  • The VE/LCC study on the existing multi-utility tunnel examined the economical feasibility of the collective area through the cost-benefit analysis of the ten major routes of Seoul for the benefit (7 items) and the cost (5 items) through quantitative methods. In this paper, we analyzed the economic efficiency of 61 sectors by adding 3 items (reduced traffic accident, reduced vehicle noise, social-economic loss). The reduced traffic accident item is an improvement of the traffic accident cost that can be saved by the implementation of the project, and the reduced vehicle noise item is an indicator of the amount of noise change caused by the implement of the business. Finally, the social-economic loss items represent the impact on the local economy due to the construction of the multi-utility tunnel. The amounts of the additional items were compared and items added in the open type and tunnel type multi-utility tunnel were analyzed for each analysis. Result on the analysis, it analyzed the items applied to the basic and detail models in the economic evaluation of the multi-utility tunnel design, and makes it possible to evaluate the economic efficiency more efficiently. The economic evaluation of the basic and detailed models including the items presented in this study will be often used in the design of the multi-utility tunnel design.

  • In Korea, the industry and marketing of livestock has grown because of increases in consumers' income and changes in food consumption trends. Livestock production and consumption increased tenfold from 1970 to 2018, and this rise will continue. However, the quality of marketing information for Korean livestock has remained low. The Korea Institute for Animal Products Quality Evaluation (KAPE) operates programs that provide marketing information on livestock, but the social benefits of these programs have not been objectively evaluated. The purpose of this study was to estimate the social benefit of the programs offering marketing information on Korean livestock. Survey and analysis using an economic model (double-bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation model), revealed a few findings. First, the users of the marketing information programs offered by KAPE recognized the value of these programs and demonstrated their willingness to pay for this marketing information. Second, the social values of the programs offering marketing information on livestock were estimated as 1.1 billion won (marketing information on main livestock) or 5.3 billion won (price information on poultry), and these social values were 2 or 6 times greater than the cost to operate the programs for offering information. Finally, the program that provides marketing information on domestic livestock provides sufficient social benefits, so KAPE should expand these programs.

  • Due to the progress of the 4th industrial revolution and the COVID-19 pandemic, the subscription economy was rapidly expanding. In particular, the subscription economy was expected to expand further as the servicing of products(servitization) rapidly progresses. In this study, we tried to empirically analyze the factors that promote and hinder the spread of the subscription economy from the consumer's point of view. To this end, based on the Service Profit Chain (SPC) model, which identified mechanisms leading from quality to satisfaction, loyalty, and performance, a research model was established by combining the framework of the Value-based Adoption Model (VAM), which covers both benefit and sacrifice factors. Usefulness and convenience were derived as benefit factors, and perceived risks and perceived costs were derived as sacrifice factors. The effects of these factors on satisfaction and continuous use intention were analyzed. For empirical analysis, a survey was conducted targeting people who have experience in subscription economy, and 300 effective samples were analyzed. The analysis was performed as a structural equation model using AMOS 24. As a result of the empirical study, it was found that convenience had a significant positive (+) effect on satisfaction. Perceived risk and perceived cost were analyzed to have a negative (-) effect on satisfaction. On the other hand, usefulness was found to have no significant effect on satisfaction. The influences affecting satisfaction were in the order of perceived cost, convenience, and perceived risk. Satisfaction was found to have a significant positive (+) effect on continuous use intention. The results of this study were considered meaningful in that they broadened the horizons of research by combining existing validated models at the academic level and testing their validity, and found that perceived cost was still an important factor at the practical level.

  • Precise coating weight control is very important issue on quality and minimizing operating costs on continuous galvanizing line. These days, many steel making companies are having a new understanding of cost importance by rise raw material prices and customer's requirement for cost reduction. Dongbu steel also meets these situations and decided to develop the technologies. Dongbu Steel developed Integrated coating weight control system jointly with Objective Control Ltd. and installed 2CGL and 4CGL. Several technological functions were developed and realized to achieve true hands-off operation and maximum cost benefit by combining model-based preset and dynamic prediction models. We also installed it on 1 CGL on April, 2008. This paper will present the interface, functions and application result of the integrated coating weight control system including Zn saving and coating weight uniformity.

  • This study was undertaken to examine the profit efficiency and its determining factors, the investment opportunity, and the challenges of shea butter producers in the northern region of Ghana. The methods employed in this research were the Stochastic Profit Frontier (SPF) model, gain-cost and investment return analyses, as well as Kendall's W statistic using primary data collected from 120 purposively-selected respondents. Results from the analysis indicated that profit efficiency was positively influenced by sex, household size, marital status, educational level, transportation cost, store rent, and price of shea nut with a gain in profit efficiency of 58.5%. The investment analysis demonstrated a net gain per person of $8,077 equivalent to GH₵ 28,270 Ghanaian cedi (GH₵) using 2016 exchange rate (GH₵ 3.5 = $1). Among the challenges identified, the poor quality of shea nuts was the most prioritised challenge with 72.8% agreement among the respondents. Based on these findings, it was recommended that proper training and education, as well as improvement in shea nut quality, should be promoted to improve the profit efficiency of shea butter producers.

  • This study presents a noble scheme for distributed and parallel simulations with optimized agent placement for simulation instances. The traditional parallel simulation has some limitations in that it does not provide sufficient performance even though using multiple resources. The main reason for this discrepancy is that supporting parallelism inevitably requires additional costs in addition to the base simulation cost. We present a comprehensive study of parallel simulation architectures, execution flows, and characteristics. Then, we identify critical challenges for optimizing large simulations for parallel instances. Based on our cost-benefit analysis, we propose a novel approach to overcome the performance constraints of agent-based parallel simulations. We also propose a solution for eliminating the synchronizing cost among local instances. Our method ensures balanced performance through optimal deployment of agents to local instances and an adaptive agent placement scheme according to the simulation load. Additionally, our empirical evaluation reveals that the proposed model achieves better performance than conventional methods under several conditions.

  • Virtual Manufacturing is a technology facilitating effective development and agile production of products via computer models representing physical and logical schema and the behavior of the real manufacturing systems. For the successful application of this technology, a virtual plant as a well-designed and integrated environment is essential. We propose a series of systematic approaches and effective methods for construction and operation of a virtual plant in this paper, such as a 3-D CAD modeling, cell and line simulations and databases. We developed key technologies for measuring and 3-D CAD modeling of many equipments, facilities and structures of the buildings. In order to study the benefit of virtual manufacturing, we constructed a sophisticated virtual plant model of a Korean automotive company's body shop, and conducted precise simulations of unit cell, lines and the whole plant. We could obtain the benefit of savings in time and cost in many manufacturing preparation activities in the new car development processes.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a user-friendly computer model for economic analysis on the commercial egg production that could help the egg farmer make managerial diagnosis and rational decision in the changing environment. To raise the adequacy of the model, the program was run for every sample and adjusted to fit the data. The model, programmed with Microsoft QuickBASIC, was a user-friendly computer program in supporting the Korean language. The basic analytical tool used in the study was an engineering-type computerized simulation model which incorporates a cost-benefit analysis of a full-time egg farmer. The computer model developed in this study may be the powerful analytical tool used to evaluate both a managerial decision whether to alter the production system and its impact on production, costs, revenue, and profits. Ultimately, the program is expected to enable the egg farmer to make managerial planning and diagnosis. The program can also calculate the values of economic variables at user-chosen incremental values of market eggs and feed prices. It provides the information on the profit and cost. This may lead the egg farmer, by allowing to establish the best managerial strategy, to increase the profit aor to lessen the cost. The results of this study could be utilized in the evaluation and improvement of the management. It also may be utilized for the researchers and guiding farmers in collecting and analyzing the data on the laying hen. In particular, such a program would be potentially useful to researchers who wish to quickly estimate profits associated with various laying hen treatments. The program could also benefit the egg farmer interested in making managerial decisions based on either current or predicted market conditions. The model would make the egg farmer respond actively to the information-oriented society by promoting to use personal computer.

  • Manufacturing Production System (MPS) has been widely accepted in construction area for the productivity improvement. However, the MPS does not always provide cost and time saving. It often caused more delays and increased project cost. Therefore the use of the MPS technique, systematic decision-making process is needed by reviewing various project parameters such as cost and time. This study includes extensive literature reviews and case studies on MPS. As a result, a decision-making model is proposed. The decision-making flowchart and decision-making model are developed in three steps: (1) identification and categorization of decision-making factors; (2) calculations of benefits, cost, and duration in accordance with the location and the production capacity of the factory; (3) comparisons of MPS and on-site assembly by varying the locations and sizes of the factory

  • The accident risks in the marine environment are increasing because of the tendency to build faster and larger ships. To secure ship safety, risk-based ship design (RBSD) was recently suggested based on a formal safety assessment (FSA). In the process of RBSD, a ship designer decides which risk reduction option is most cost-effective in the design stage using a cost-benefit analysis (CBA). There are three dimensions of risk in this CBA: fatality, environment, and asset. In this paper, we present an approach to estimate the environmental costs based on the size of an oil tanker involved in an accident using a neural network. An appropriate neural network model is suggested for the estimation, and the neural network is trained using IOPCF data. Finally, the learned neural network is compared with the cost regression equation by IMO MEPC 62/WP.13 (2011).
