • The soil pH favored by several native plants in Korea ranges 5.33∼7.20, while a more acidic range of pH 3.95∼6.10 is acceptable to exotic plants. Ethanol extracts of native and exotic plants in Korea were investigated for antimicrobial activity against Bacillus sphiaericus 2362, Bacillus thuringiensis var. subtilis and Bacillus thuringiensis var. cereus and Actinomycetes. Higher antimicrobial activity was observed from the extract of exotic plants than those of native plants. The ethanol extract of Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior was observed to have the highest antimicrobial activity against 4 species of soil microbes. Especially, antimicrobial activity of Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior showed the largest clear zone of 48mm in Actinomycetes. Larger clear zone was formed in the order of caffeic acid, benzoic acid and ρ -coumaric acid among the nine chemical compounds. Accordingly, the antimicrobial activity of Ambrosia artemisiifolia var elatior against Actinomycetes was found to be due to the synergetic effect of chemical compounds.

  • The dynamic interactions between benzoic acid derivative ($pH{\approx}7.0$)(guest) and ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (${\beta}$-CD)(host) were investigated in an aqueous solutions in terms of ultrasonic absorption in the frequency range 0.2 MHz ~ 50 MHz with emphasis on the low-frequency range below 1 MHz at $25^{\circ}C$. We show that the interaction of ${\beta}$-CD and benzoic acid derivative complies with a typical spectrum of a single relaxation process around a few MHz. The ultrasonic relaxation observed in these solutions was due to a perturbation of a chemical equilibrium related to a reaction of an inclusion complex formed by the host and guest. The rate constant ($k_b=7.48{\times}10^6M^{-1}s^{-1}$) and equilibrium constant ($K=68.6M^{-1}$) were determined from the concentration dependences of benzoic acid on the relaxation frequency. The standard volume change (${\Delta}V=10.6{\times}10^{-6}m^3mol^{-1}$) of the reaction was also computed from the maximum absorption per wavelength. It was found that the hydrophobicity of guest molecules played an important role in the formation of the inclusion complex.

Studies on the Chemical Characteristics of Korean Propolis (국내산 프로폴리스의 화학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to analyzed the chemical compositions of Korean propolis. In proximate analysis, the moisture, crude protein. crude fat. ash and carbohydrate content of Yecheon and Youngwol propolis were 3.25 and 3.97%, 9.82 anti 7.04%, 48.25 and 50.7%, 3.91 and 5.89%, 34.77 and 32.4%, respectively. The highest level of P, Ca and Cu were revealed at Youngwol propolis as much as 184.15, 128.32 and 1.77ppm. As a harmful heavy meta1s, the Cr. AS, Cd, find Pb level of Australian propolis were revealed 2.2888, 0.9534, 0.2611 find 2.5595ppm. However, Korean propolis was not detected the Cd. The benzoic acid content of Yecheon and Youngwol propolis were 1,130.6 ppm and 1,049.1 ppm. And than Chinese product revealed the highest levee of benzoic acrid content. The linoleic and linolenic acid content of Yecheon and Youngwol propolis were 47.6:70.0 and 37.3:47.0mg/100g, respectively.

Isolation of Antimicrobial Components from Moutan Cortex (목단피로부터 항균활성 성분의 분리)

  • To evaluate antimicrobial activity of Moutan cortex the compounds isolated from $CHCl_3$ and EtOAc fractions of Moutan cortex were subjected to eight pathogenic strains. Benzoic acid, witch was identified from the $CHCl_3$ fraction, had MICs with $625{\sim}1,250\;{\mu}g/ml$ against all of the strains tested. Methyl gallate, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, gallic acid and $1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-gallyol-{\beta}-D-glucose$, which were identified from the EtOAc fraction, showed the antimicrobial activity, and the methyl gallate had the widest antimicrobial activity with MICs of $625{\sim}5,000\;{\mu}g/ml$ against all strains tested. p-Hydroxy benzoic acid showed MICs of $1,250{\sim}2,500\;{\mu}g/ml$ against all of the strains tested except C.albicans. Gallic acid had the best antimicrobial activities with MICs against the Shigella dysenteriae and Streptococcus mutans-strains of 78.1 and $312.5\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively, but not against the C. albicans. And $1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-gallyol-{\beta}-D-glucose$ had the best antimicrobial activitie with MICs against the B. cereus, Staph. epidermidis and C. albicans strains of 39.1, 39.1 and $156.3\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively, but not against the E. coli and Shig. Dysenteriae.

Variation of Bioactive Component Contents in Plant Parts of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (작약 식물체 부위별 성분 함량 변이)

  • Comparative analysis of paeoniflorin, albiflorin and phenolic compound contents as bioactive components of peony was performed by Reverse Phase-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RPHPLC) using the four- year-old peony which were different plant parts and pretreatment, such as removing or unremoving the cork layer of peony root before drying. The contents of paeoniflorin, albiflorin, (+)-taxifolin $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$, (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin were the highest in rhizome part, but those of gallic acid and benzoic acid in the leaves were higher than other parts. The contents of albiflorin, gallic acid, benzoic acid and (-)-epicatechin in the cork layer were higher than in those of the core, but the contents of paeoniflorin, (+)-taxifolin $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ and (+)-catechin in the core were higher than those in the cork layer. In general, the rhizome part of peony root has been used only propagation purpose, but this part contained high contents of bioactive component. Therefore, it is needed that medicinal application of rhizome part in peony root was firmly investigated. Also, In the use of peony root for medicinal purpose, the use of peony root with cork layer can be efficient way on the practical use of useful components and the reduction of labor for removing the cork layer.

Assessment of Estimated Daily Intakes of Preservatives in the Korean Population (한국인의 식이를 통한 보존료의 일일추정섭취량과 안전성평가)

  • In this study, the daily intake of preservatives in the Korean population was estimated, using data from national health and nutrition studies regarding the concentration of preservatives in each type of food, food intake by sex, age group, and weight. The level of safety of these preservatives was evaluated via comparisons with the acceptable daily intake (ADI) data established by the Joint FAO/WHO expert committee on food additives (JECFA). The Estimated daily intake (EDI) of sorbic acid is 495.85 ${\mu}g$/kg bw, benzoic acid is 215.34 ${\mu}g$/kg bw and parahydroxybenzoate is 5.01 ${\mu}g$/kg bw per day each. Their percentages in relation to ADI are 2, 4.3, and 0.1%, respectively. The comparatively high-consuming groups were taking sorbic acid 1,012.06 ${\mu}g$/kg bw, benzoic acid 229.56 ${\mu}g$/kg bw, and parahydroxybenzoate 11.58 ${\mu}g$/kg bw per day, and their intake levels as a percentage of ADI were 4.1, 4.6, 0.1%, all within safe levels. Males were found to have taken more benzoic acid than women, whereas we detected no sighificant differences in the intakes of sorbic acid and parahydroxybenzoate between males and females. The EDI of sorbic acid, benzoic acid, and parahydroxybenzoate were lower than the ADI in all age groups studied.

  • A pyrolysis gas-chromatographic method (Py-GC) was utilized for the identification as well as the content measurement of textile materials. Py-GC was applied to natural cotton fiber, synthetic polyester fiber, and their blended fabrics. The characteristic peaks originated from thermally decomposed products were observed, and the area of peak increased with the content of polyester. The products of pyrolized polyester were identified as benzoic acid terephthalic acid, and vinyl benzoic acid, which were characterized by mass spectrometry. This analytic method of offered a quantitative means to identify the content of cotton and polyester.

  • The Synthesis of azobenzene containing long chain fatty acid and poly vinyl alcohol by esterification reaction($C_{n}-Azo-PVA$) was optimized, starting from P-(P'-hydroxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid and the product of reaction containing azobenzene chromophores was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometery in toluene solvent at room temperature. In addition, UV absorption spectra of Langmmuir Blodggett (LB) film deposited on quartz plate have been measured and the structure of these compounds were ascertained by means of Ultraviolet and FT-IR. Recrystallization of reaction product in the solvent results the experimental yield obtained about 22.27% P-(P'-octadecyloxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid-poly vinyl alcohol. Long chain azobenzene derivative-poly vinyl alcohols are induced phtoisomerization by u, v, and visible light irradiation. The LB film of azobenzene containing long chain fatty acids($C_{18}-Azo-PVA$) are possible of being applied to functional molecular devices such as photomemory and light switching.
