Study on the Improvement of the Image Analysis Speed in the Digital Image Correlation Measurement System for the 3-Point Bend Test

  • Machine material and structural strain are critical factors for appraising mechanical properties and safety. Particularly in three and four-point bending tests, which appraise the deflection and flexural strain of an object due to external force, measurements are made by the crosshead movement or deflection meter of a universal testing machine. The Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method is one of the non-contact measurement methods. It uses the image analyzing method that compares the reference image with the deformed image for measuring the displacement and strain of the objects caused by external force. Accordingly, the advantage of this method is that the object's surface roughness, shape, and temperature have little influence. However, its disadvantage is that it requires extensive time to compare the reference image with the deformed image for measuring the displacement and strain. In this study, an algorithm is developed for DIC that can improve the speed of image analysis for measuring the deflection and strain of an object caused by a three-point bending load. To implement this algorithm for improving the speed of image analysis, LabVIEW 2010 was used. Furthermore, to evaluate the accuracy of the developed fast correlation algorithm, the deflection of an aluminum specimen under a three-point bending load was measured by using the universal test machine and DIC measurement system.

The Day of the Week Effect in Chinese Stock Market

  • This study investigates daily stock market anomalies in Chinese stock market, using nine most representative stock indices over an eleven year time period spanning from pre-financial crisis era to six years into the financial crisis. This research is the first to test the presence of the day of the week effect on stock returns in the Chinese stock exchanges during the financial crisis. We find that the day of week effects have been strongly significant in Chinese stock exchanges since 2004. However, unlike the previously found negative Monday effect and positive Friday effect in the U.S., Chinese stock market shows positive returns on Mondays and negative returns on Tuesdays. More importantly, the negative Tuesday effect is only significant after the inception of financial crisis. The results indicate a positive effect on Mondays and a negative effect on Thursdays. More importantly, we find a negative Tuesday effect during the financial crisis, which suggests a spillover of the Monday effect from the U.S. stock market. Our results shed some light on the degree of market efficiency in the largest emerging capital market in the world, and its increasingly close relationship with the U.S. capital market.

Measurement of Outward Turbulent Flows Subject to Plane Rate of Strain in a Rotating 90 Deg. Curved Duct of Variable Cross-Section (단순변형률 조건 하의 회전하는 가변단면 $90^{\circ}$ 곡덕트내 외향 난류유동 측정)

  • Hot-wire measurements were carried out on the developing turbulent flows subject to plane rate of strain in a rotating curved duct. The cross-section of the curved duct varies from 100mm${\times}$50mm rectangular shape at the bend inlet gradually to the 50mm${\times}$100mm rectangular shape at the bend outlet. Experimental setup consists of the test section of $90^{\circ}$ curved duct, rotating disc of 1.95m diameter, Ag-Ni precision slip ring, automatic traversing mechanism, variable speed motor, centrifugal blower, orifice flowmeter and hot-wire anemometer. Data signals from the rotating curved duct are transmitted through the slip ring to the computer which is located at the outside of the rotating disc. 3-dimensional velocity and 6 Reynold stresses components were obtained from the fluctuating and mean voltage measured by the slant type hot-wire probe rotating into 6 orientations. We investigate the effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces on the turbulence structure.

  • Bend test for metallic materials was conducted on samples of galvanized steel pipes being used in greenhouse farms. A secular change of yield strength for galvanized steel pipes was analyzed with the part of buried in the ground and exposed in the atmosphere. From those experimental results and corrosion rate of galvanized film, the standard durable years for pipe framed greenhouses are estimated that the small sized pipe houses of movable type is 7∼8 years and the large sized pipe houses of fixed type is 14∼15 years.

Tensile Properties and Adhesion of Hybrid-Type Anti-Corrosion Polymer Cement Slurry (하이브리드형 방식 폴리머 시멘트 슬러리의 인장특성 및 접착성)

  • In recent years, epoxy-coated reinforcing bars have been widely used in order to prevent the corrosion of ordinary reinforcing bar. However, they have a bad balance between performance and cost. Especially, they have a brittleness properties, low bond strength to cement concrete and no good bend-ability in the field. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the tensile properties and adhesion of hybrid-type anti-corrosion polymer cement slurry (PCS). PCSs are prepared with four types polymer dispersions using fly ash and silica fume, and tested for proper coating thickness, tensile properties, adhesion to steel plate and bend-ability. From the test results, the viscosity of PCS is effected by polymer dispersion types, and is a little decreased by using fly ash. The coating thickness of PCS has a proper thickness at polymer-binder ratio of 100%. It is apparent that the coating thickness has various values according to viscosity of PCS, water-binder ratio and polymer-binder rato. PCS has a good various anticorrosion properties and physical properties such as tensile strength, adhesion and bend-ability. It is also recommended that proper coating thickness to reinforcing bar is in the ranges of 150 to $250{\mu}m$ for bond strength, adhesion and bend-ability. It is also expected that the coated reinforcing bar using PCS is widely used instead of epoxy coated reinforcing bar in the industrial field.

  • For the aluminum material of the thick-thickness more than 100mm Penetration depth Electron beam welding is effectively applicable with a characteristic of high energy intensity. But Al 6061 alloy has high crack sensitivity due to minor alloys, which are silicon, magnesium, copper etc. With a sample block of 135mm thickness EBW test was performed in vertical position. As tensile strength has $210{\sim}220N/mm^2$ with weld area broken. Bend test shows low ductility with fracture of partly specimens. Chemical contents of alloys show no difference between weld and base metal. Defect in middle weld area figures out typical hot crack due to low melting materials. Micro structure of weld area has some difference compare to HAZ and base metal. As a result of EBW test for Al 6061 alloy, it shows that weld defect could be occurred even though establishing of optimum weld parameter condition.

Considering the vertical, compressive, twisting load and 3-point supporting, Bend natural frequency Measurement, Twist natural frequency Measurement type as a testing terms, the structural stability of a car body was evaluated.

A Study on the Leg of Mutton Sleeve Pattern Design of the Ladies' Costume of the 1890's (1890년대 여성복의 Leg of Mutton Sleeve 패턴 설계에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to reproduce the Leg of Mutton Sleeve pattern of the ladies' costume of the 1890's for Korean women of the twenties who have the standard body type and the average size. Nineteen Leg of Mutton Sleeve patterns of the ladies' costume of the 1890's were collected and drawn to actual size. Nineteen Leg of Mutton Sleeve patterns of the ladies' costume of the 1890's were classified into three groups(S1~S3) by the pattern pieces and the bend of the lower part of the elbow line. The S1 was one-piece sleeve pattern and the lower part of the elbow line of S1 was not bent. The gathers volume of sleeve cap of S1 was smaller than S2 and S3. The S2 was one-piece sleeve pattern and the lower part of the elbow line of S2 was bent. The S2 pattern had typical characteristics of the Leg of Mutton Sleeve that the gathers volume of sleeve cap was large and the lower part of elbow line was tight. The S3 was two-piece sleeve pattern and the lower part of the elbow line of S3 was bent. The gathers volume of sleeve cap of S3 was similar with S2. The study patterns of three groups of the Leg of Mutton Sleeve which had the characteristics and the silhouette of the Leg of Mutton Sleeve pattern of the ladies' costume of the 1890's were designed like for Korean women of the twenties who have the standard body type and the average size through modifications based on the evaluation of dressing on two occasions. The study pattern of three groups of the Leg of Mutton Sleeve were evaluated to have the silhouette of the Leg of Mutton Sleeve of the 1890's and to fit Korean women of the twenties who have the standard body type and the average size with the sensory test.

A Study for the Weldability and Welded Joint Performance on the SAW of HSA800 Steel (HSA800 강재의 SAW 용접성 및 이음성능 연구)

  • In this research, 9 SAW welding specimens with 1 hour post-heat treatment (PH1) and 2 hours (PH2) were experimented to confirm the weldability and the joint performance of 60mm thickness HSA800 steel. SAW tests with PH1 & PH2, including weld impact test, bend test, hardness test, macroscopic test, and microscopic test, had a good test results. However, from the chemical composition test results, P composition was not satisfied with Korean Industrial Standards(KS). According to the weld-zone tensile tests, 2 hours post-heat SAW is recommended because the mechanical characteristics of SAW PH2 were better than those of SAW PH1.
