Telemedicine System for Korean Beef Cattle Converging Livestock Farming Practices & ICT (축산분야와 ICT 융합을 통한 한우 원격진료방안)

  • As livestock diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease are highly infectious and likely to inflict nationwide damage, it is important to detect such diseases in advance. Infection of foot-and-mouth disease is determined in the field through examination of external symptoms such as rise in body temperature. However, as the disease is carried around initially by travelling veterinarians in some cases, it is critical to measure the body temperature of livestock to detect abnormal temperature pattern early on and transmit temperature reading data remotely to a veterinarian remotely to expedite decision. In this study, we have developed a telemedicine system designed to connect veterinarians and livestock farmers and measure the body temperature of Korean beef cattle with IR sensor module linked to ubiquitous ICT platform as a solution for controlling health conditions of Korean beef cattle and improving the efficiency of livestock farming operations at individual farm, regional, and national level by converging ubiquitous ICT platform and livestock farming practices. Successfully employing the state-of-the-art IT technologies of Korea, the system proposed herein is expected to make Korea's livestock farming industry more sustainable and help the nation to secure technological preeminence in the global livestock products market.

  • This study focused on production and distribution situations of Korean organic beef cattle at Hongseong Chungnam. Case Farmers have raised cattle organically based on interchange between a few Consumers' Life Cooperatives(CLC) and them. CLC furnished with funding to purchase calves and bought the cattle beef. However, they have many problems related to procuring organic feed in producing organic beef. Presently, they have used organic byproducts from sowing farming and prepared grass places. But they don't breed organic beef cattle in a large scale because of the limitation of organic feed output.

  • Producing Korean organic beef cattle costs a great deal because it needs breeding conditions like the organic feed, an uncontaminated breeding farm and so on. So the price of Korean organic beef (KOB) is more expensive than that of Korean general beef (KGB). To overcome this adverse price condition, a case production organization in Asan will choose direct marketing routes for consumers or the shop under direct management of the organization, or franchise shops. As a result, these marketing routes are expected to narrow the price gap between KOB and KGB. And consumers will accept the price of KOB if quality of KOB is very high level, for example the first grade++.

Current situation and future prospects for beef production in Thailand - A review

  • Thailand is a country of native beef cattle resource farming. It has undergone rapid social and economic change in the past decade. Agricultural growth has been maintained by increasing the production of rice and cassava. Changing economic status also provides opportunities for beef cattle producers to meet increasing consumer demand for beef. Finishing beef cattle numbers in Thailand were about 1.0 M head in 2015. Beef produced in Thailand has exclusively been for domestic consumption. Only 1% of Thailand's beef cattle are for the premium market which is based on marbling score, 40% are sold into modern markets that consider muscling of cattle, and the remainder enter traditional markets. Cross-bred cattle for the premium market are raised within intensive systems. Most producers of premium beef are members of beef cooperatives, or have invested in their enterprises at high levels. Culled cow (native or cross-bred cattle) are mainly for small holder farm production. Malaysia, Indonesia, and other members of the Asian Economic Community (AEC) are set to become the largest beef market, which has been confirmed by 2015 through 2020 forecasts for consumption of beef that must increasingly be halal. These circumstances are likely to be challenging for beef producers in Thailand to gain a share of this market. Integration across all sectors involved in beef production in Thailand will be required.

Current situation of Hanwoo industry and future prospects for precision livestock farming (국내 한우산업 현황과 정밀축산을 활용한 한우고기 생산전망)

  • Hanwoo cattle have been genetically selected for enhancing meat quality and meat quantity since the last few decades. Beef consumption in South Korea has also increased to 11.6 kg per year in 2016 and is expected to continue to increase. For improving meat quality, Hanwoo cattle has been raised a high-energy corn-based diet for long fattening periods, which causes not increment of fat percentage in the loin muscle but increment of feeding costs. Consumer demands on the Korean beef industry are driving differing beef production systems and also changes to the beef grading system. For a sustainable Hanwoo industry, researcher in Korea have attempted to develop feeds for efficient fattening periods and precision feeding systems based on genetic information for Hanwoo cattle. Therefore, representatives of government, academics, and market association need to provide efficient collaboration for the future prospective or develop a precise management system for Hanwoo industry in Korea.
