  • TiN and TiAlN coating layer were deposited on WC-Co steel substrates by an arc ion plating(AIP) technique. The crystallinity and morphology for the deposited coating layers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The impact behaviors of the deposited TiN and TiAlN coating layer were investigated with a ball-on-plate impact tester. Beyond $10^2$ impact cycle, TiAlN coating layer showed superior impact wear resistance compared to TiN coating layer. On the other hand, both TiN and TiAlN coating layers started to be partially failed between $10^2$ and $10^3$ impact cycle. Above $10^3$ impact cycle, TiN and TiAlN coating layers showed similar impact behavior because of the substrate effect.

  • The effect of the amount of $SiO_2$dopant on the behavior of $AlO_2$$O_3$-composite formation by melt oxdation of Al-alloy was examined in this paper. The $SiO_2$powder was spread on the top surface of the Al-1Mg-3-Si-5Zn-1Cu alloy in th alumina crucible. The selected amount of each powder was 0.03, 0.10, 0.16g/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The oxidation behavior was determined by observing the weight gain after the heat treatment for 10 hours at 1373K. The macroscopic structure of formed oxide layer was examined by an optical microscope. The top surface and the cross-section of the grown oxide layer were investigated by SEM and analysed by EDX. The $SiO_2$ powder was determined to enhance oxidation by thermit reaction with Al which reduced the growth incubation period of the oxidation layer. As the amount of the $SiO_2$dopant increased, the growth rate decreased due to the precipitated Si which blocked the Al-alloy channel in the composite materials. However, more uniform layer was obtained due to the occurrance of the enhanced oxidation reaction in the whole alloy surface compared to the case of addition of less amount of dopant.

  • Hypereutectic Al-25Si-X alloys, expected to be applied to the cylinder-liner-part of the engine-block of an automobile due to the excellent wear resistance, low density and low thermal expansion coefficient has been fabricated through a spray forming process. The obtained microstructure of the hypereutectic Al-25Si-X alloy appeared to consist of Al matrix and equiaxed Si particles of average diameter of $5-7{\mu}m$. To characterize the deformation behavior of this alloy, a series of load relaxation and compression tests have been conducted at temperatures ranging from RT to $500^{\circ}C$. The strain rate sensitivity parameter (m) of this alloy has been found to be very low (0.1) below foot and reached 0.2 at $500^{\circ}C$. During the deformation above 300'c in compression, strain softening has been observed. The diagram of extrusion pressure vs. ram-speed has been constructed, providing the extrusion condition of Al-25Si-X alloys.

  • The stress-strain relation of aluminum (Al) alloy foam cell wall was evaluated by the instrumented sharp indentation method. The indentation in a few micron ranges was performed on the cell wall of Al-alloy foam having a composition or Al-3wt.%Si-2wt.%Cu-2wt.%Mg as well as its precursor (material prior to foaming). To extract the stress-stram relation in terms of yield stress ${\sigma}_y$, strain hardening exponent n and elastic modulus E, the closed-form dimensionless relationships between load-indentation depth curve and elasto-plastic property were used. The tensile properties of precursor material of Al-alloy foam were also measured independently by uni-axial tensile test. In order to verify the validity of the extracted stress-strain relation, it was compared with the results of tensile test and finite element (FE) analysis. A modified cubic-spherical lattice model was proposed to analyze the compressive behavior of the Al-alloy foam. The material parameters extracted by the instrumented nanoindentation method allowed the model to predict the compressive behavior of the Al-alloy foam accurately.

  • Electrical behavior of AlN ceramics sintered with $Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid has been investigated with respect to additional $TiO_2$ dopant. From the impedance spectroscopy, it was found that the grain and grain boundary conductivities have greatly decreased with addition of $TiO_2$ dopant. The $TiO_2$ dopant also increased the activation energy of the grain conductivity by about 0.37 eV; this increase was attributed to the formation of an associate between Al vacancies and Ti ions at the Al sites. Similarly, the electronic conductivity was reduced by $TiO_2$ addition. However, $TiO_2$ solubility in AlN grains was below the detection limit of typical EDX analysis. Grain boundary was clean, without liquid films, but did show yttrium segregation. The transference number of ions was close to 1, showing that AlN is a predominantly ionic conductor. Based on the observed results, the implications of using AlN applications as insulators have been discussed.

  • In this work, the effect of applied load on the wear behavior of Al/SiC composites was studied. Al/SiC composites were fabricated following the thermal spray process. Dry sliding wear tests were performed on these composites under four different applied loads, i.e., 5, 10, 15, and 20 N. The wear behaviors of the composites under these applied loads were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Under applied loads of up to 15 N, the wear rates of Al/SiC composites decreased with an increase in the applied load because of the formation of an adhesion layer on the worn surface. However in the case of an applied load of 20 N, the wear rate was significantly high because the formation and fracture of the adhesion layer were repeated continuously. These results show that the wear behaviors of the tested composites are significantly influenced owing to the applied loads.

  • The Manchester Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) is the most commonly used frameworks for investigating the relationship between self-reported driving behavior and accident involvement. After Reason et al. introduced DBQ, there were many studies replicating the research of Reason et al. in many countries. There was, however, no study replication of the Reason's research in Korea. The aim of this study is to replicate the distinction among errors, lapses and violations, and to evaluate the relationship of these behaviors with road traffic accidents on Korean drivers. 223 Korean drivers completed the Korean version of original DBQ with questions regarding background information, such as age, gender, annual mileage and accident involvement. Participants answered self-assessment questions, also. Factor analysis revealed three factors like Reason et al. The three factors were dangerous errors, violations and relatively harmless errors.

  • The deformation behavior of a $Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_5Cu_{30}$ bulk metallic glass under tensile loading at different range of strain rates and temperatures between 680 K and 740 K were investigated. The variation in the deformation behavior of $Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_5Cu_{30}$ bulk metallic glass which resulted from the crystallization induced during testing was reported. The$Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_5Cu_{30}$ bulk metallic glass has showed either homogeneous or inhomogeneous deformation depending on test condition. It exhibited a maximum elongation of about 560 % at the condition of $407^{\circ}C{\times}\;10^{-4}/s$. The flow behavior exhibited three different types and the flow stress became lower at higher temperatures and lower strain rates. The increase of the time elapsed during heating resulted in the partial crystallization of bulk metallic glass phase and eventually strain hardening and brittle fracture.

  • Effects of Al and Cr alloying elements on the corrosion behavior of Fe-Al-Cr alloy system was investigated using potentiodynamic and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests(CPPT) in the $H_2SO_4$ and HCI solutions. The corrosion morphologies in Fe-Al-Cr alloy were analysed by utilizing scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and EDX. It was found that the corrosion potential of Fe-20Cr-20Al was highest whereas the critical anodic current density and passive current density were lower than that of the other alloys in 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ solution. The second anodic peak at 1000 mV disappeared in the case of alloys containing high Al and low Cr contents. Pitting potential increased with increasing Cr content and repassivation potential decreased with decreasing Al content in 0.1 M HCI solution. Fe-Al-Cr alloy containing high Al and Cr contents showed remarkably improved pitting resistance against $Cl^-$ attack from pit morphologies.
