  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted an increasing attention due to their superior mechanical properties and potential application in industries. The strength of CNT has been predicted or calculated through several simulation techniques but actual experiments on stress-strain behavior are rare due to its dimensional limit, nanoscale positioning/manipulation, and instrumental resolution. We have attempted to observe straining responses of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) with different growth methods by performing an in-situ tensile testing in a scanning electron microscope. Linear deformation and fracture behaviors of MWNT were successfully observed and its force-displacement curve was also measured from the bending stiffness and displacement of the force sensor and manipulator. We also obtained different tensile load of carbon nanotube with different growth methods.

  • This paper describes the development of a precision 3-component load cell with plate beams which may be used for measuring forces Fx, Fy and moment Mz simultaneously in industry. The equations to predict the bending strains on the surface of the beams under forces or moment are derived, the attachment location of strain gages of each sensor is determined, and 3-component load cell is carried out. It reveals that the rated strain calculated from the derived equations are good agreement with the results from Finite Element Method analysis.

  • The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with active and passive constrained layer damping has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived fro flexural vibrations of symmetrical,. multi-layer laminated beams. The damping ratio and model damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. The direct negative velocity feedback control is used for the active constrained layer damping. It is shown that the flexible laminated beam is more effective in the vibration control for both active and passive constrained layer damping. and this paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with constrained layer damping.

  • The ability of an electroactive polymer, IPMC (Ionic Polymer Metal Composites,) to produce electric charge under mechanical deformations may be exploited for the development of next generation of energy harvesters. Two different electrode types (gold and platinum) were employed for the experiments. The sample was tested under dynamic conditions, produced through programmed shaking. In order to evaluate the potential of IPMC for dry condition, these samples were treated with ionic liquid. Three modes of mechanical deformations (bending, tension and shear) were analyzed. Experimental results clearly indicate that IPMCs are attractive applicants for energy harvesting, with inherent advantages like flexibility, low cost, negligible maintenance and virtually infinite longevity. Besides, preliminary energy harvesting model of IPMC has been formulated based upon the work of previous investigators (Newbury 2002, Newbury and Leo 2002, Lee, et al. 2005, Konyo, et al. 2004) and the simulation results reciprocate experimental results within acceptable error.

  • Cable systems are a construction of elements carrying only tension and no compression or bending in membrane structure. Tensile membrane structures are most often used as roofs as they can economically and attractively span large distances. But cable systems have weaknesses to vibration by earthquake, wind and vehicle loads. Damage detection of cable systems by using existing safety diagnosis is difficult to detect the characteristic change of overall structural action. If cable snaps are occurred to cable release and tear in tension structures, these are set up a vibration. So, we used piezo-electric materials, and The principle of operation of a piezoelectric sensor is that a physical dimension, transformed into a force, acts on two opposing faces of the sensing element. In this study, the development on test method of cable system is proposed and tested by tensile strength using piezo-electric materials.

  • The geometry PIG provides pipeline operators with continuous measurement of pipe centerline coordinates, bend radius, displacement, and bending strain in a single pass through the pipeline. This study introduces the developed geometry PIG(Pipeline Inspection Gauge) which is used for geometry surveys. This tool is equipped with the several sensor systems. The Inertial Navigation System (INS) comprises angle rate gyros and linear accelerometers. The system measures the precise path of the PIG during its traverse of the pipeline. This system is also used to produce a detailed map of the lire, measure curvature. Odometers measure the PIG´s distance moved along the line and instantaneous speed during the PIG run. Caliper sensors measure pipeline ...

  • An algorithm is proposed for computing dynamic displacements of a bridge using FBG sensors. An existing algorithm for estimating dynamic displacements of a simply supported beam through mode superposition is extended and applied to various types of bridges with bending and torsional modes. The proposed algorithm is examined through field tests on a suspension span steel deck plate box girder bridge. Guidelines are provided for determining the number of modes and the number of strain gages to be used.

  • Intrinsic Fabry-Perot Optical fiber sensors were embedded to tensile side of the 20cm$\times$20cm$\times$150cm cement concrete structures. The sensors were attached to the reinforcing steels and then, the cement concretes were applied. It took 30 days for curing the specimens. After that, the specimens were tested with 4-point bending method by universal testing machine. Strains were measured and recorded by the strain gauges embedded near optical fiber sensors. Output data of fiber sensor showed good linearity to the strain data from the strain gauges up 2000microstrain. The optical fiber sensors showed good response after yielding of structure while embedded metal film strain gauges did not show any response. We also specimens were broken down. In conclusion, the optical fiber sensors can be used as elements of health monitoring systems for cement concrete infra-structures.

  • Electro-Active paper(EAPap) is a new smart material that has a potential to be used in biomimetic actuator and sensor. It is made by cellulose that is abundant material in nature. EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, large displacement, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. Actuating mechanism of EAPap is known to be the combined effects of ion migration and piezoelectricity. However, the electromechanical actuation mechanisms are not yet to be established. This paper presents the modeling of the actuation behavior of water infused cellulose samples and their composite dielectric constants calculated by Maxwell-Wagner theory. Electro-mechanical forces were calculated using Maxwell stress tensor method. Bending deflection was evaluated from simple beam model and compared with experimental observation, and which result in good correlation with each other.

  • We demonstrated low-voltage organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with bilayer insulators, high-k polymer and low temperature crosslinkable polymer, on a flexible plastic substrate. Poly (vinylidene fluoridetrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) and poly (2-vinylnaphthalene) are used for high-k polymer gate insulator and low temperature crosslinkable polymer insulators, respectively. The mobility of flexible OTFTs is $0.17cm^2/Vs$ at gate voltages -5 V after bending operation.
