  • By using an ANSYS product suite (CFX, Ansys Multiphysics), which is a powerful tool for multiphysics analysis of complicated physical phenomena, we performed a structural stress analysis based on fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena within a quick connect/disconnect (QC/DC) bellows system. Considering the extremely low temperatures in the QC/DC environment, an approach to the problem based on complex multi-physics phenomena, where different phenomena interact with each other, is crucial. Therefore, we use a numerical analysis technique where fluid-thermal-structural interactions are combined. In conclusion, when low temperature fluids flow inside bellows, the expected service life is conspicuously reduced due to the thermal stress caused by heat transfer. Therefore, in future research, a structure with considerably reduced thermal stress by robust design optimization will be derived.

  • We present a piezoelectric actuator using stiffness control and stroke amplification mechanism in order to make large lateral displacement. In this work, we suggest stiffness control approach that generates lateral displacement by increasing the vertical stiffness and reducing the lateral stiffness using additional structure. In addition, an additional structure of a serpentine spring amplifies the lateral displacement like leverage structure. The suggested lateral PZT actuator (bellows actuator) consists of serpentine spring and PZT/electrode layer which is located at the edge of the serpentine spring. The edge of the serpentine spring prevents the vertical motion of PZT layer, while the other edge of the serpentine spring makes stroke amplification like leverage structure. We have determined dimensions of the bellows actuator using ANSYS simulation. Length, width and thickness of PZT layer are 135$\mu$m, 20$\mu$m and 0.4$\mu$m, respectively. Dimensions of the silicon serpentine spring are thickness of 25$\mu$m, length of 300$\mu$m, and width of 5$\mu$m. The bellows actuator has been fabricated by SOI wafer with 25$\mu$m-top silicon and 1$\mu$m-buried oxide layer. The bellows actuator shows the maximum 3.93$\pm$0.2$\mu$m lateral displacement at 16V with 1Hz sinusoidal voltage input. In the frequency response test, the fabricated bellows actuator showed consistent displacement from 1Hz to 1kHz at 10V. From experimental study, we found the bellows actuator using thin film PZT and silicon serpentine spring generated mainly laterally displacement not vertical displacement at 16V, and serpentine spring played role of stroke amplification.

  • Gangway bellows in this study is the double wrinkled neoprene rubber component to accept various deviations between the carriage end parts of the articulated type high speed railway vehicle(HSRV). The fatigue failure of the bellows has a harmful effect on the riding comfort for the passengers with the increase of noise and ringing in the ears due to air-tightness failure during pass through a long tunnel. In this study, to assure the safety of gangway bellows of the HSRV, non-linear analysis of the gangway bellows considering triaxial angular displacement(rolling /yawing/pitching) between the carriage end parts are performed. The non-linear properties of the rubber are determined by uniaxial tension and equi-biaxial tension test. Moreover, from the results of non-linear analysis, the effects of the angular displacements and frictional coefficients are evaluated.

  • The mechanical properties of bellows, such as the extensibility and the strength can be changed depending on the shape. For the shipbuilding material, it is desirable that the fatigue life is long due to the elastic property and the reduction of thermal stress in piping system. Nowadays, the domestic production and design of bellows are based on the E.J.M.A. Code. Therefore, the design standard is in need because of much errors and lack of detailed analysis. In this study, it is attempted to find out the optimal shape of U-type bellows using the finite element analysis. The design factors, mountain height, length, thickness, and the number of convolutions are considered and the proper values are chosen for the simulation. The results shaw that as the number of convolutions reduces, the volume decreases while the stress increases. However, as the number of convolutions increases, the volume increases above the standard volume and the stress obviously increases. In addition, the effect of the thickness of bellows on the stress is very large. Both of the mass and stress are decreasing at a certain lower value region. Also, we investigated shape optimization with considering maximum stress distribution tendency.

  • The exhaust system is one of the major sources of vibrations, along with the suspension system and engine. When the exhaust system is connected directly to the engine, it transfers vibrations to the vehicle body through the body mounts. Therefore, in order to reduce the vibrations transmitted from the exhaust system, the vibration characteristics of the exhaust system should be predicted. Thus, the dynamic characteristics of the bellows, which form a key component of the exhaust system, must be modeled accurately. However, it is difficult to model the bellows because of the complicated geometry. Though the equivalent beam modeling technique has been applied in the design stage, it is not sufficiently accurate in the case of the bellows which have complicated geometries. In this paper, we present an improved technique for modeling the bellows in a vehicle. The accuracy of the modeling method is verified by comparison with the experimental results.

  • The application of seismic separation joints that can improve the deformation capacity of piping is an effective way to improve seismic performance. Seismic separation joints capable of axial expansion and bending deformation are installed where deformation is expected and used for the purpose of safely protecting the piping. Bellows are flexible and have low stiffness, so they can be used as seismic separation joints because they have excellent ability to respond to relatively large deformation. In this study, the seismic performance and limit state for bending deformation of 2-ply and 3-ply bellows specimens were evaluated. Seismic performance was evaluated by applying an increasing cyclic load to consider low-cycle fatigue due to seismic load. In order to confirm the margin for the limit state of the evaluated seismic performance, an experiment was conducted in which a cyclic loading of constant amplitude was applied. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the bellows specimen was made of stainless steel and had a high elongation, so that the 2-ply bellows specimen had the limit performance of resisting within 3 cycles even at the maximum forced displacement of the 3-ply bellows specimen.

  • The stress analyses of the 'U'-shaped multi-ply reinforced gimbal bellows under high pressure and rotational displacement loadings are performed at the room and cryogenic temperatures. The bellows are used for the Lox pipe line which connects the combustion chamber with the turbopump of a liquid rocket engine. The distributions of the stress, the strains and the contact pressures are obtained from the finite element analysis considering the geometric non-linearities of the contacts between the plies and the material one of the isotropic plasticity. Those are compared with the stress results from EJMA (Expansion Joint Manufacturing Association) standard. Also, the effects of the operating temperature and the reinforcing ring on the stresses are investigated.
