This study investigated factors that contribute to the clothing behavior and body image of elderly men, how these factors vary by demographic characteristics, and how these factors affect quality of life. The subjects were 250 elderly men selected by convenience sampling between the ages of 60 to 80 who lived in Gyeongnam province. They participated in a survey from May-June 2012. Out of the 250 participants only 227 were used to analyze the data due to the completeness of their survey. The results showed that the factors for clothing behavior were social psychological importance, conformity, economic efficiency, fashion interest, and interpersonal intention. For body image, the factors revealed were physical attractiveness, interest in appearance, and concern about weight. Differences in the clothing behavior, body image, and quality of life were indicated by the demographic characteristics of the subjects. Clothing behavior and body image of elderly men were revealed as a contributing factor towards quality of life.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing dementia preventive behavior intention of the elderly people based on the Health Belief Model. Methods: The participants included 113 elderly people who met the eligibility criteria. Demographic variables, variables of the Health Belief Model (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefit, perceived barrier, cues to action, general health motivation, and self efficacy), dementia fear and behavioral intention of dementia prevention were examined using structured self-report questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed by stepwise multiple regression using SPSS for Windows version 21. Results: Self efficacy, alcohol drinking, perceived barrier and education level were significant factors, which explained 32% of the variance in dementia preventive behavior intention. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that a powerful predictor of dementia preventive behavior intention of the elderly was self efficacy. Conclusion: Developing nursing intervention to enhance self efficacy toward improvement of dementia preventive behavior among elderly people would be recommended.
Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the influence of health literacy and health empowerment on health behavior practice in elderly patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: 239 elderly outpatients older than 65 years of age were included. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics including independent t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical regression. Results: Major factors having a significant impact on health behavior practice were health literacy (${\beta}=.26$, p<.001) and health empowerment (${\beta}=.32$, p<.001). Health literacy was increased by 4.7% after controlling for general and health-related characteristics. Health empowerment increased by 5.9% after controlling for general and health-related characteristics, and health literacy. The two variables explained 35% of the variance in health behavior practice (F=7.74, p<.001). Conclusion: The main findings of this study can be utilized as the foundation for developing programs to promote health empowerment and health behavior practice of the elderly population. Furthermore, the results of the study can also be used to establish health-related strategies.
Purpose: To compare the health promoting behavior in rural elderly people by complementary alternative medicine(CAM) utilization. Methods: The data were collected from March 06th to May 26th, 2006. The participants were 207 rural elderly persons in Korea. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed with the SAS win 8.0 program. Results: The rate of using CAM was 60.9%. Non-religious, perceived poor health and high concerns about health group used it more. The most common type was oriental medicine(35.7%), the most common motive was body protection(21.2%) and major source of information was other patients(35.9%). Almost all the subjects(90%) were satisfied with using CAM. The average score for the health promoting behavior was $2.67{\pm}.32$(range 1.65-3.71). The average scores for each subscale were, personal communication 2.98, self-actualization 2.79, nutrition 2.78, health responsibility 2.58, exercise 2.40, stress management 2.38. Significant differences in health promoting behavior were found according to CAM utilization: personal communication, self actualization. Conclusion: There were differences health promoting behavior between the elderly CAM utilization: Systemic guidelines of CAM use are needed.
With the overall revision of the Welfare of the Aged Act in 1997, elderly welfare facilities have developed differently according to the size of locality, capacity, and social and economic characteristics. In response to the problem, various plans are being executed for expanding services and facilities for the aged. However, such efforts by the government have been focused on quantitative increase rather than on qualitative improvement, and there are not many high-quality elderly welfare facilities that meet the needs of the consumers, namely, the aged. In contrast, elderly welfare centers in Japan began to be founded from the 1960s and increased significantly from the 1970s and, as a result, 2,214 elderly welfare centers were in operation in 1995, maintaining a high level in quantity as well as in quality. Therefore, the present study surveyed using a checklist how elderly welfare centers in Japan, which are playing central roles in welfare facility services for the aged in Japan, design their indoor spaces reflecting elders' behavior and characteristics and, based on the results of the survey, classified spaces into shared spaces and individual service spaces and analyzed the spaces of each center using the checklist. The results from this case study will be used as basic data to establish standards for the space composition of elderly welfare facilities in Korea, which has 10 years' short history of elderly welfare facilities.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an elderly care volunteer program for nursing students and to evaluate its effects. Method: An elderly care volunteer program was developed and then used with 77 nursing students for 6 months. Before and after the program, students responded with a questionnaire on knowledge, attitude and behavior toward the elderly. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test, t-test, and Repeated measure ANOVA. Result: The elderly care volunteer program significantly improved knowledge toward elderly between the experimental and control groups but not in attitude and behavior toward elderly. Conclusion: This study shows that the elderly care volunteer program was an effective service-learning program to improve knowledge toward elderly for nursing students.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the relationships among life satisfaction, activities of daily living, depression and health behavior in low income elderly living at home. Methods: Study participants were 455 elderly who were receiving home visit services from the Daegu Regional Office of Patriots and Veteran Affairs. Data were collected through personal interviews using questionnaires from July to August, 2010. Results: Average scores of ADL and IADL were 7.82 out of 21 and 12.67 out of 33 respectively, which indicate relatively independent to everyday life. Mean scores of depression, health behavior and life satisfaction were 8.61 out of 15, 88.14 out of 132 and 48.57 out of 60. There were significant relationships among the variables of life satisfaction, activities of daily living (ADL, IADL), depression and health behavior. A significant factor influencing life satisfaction was health behavior ($\beta$=.134, p=.020). Conclusion: The findings of this study would be a useful information for constructing an intervention program to care for elderly.
Purpose: This study was to examine the relation of nurses' job stress and knowledge, attitude and care behavior for elderly patient in hospitals. Method: One hundred ninety one nurses caring the elderly patients in hospitals in Ilsan, Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do were subjects. The data was collected between Sept. 21 and 31, 2009. Data was analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation with SPSS/Win 17.0 and the fitness of pathway models with AMOS 5.0. Results: The mean scores of job stress and knowledge were in middle range, and attitude and care behavior were in a little higher range. The fitness of hypothetical model was excellent. Job stress had direct effects on attitude and care behavior, knowledge had direct effect on attitude and attitude had direct effect on care behavior. But the pathways related to job stress and attitude and job stress and care behavior were not significant. In modified model deleted the pathway between job stress and attitude, the pathway related to job stress and behavior also was not significant. Conclusion: Education related to the elderly for nurses to improve care behavior is needed continuously.
