  • This paper describes the development of a rehabilitation robot that can provide wrist bending exercise to a severe stroke patient staying in a bed ward or at home. The developed rehabilitation robot has a three-axis force sensor which detects three directional force Fx, Fy, and Fz. The sensor measures a bending force (Fz) exerted on the wrist and the signal force (Fx and Fy) which can be used for the safety purpose. The robot was designed for severe stroke patients in bed, and the robot program was developed to perform a wrist bending rehabilitation exercise. In our tests including a nine-day experimental exercise, the developed force sensor-based robot operated effectively and safely.

  • Most serious stroke patients have the paralysis of their wrists, and can't use of their hands freely. But their wrists can be recovered by rehabilitation exercise. Recently, professional rehabilitation therapeutists exercise the wrists of stroke patients in hospital. But the wrists of stroke patients have not rehabilitated, because the therapeutists are much less than stroke patients in number. Therefore, the wrist bending-exercise rehabilitation robot that can measure the bending force of the patients' wrists is developed. In this paper, the three-axis force sensor was designed for the wrist bending-exercise rehabilitation robot. As a test results, the interference error of the three-axis force sensor was less than 0.85%. It is thought that the sensor can be used to measure the wrist bending force of the patient.

  • This paper deals with the shape fixability of press formed parts through the use of a V-bending process and a U-bending one. The influence of material properties on the shape fixability in forming processes was investigated. A V-bending process had on optimum ben radius for each combination of parameters which caused maximum shape fixability. In the U-bending process the blank holder force could control the degree of shape fixability. A ha호 blank holding force resulted in a uniform strain distribution and increased shape fixability.

  • Using the Mindlin-Reissner plate theory, many quadrilateral plate bending elements have been developed so far to analyze thin and moderately thick plate problems via displacement based finite element method. Here new formulation has been made to analyze thin and moderately thick plate problems using force based finite element method called Integrated Force Method (IFM). The IFM is a novel matrix formulation developed in recent years for analyzing civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering structures. In this method all independent/internal forces are treated as unknown variables which are calculated by simultaneously imposing equations of equilibrium and compatibility conditions. In this paper the force based new bilinear quadrilateral plate bending element (MQP4) is proposed to analyze the thin and moderately thick plate bending problems using Integrated Force Method. The Mindlin-Reissner plate theory has been used in the formulation of this element which accounts the effect of shear deformation. Standard plate bending benchmark problems are analyzed using the proposed element MQP4 via Integrated Force Method to study its performance with respect to accuracy and convergence, and results are compared with those of displacement based 4-node quadrilateral plate bending finite elements available in the literature. The results are also compared with the exact solutions. The proposed element MQP4 is free from shear locking and works satisfactorily in both thin and moderately thick plate bending situations.

  • The bending test of an individual ZnO nanorod was performed with a nano-manipulator and a force sensor inside the scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the bending properties of ZnO nanorod were also discussed. The ZnO nanorod used in this experiment was fabricated by means of solution base process. The force sensor used for bending test of ZnO nanorod was typed with cantilever. The force sensor was mounted on the nano-manipulator. The nano-manipulator was controlled and manipulated by a personal computer. The each end of an individual ZnO nanorod was attached on the rigid support and the tip of the force sensor with an electron beam exposure, and then the bending test was carried out by controlling of the nano-manipulator. The bending modulus of a ZnO nanorod was calculated at 69.35GPa after the bending test.

  • This paper is a study on the deformation behavior of the reinforced concrete circular section column carrying bi-axial bending moment and axial force. That is, this is to clarify the deformation behavior of the reinforced concrete circular section column carrying bi-axial bending moment and axial force by analytic methods. The deformation behavior of circular section column under bi-axial uni-axial bending moment and axial force are compare with those of a square section column under the same conditions. Those of circular section column under bi-axial bending moment are decreased as compared with those of circular section column under uni-axial bending moment. The results mentioned above are the same under the axial force of 7tons and 11tons.

  • High bending collapse performance (maximum resistance force and mean resistance force) of body center pillar is an important design target for vehicle safety against side impact. In this study, effect of the upper section shape and the thickness of outer reinforcement on bending collapse performance was investigated for the center pillar of a large passenger car. First, through bending collapse analyses using simple models with uniform section, an optimized center pillar upper section was chosen. Next, bending collapse performance for various models of the actual center pillar with changing the thickness of outer reinforcement were analyzed. The finally designed model showed distinctive enhancement in bending collapse performance nearly without weight increase.

  • A numerical study using nonlinear finite element analysis is performed to investigate the behavior of isolated reinforced concrete walls subjected to combined axial force and in-plane and out-of-plane bending moments. For a nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities was developed. Through numerical studies, the internal force distribution in the cross-section is idealized, and then a new design method, different from the existing methods based on the plane section hypothesis was developed. According to the proposed method, variations in the interaction curve of the in-plane bending moment and axial force depends on the range of the permissible axial force per unit length, that is determined by a given amount of out-of-plane bending moment. As the out-of-plane bending moment increases, the interaction curve shrinks, indicating a decrease in the ultimate strength. The proposed method is then compared with an existing method, using the plane section hypothesis. Compared with the proposed method, the existing method overestimates the ultimate strength for the walls subjected to low out-of-plane bending moments, while it underestimates the ultimate strength for walls subject to high out-of-plane bending moments. The proposed method can address the out-of-plane local behavior of the individual wall segments that may govern the ultimate strength of the entire wall.

  • The gripper with a soft pneumatic actuator uses a soft material, unlike the gripper that uses a rigid body, so it is safer and lighter to interact with objects without advanced control technology. Among the soft pneumatic actuators that have been studied, PneuNets actuators have bellows shape, which enable quick operation and complete bending with only small material deformation at low pressure. In this study, we suggested improved form of PneuNets actuators to obtain the performance of the soft actuator that a larger bending angle and larger bending force at a small pressure. An experiment was designed and conducted to measure the bending angle and bending force according to the pressure. As a result, it was confirmed through experiments that the improved model has a maximum bending angle at a pressure of 5 kPa lower than that of the previous model, and a maximum bending force of 1.97 times at the same pressure.

  • Composite beams with web openings are vulnerable to Vierendeel bending failure. The available methods provide quite conservative estimates of Vierendeel bending resistance. An alternative design method to compute the resistance was proposed in this study, based on quadratic nonlinear interactions of normalized shear force, axial force and Vierendeel bending moment. The interactions of the top and bottom Tee section must satisfy mutual conditions to prevent the Vierendeel failure. The normalized shear force and Vierendeel bending moment of the composite part were used instead in the top Tee interaction. The top Tee axial force was computed based on force equilibrium. Based on a rigid-plastic model, the composite resistance is estimated using an effective slab width of the vertical shear resistance. On using the proposed method, nonlinear reductions due to shear loads and axial forces are not required, in contrast to prior methods. The proposed method was validated against experiments from literature. The method limitations and accuracy as well as the Vierendeel behavior were investigated by finite element simulations, with varied composite beam parameters. The proposed design loads are less conservative than earlier estimates and deviate less from the simulations.
