  • Asymmetric beams cause complicated vibration phenomena due to the inherent bending-torsion coupled vibration. In this paper, an exact dynamic element matrix for the bending-torsion coupled vibration of asymmetric beam is derived. An application of the derived exact dynamic element matrix is demonstrated by an illustrative example, wherein the natural frequencies by the proposed modeling method are compared with those available in the literature. Another numerical example is also illustrated which deals with a general beam with joints. The numerical study shows that the exact dynamic element model is useful for the dynamic analysis of asymmetric bending-torsion coupled beams.

  • Beams are often subject to bending-torsion coupled vibration due to mass coupling and/or stiffness coupling. This paper proposes a dynamic analysis method using the exact dynamic element for bending-torsion coupled vibration of general plane beam structures with joints. The exact dynamic element matrix for a bending-torsion coupled beam is derived, and the detailed procedure of using the exact dynamic element matrix is also presented. Three examples are provided for validating and illustrating the proposed method. The numerical study proves the proposed method to be useful for dynamic analysis of bending-torsion coupled beam structures with joints.

  • This paper proposes a dynamic analysis method for obtaining exact solutions of composite Timoshenko beams, which are inherently subjected to both the bending , and torsional vibrations. In this paper, the bending-torsion coupled vibration of composite Timoshenko beam is rigorously modelled and analyzed. Two numerical examples are provided to validate and illustrate the bending-torsion coupled vibration of composite Timoshenko beam structure. The numerical examples prove that the proposed method is of great use for the dynamic analysis of dynamic structures composed of multiply connected composite Timoshenko beams.

  • Although asymmetric beams are widely used in industry, few research results are available on the dynamic modeling and analysis of structure including asymmetric beams. Asymmetric beams cause complicated vibration phenomena due to the inherent bending-torsion coupled vibration. In this paper, an exact dynamic element matrix for the bending-torsion coupled vibration of asymmetric beam is derived. The application of the derived exact dynamic element matrix is demonstrated by some illustrative examples wherein the natural frequencies by the proposed modeling method are compared with those available in the literature. • A CTBA(Coupled Torsion Beam Axle) is a general type for rear suspension of small/compact sedans. It connects left and right knuckles using torsion beam axle and trails rear wheels. Therefore, a CTBA performs a main role of ride & handing. But, a CTBA suspension has main bending mode around 120Hz and causes road booming noise in the interior of a car. Therefore, the mode control of a CTBA is very important for reducing road noise. In this paper, we optimized the shape of a CTBA to reduce road noise considering R&H performance, simultaneously. The vibration mechanism of CTBA was investigated using ODS(Operational Deflection Shape) and mode shape.

  • Three dimensional coupled bending-torsion dynamic vibrations of thin-walled open section beam subjected to moving vehicle are investigated by transfer matrix method. Through adopting the idea of Newmark-${\beta}$ method, the partial differential equations of structural vibration can be transformed to the differential equations. Then, those differential equations are solved by transfer matrix method. An iterative scheme is proposed to deal with the coupled bending-torsion terms in the governing vibration equations. The accuracy of the presented method is verified through two numerical examples. Finally, with different eccentricities of vehicle, the torsional vibration of thin-walled open section beam and vertical and rolling vibration of truck body are investigated. It can be concluded from the numerical results that the torsional vibration of beam and rolling vibration of vehicle increase with the eccentricity of vehicle. Moreover, it can be observed that the torsional vibration of thin-walled open section beam may have a significant nonlinear influence on vertical vibration of truck body.

  • Multispan suspension bridges make a good alternative to single-span ones if the crossed strait or river width exceeds 2-3 km. However, multispan three-tower suspension bridges are found to be very sensitive to the wind load due to the lack of effective longitudinal constraint at their central tower. Moreover, at certain critical wind speed values, the aerostatic instability with sharply deteriorating dynamic characteristics may occur with catastrophic consequences. An attempt of an in-depth study on the aerostatic stability mode and damage mechanism of three-tower suspension bridges is made in this paper based on the assessment of strain energy and dynamic characteristics of three particular three-tower suspension bridges in China under different wind speeds and their further integration into the aerostatic stability analysis. The results obtained on the three bridges under study strongly suggest that their aerostatic instability mode is controlled by the coupled action of the anti-symmetric torsion and vertical bending of the two main-spans' deck, together with the longitudinal bending of the towers, which can be regarded as the first-order torsion vibration mode coupled with the first-order vertical bending vibration mode. The growth rates of the torsional and vertical bending strain energy of the deck after the aerostatic instability are higher than those of the lateral bending. The bending and torsion frequencies decrease rapidly when the wind speed approaches the critical value, while the frequencies of the anti-symmetric vibration modes drop more sharply than those of the symmetric ones. The obtained dependences between the critical wind speed, strain energy, and dynamic characteristics of the bridge components under the aerostatic instability modes are considered instrumental in strength and integrity calculation of three-tower suspension bridges.

  • Thermally induced vibration response of composite thin walled beams is investigated. The thin-walled beam model incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constituent materials. Thermally induced vibration response characteristics of a composite thin walled beam exhibiting the circumferentially uniform system(CUS) configuration are exploited in connection with the structural bending-torsion coupling resulting from directional properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and from ply stacking sequence. A coupled thermal structure analysis that includes the effects of structural deformations on heating and temperature gradient is investigated.

  • An improved formulation for spatial stability md free vibration of thin-walled curved beams with variable curvature and non-symmetric cross sections are presented based on the displacement field considering the second order terms of finite semitangential rotations. By introducing Vlasov's assumptions, the total potential energy is derived from the principle of linearized virtual work for a continuum. In this formulation, all displacement parameters and the warping function are defined at the centroid axis so that the coupled terms of bending and torsion are added to the elastic strain energy. Also, the potential energy due to initial stress resultants is consistently derived corresponding to the semitangential rotation and moment. The cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions for development of the curved thin-walled beam element having eight degrees of freedom. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this study, . numerical solutions for free vibration of arches are presented and compared with resells of other researchers and solutions analyzed by the ABAQUS's shell element.
