  • This paper addresses how to reduce or redesign uncomfortable sound from small refrigerator by modifying some structures in mechanical components or operating conditions. After performing vibration analysis on each component and then sound analysis are carried out. From stepped designed experiments, we could acquire some important results that structure and flow induced vibration assumed to be a major cause to noise level and frequencies. Modifying some mechanical structure and operating conditions, uncomfortable starting noise and beating sound are suppressed. Machinery room located in refrigerator's backside is investigated for vibration and noise suppression, and some ideas for more improvement are suggested.

  • Study on swimming of microorganisms like, sperm motility, cilia beating, bacterial flagellar propulsion has found immense significance in the field of biological fluiddynamics. Because of the complexity involved, it is challenging for the researchers to model such problems. Immersed boundary method has proved its efficacy in the field of biological fluiddynamics, The present work aims at performing a numerical study on the microorganism locomotion using the immersed boundary method proposed by Peskin[1]. A two-dimensional model of the microorganism is modeled as thin elastic filament described as a sine wave. The neutrally buoyant organism undergoing deformations is immersed in a viscous and incompressible fluid. The fluid quantities are described using Eulerian coordinates and the immersed body is represented by Lagrangian coordinates. The Eulerian and Lagrangian variables are connected by the Dirac delta function. The Navier-Stokes equations governing the fluid flow are solved using the fractional step method on a staggered Cartesian grid system. The developed numerical code in FORTRAN will be validated by comparing the numerical results with the available results.

  • Various mechanical and chemical pretreatment methods including alkali treatment, pre-beating, enzyme treatment and oxidation treatment have been used to reduce the production energy of the microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). Among them, alkali swelling can be helpful to reduce the energy consumption because the internal bonding between fibrils could be weakened. In this study, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was used as a cosolvent to improve alkali pretreatment efficiency and the effects of NaOH concentration during NaOH-DMSO swelling on changes in fiber characteristics of softwood bleached kraft pulp (SwBKP) were elucidated. For alkali treatment in H2O-DMSO solvents, fiber length were decreased with increasing NaOH concentration while fiber width, curl and WRV were increased. WRV began to increase at 8% NaOH solution. In addition, above 8% concentration of NaOH, crystalline structure of pulp fibers converted from cellulose II to cellulose III by DMSO cosolvent. Comparing the previous results with this study, it was shown that DMSO cosolvent could promote swelling of pulp fibers and thus reduce NaOH concentration for the maximum swelling of fibers.

  • As a carrier of malaria and sneak of blood, mosquitoes are an unpleasant insect. However, there are several unknown natural secretes related with mosquitoes. Among them, we focused on the blood sucking process of a female mosquito. The main objective of this study is to understand the mosquito's blood sucking mechanism that can be used to resolve the problem encountered in the injection or transport of infinitesimal biological fluids in a micro-chip. At first, the velocity fields of blood-sucking flow in a proboscis were measured using a micro-particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The velocity signals of flow in the proboscis show periodic variation. This seems to be resulted from the beating of the pharyngeal pump which works as driving power. To analyze the pumping mechanism, the temporal variation of the pharyngeal pump was visualized using the synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique. The volume variation was estimated by the help of digital image processing techniques. Once the main mechanism of blood sucking process was found, a effective micro-pumping system with high efficiency would be developed in near future.

  • Long-term exposure of cigarette smoke or air pollutants to human can induce damages in the airway mucociliary function and can be closely related to the irritation and sputum formation in the respiratory system. This study was undertaken to investigate whether rat trachea can be used as a tool for evaluating the cigarette smoke quality. It was identified that, through the examination with inverted microscope, ciliary beating in 1 mm long cut of nat trachea ring was continued for at least 48 hours in saline solution at $25^{\circ}C$. The ciliostasis time in a KCN solution as a positive control was decreased with increasing the concentration of KCN. There were no significant differences in the ciliostasis time by body weight and individual variation of rats. Ciliotoxicity of whole smoke trapped in saline was not significantly changed by aging for more than 6 hrs. The ciliostasis time was in inverse proportion to the number of sample cigarettes applied. As moisture in the cigarette was increased, ciliostasis time was linearly increased. Therefore, these data indicate that the ciliotoxicity test using rat trachea in vitro can be applied to evaluate the cigarette smoke quality and to search factors for the irritation and sputum formation by cigarette smoke as well as air pollutants.

  • Use of the high frequency motor spindles are increasing for the high speed machine tools recently. The important problem in the high speed spindles is to reduce and minimize the thermal effect by the motor and ball hearings. Thermal characteristics according to the bearing preload and spindle cooling are studied for the spindle with the oil mist lubrication and high frequency motor. Temperature distribution and thermal displacement according to the spindle speed, preload and flow rate are measured. Temperature distribution and thermal displacement of the high speed spindle system can be estimated reasonably by using the three dimensional model through the finite element method. The results of analysis are compared with the measured data. This study supports thermal optimization and find out more effective cooling condition. This paper show that the suitable preload and spindle cooling are very effective to minimize the thermal effect by the motor and ball bearings.

  • The arteries are very important in cardiovascular system and easily adapt to varying flow and pressure conditions by enlarging or shrinking to meet the given hemodynamic demands. The blood flow in arteries is dominated by unsteady flow phenomena due to heart beating. In certain circumstances, however, unusual hemodynamic conditions cause an abnormal biological response and often induce circulatory diseases such as atherosclerosis, thrombosis and inflammation. Therefore quantitative analysis of the unsteady pulsatile flow characteristics in the arterial blood vessels plays important roles in diagnosing these circulatory diseases. In order to verify the hemodynamic characteristics, in-vivo measurements of blood flow inside the extraembryonic arterial bifurcation cascade of chicken embryo were carried out using a micro-PIV technique. To analyze the unsteady pulsatile flow temporally, the (low images of RBCs were obtained using a high-speed CMOS camera at 250fps with a spatial resolution of $30{\mu}m\times30{\mu}m$ in the whole blood vessels. In this study, the unusual flow conditions such as flow separation or secondary flow were not observed in the arterial bifurcations. However, the vorticity has large values in the inner side of curvature of vessels. In addition, the mean velocity in the arterial blood vessel was decreased and pulsating frequency obtained by FFT analysis of velocity data extracted in front of the each bifurcation was also decreased as the bifurcation cascaded.

  • A district heating(DH) system supplies environmentally-friend heat and is appropriate for reduction of energy consumption and/or air pollutions. The DH transmission pipe, composed of supply and return pipes, has been used to transmit the heat and prevent heat loss during transportation. The two types of pipes are operated at a temperature of $75\~115^{\circ}C\;and\;40\~65^{\circ}C$, respectively, with an operating pressure of less than 1.568MPa. The objectives of this paper are to systematize data processing of transition temperature and investigate its effects on fatigue life of DH pipes. For the sake of this, about 5 millions temperature data were measured during one year at ten locations, and then available fatigue lift estimation schemes were examined and applied to quantify the specific thermal fatigue life of each pipe. As a result, a relational database management system as well as reliable fatigue lift evaluation procedures is established for Korean DH pipes. Also, since the prototypal evaluation results satisfied both cycle-based and stress-based fatigue criteria, those can be used as useful information in the future fer optimal design, operation and energy saving via setting of efficient condition and stabilization of water temperature.

  • Adsorption of polymeric flocculants and dry strength agents onto the surface of papermaking fibers is critical for their effective utilization since the polymeric substances not adsorbed on fibers or fines keep recirculating in the papermaking system to cause various operational difficulties and loss of raw materials. Problems associated with the unadsorbed polymeric substances generate great attention because unprecedent interests in utilization of recycled papers and papermaking system closure. In this study, to understand the effects of recycling on the adsorption propensity of cationic polyacryamide (PAM) dry strength resin onto hardwood bleached kraft pulp fibers and fines a systematic approach was followed. Never dried bleached hardwood kraft pulp was recycled in two different ways. In mode one recycling experiment never dried pulp was beaten then recycled three times by employing simple drying and disintegrating steps. In mode two recycling experiment beating of the recycled pulp was carried out after each recycling step. Adsorption of cationic PAM on fibers and fines was evaluated employing Kjeldahl nitrogen analysis method. The influence of recycling on water retention value, carboxyl content, sheet density and tensile strength of the pulp was examined. As the number of recycling increased, water retention value of the fiber was reduced due to hornification and this in turn caused a decrease in adsorption of cationic PAM. On the other hand, the carboxyl content of the recycled fibers increased because of the oxidation of fibers occurred during drying, and this caused an increase in adsorption of cationic PAM. Because of these two opposing factors the adsorption of the cationic PAM on the recycled fibers decreased and then increased slightly at third recycling step. Increase of PAM adsorption, however, did not provide did not provide and strength improvement for the recycled pulp fibers indicating greater influence of the honification on interfiber bonding.

  • To diagnose cardiac arrhythmia owing to reentry mechanism, cardiac conduction system was modeled by modified Hidden Markov modeled by evaluated. First, simulation of transient conduction states and output waves were made with initially assumed parametric values of cardiac muscle repolariztion time, conduction velocity and its automaticity. The output was a series of onset time and the name of the wave. Parameters determined the rate of beating, lengths of wave intervals, rate of abnormal beats, and the like. Several parameter sets were found to simulate normal sinus rhythm, supraventricular /ventricular tachycardia, atrial /vetricular extrasystole, etc. Then, utilizing the estimation theorems of Hidden Markov Model, the best conduction path was estimated given the previous output. With this modified estimation method, close matching between the simulated conduction path and the estimated one was confirmed.
