  • Objectives: REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) has received little attention in epidemiologic studies. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of probable REM sleep behavior disorder (pRBD) in the elderly population and its clinical features. Methods: A random sample of 1,588 was selected from a roster of 14,050 elderly population living in Osan city. The subjects were asked to fill out the REM sleep behavior disorder screening questionnaire (RBDSQ). Subjects whose score were 5 or higher on RBDSQ underwent a diagnostic phase of person-to-person assessment by experts in RBD. Results: Among 1,588 subjects, 886 elderly subjects participated in the screening phase and 123 subjects were assessed in the diagnostic phase. Eleven subjects were diagnosed as having pRBD, so prevalence was 1.5% (95% CI=0.70-2.30%). The frequency of depression and cognitive decline was significantly increased in patients with pRBD compared to subjects without pRBD, and there was no difference in sleep disturbances between two groups. Conclusions: Probable REM sleep behavior disorder is not rare in the elderly but frequently under-recognized. More attention should be paid to evaluation and treatment of RBD.

  • In this study, we documented the midlatitude F2-layer response to five strong geomagnetic storms with minimum Dst < -150 nT that occurred in solar minimum years using hourly values of the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2) from four ionosondes located in different hemispheres. The results were very limited, but they illustrated some peculiarities in the behavior of the F2-layer storm. During equinox, the characteristic ionospheric disturbance patterns over the Japanese station Wakkanai in the Northern Hemisphere and the Australian station Mundaring in the Southern Hemisphere were consistent with the well-known scenario by $Pr{\ddot{o}}lss$ (1993); however, during a December solstice magnetic storm, both stations did not observe any noticeable positive ionospheric disturbances. Over the "near-pole" European ionosonde, clear positive ionospheric storms were not observed during the events, but the "far-from-pole" Southern Hemisphere station Port Stanley showed prominent enhancements in F2-layer peak electron density in all magnetic storms except one. No event produced noticeable nighttime enhancements in foF2 over all four ionosondes.

  • Experimental study was performed to investigate the flow behavior in boundary layer on the blade suction surface of a multi-stage axial flow compressor, which was focused on the third stage of the 4-stage Low Speed Research Compressor. Flow measurements in the boundary layer were obtained using a boundary layer hot wire probe, which was traversed normal to the blade suction surface at small increments by the probe traverse specially designed. Detailed boundary layer flow measurements covering most of the stator suction surface were taken and are described using time mean and ensemble averaged velocity profiles. Amplitude of the velocity fluctuation and turbulence intensity in the boundary layer flow are also discussed. At midspan, narrow but strong wake zone due to passing wake disturbances is generated in the boundary layer near the blade leading edge for the rotor blade passing period. Corner separation is observed at the tip region near the trailing edge, which causes to increase steeply the boundary layer thickness.

  • Drawing is a mechanical operation attenuating material thickness to an appropriate level for the next processing or end usage. When the input material has a form of bundle or bundles made of very thin and long shaped wires or fibers, this attenuation operation is called 'bundle drawing' or 'drafting'. Bundle drawing is being used widely in manufacturing micro sized wires or staple yarns. However, the bundle processed by this operation has more or less defects in the evenness of linear density. Such irregularities cause many problems not only for the product quality but also for the efficiency of the next successive processes. In this research a mathematical model for the dynamic behavior of the bundle fluid is to be set up on the basis of general physical laws containing physical variables, i.e. linear density and velocity as the dynamic state variables of the bundle fluid. The governing equations resulting from the modeling show that they appear in a slightly different form from what they do in a continuum fluid. Then, the governing equations system is simplified in a steady state and the bundle dynamics is simulated, showing that the shape of the velocity profiles depends on two model parameters. Experiments confirm that the model parameters are to be well adjusted to show a coincidence with the theoretical analysis. The higher the drawing ratio and drawing speed we, the more sensitive becomes the bundle flow to exogenous disturbances.

  • The extinction behavior and the unsteady response of augmented reduced mechanism(ARM) have been investigated by adopting an OPPDIF code and a numerical solver for the flamelet equations. By comparing the performance of the ARM based on Miller and Bowman's mechanism(MB-ARM) with that of the ARM based on GRI-Mech 3.0(GRI-3.0-ARM), it is identified that the MB-ARM is more suitable for the unsteady calculation because it is relatively less stiff than GRI-3.0-ARM during an ignition process. The steady results using the MB-ARM, which is modified to predict reasonably the extinction point of experiment, are in excellent agreement with those from full mechanism. Under the sinusoidal transient disturbances of scalar dissipation rate, the unsteady responses of the flame temperature and species concentrations using a modified MB-ARM show in very close agreement with those from full mechanism. It is presumed that above modified MB-ARM is very suitable for the unsteady simulation of turbulent flames because it gives not only a low computational cost but also a good prediction performance for flame structure, extinction point and unsteady response.

  • This work treat the modeling and simulation of non-linear dynamic behavior of a web winding process during traction. We designate by a winding process any system applying the cycles of unwinding, transport, treatment, and winding to various flat products. This system knows several constraints, such as the thermal effects caused by the frictions, and the mechanical effects provoked by metal elongation, that generates dysfunctions due to the influence of the process conditions. Several controllers are considered, including Proportional-integral (PI) and Backstepping control. This paper presents the study of Backstepping controls strategy of the winding system. Our winding system is simulated in MATLAB SIMULINK environment, the results obtained illustrate the efficiency of the proposed control with no overshoot, and the rising time is improved with good disturbances rejections comparing with the classical control law.

  • The widely used control theory based design of PI family controllers fails to perform satisfactorily under parameter variation, nonlinear or load disturbance. In high performance applications, it is useful to automatically extract the complex relation that represent the drive behaviour. The use of learning through example algorithms can be a powerful tool for automatic modelling variable speed drives. They can automatically extract a functional relationship representative of the drive behavior. These methods present some advantages over the classical ones since they do not rely on the precise knowledge of mathematical models and parameters. The paper proposes high performance speed and current control of synchronous reluctance motor(SynRM) drive using adaptive learning mechanism-fuzzy neural network (ALM-FNN) and fuzzy logic control (FLC) controller. The proposed controller is developed to ensure accurate speed and current control of SynRM drive under system disturbances and estimation of speed using artificial neural network(ANN) controller. Also, this paper proposes the analysis results to verify the effectiveness of the ALM-FNN, FLC and ANN controller.

  • Electric vehicles (EV) are developing fast during this decade due to drastic issues on the protection of environment and the shortage of energy sources, so new technologies allow the development of electric vehicles (EV) by means of electric motors associated with static converters. The proposed propulsion system consists of two induction motors (IM) that ensure the drive of the two back driving wheels. The electronic differential system ensures the robust control of the vehicle behavior on the road. It also allows controlling, independently, every driving wheel to turn at different speeds in any curve. This paper presents the study of an hybrid Fuzzy-sliding mode control (SMC) strategy for the electric vehicle driving wheels, stability improvement, in which the fuzzy logic system replace the discontinuous control action of the classical SMC law. Our electric vehicle fuzzy-sliding mode control's simulated in Matlab SIMULINK environment, the results obtained present the efficiency of the proposed control with no overshoot, the rising time is perfected with good disturbances rejections comparing with the classical control law.

  • For structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructures, displacement is a good descriptor of the structural behavior under all the potential disturbances. However, it is not easy to measure displacement of civil infrastructures, since the conventional sensors need a reference point, and inaccessibility to the reference point is sometimes caused by the geographic conditions, such as a highway or river under a bridge, which makes installation of measuring devices time-consuming and costly, if not impossible. To resolve this issue, a visionbased real-time displacement measurement system using digital image processing techniques is developed. The effectiveness of the proposed system was verified by comparing the load carrying capacities of a steel-plate girder bridge obtained from the conventional sensor and the present system. Further, to simultaneously measure multiple points, a synchronized vision-based system is developed using master/slave system with wireless data communication. For the purpose of verification, the measured displacement by a synchronized vision-based system was compared with the data measured by conventional contact-type sensors, linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) from a laboratory test.

  • This paper presents a dynamic equivalencing method in large electric power system for stability analysis. This method of modeling simplified equivalents for parts of the network outside the study area is to evaluate the stability of a study area modeled in detail. Generators are closely coupled in an electrical sense tend to swing together in groups during disturbances, and this behavior can be exploited to reduce the size of the power system model. The characteristics of generators swing together are referred to as coherency Coherency groups whose generators state trajectory are similar to the other generators state trajectory in the same coherency group by a certain disturbance. In this paper, procedures for forming dynamic equivalents of control devices of coherency-based generating units are proposed and the aggregation of the control devices such as excitation system and governor-turbine system is accomplished by this method. This method can deal with the aggregation of the same type of control devices and combination of hydro and steam unit or the many types of excitation systems. etc. This method is shown to be efficient in reducing the number of control device of generating units with small error in the study group by result of case study presented latter part of this paper.
