The Current Status of the Development of Bearing Steels (베어링강의 개발동향)

  • Several alloy bearing steels have been starting to replace for conventional high carbon and high chromium bearing steel since 1980. In this paper the global bearing developing trends were summarized in several important aspects- developments in alloy bearing steels for improved service life, development of inclusion rating method in bearing steel and developments in bearing service life testing.

  • In this study, we investigated the tribology behaviour of two different bearing materials. One of these alloys content is Cu(90)-Sn(10) alloy and is widely used in the automotive industry.The other is Al alloy. This bearing content is Al-Sn-Si-Cu. Therefore, it is required to study on the lublicating characteristics of bearing according to different materials. In this study, compressor bearings made by respectively "PTFE solid lubricant" and "AI alloy with superior load carrying capacity, rubbing and impact endurance", have gone through journal bearing test. Lubrication and abrasion characteristics are evaluated by analyzing the material characteristics of a scroll compressor bearing bush. The AI alloy bearing showed the most excellent lubrication and abrasion characteristics than Cu-Sn alloy under high load condition.

  • Conventionally, Al-Sn bearing manufacturing involves casting the Al-Sn alloy and roll-bonding to a steel backing strip. This article will describe the microstructural control of Al-Sn metal bearing alloy following heat treatment. When the pure aluminum rod dipped in the melt of tin maintained below the melting point of aluminum, the melting of aluminum was accelerated with penetration of tin along the grain boundary of aluminum. The length of plate-shaped eutectic tin was decreased with heat treatment time. With even longer heat treatment time over 1 hour the length of eutectic tin didn't decrease any more, while resulting in coarsening of aluminum matrix. Exuded liquid of eutectic tin was formed at the surface of Al-Sn alloy after heat treatment even at below eutectic temperature.

Wear properties of Al-Pb alloys produced by a forced stirring method (강제교반법으로 제조된 Al-Pb계 베어링 합금의 마모특성)

  • Al-Pb-Si bearing alloys were produced by a forced stirring method and a rapid solidification process to study wear properties of bearing alloys. A homogeneous distribution of Pb particles in Al matrix could be obtained by means of the forced stirring and the rapid cooling during the casting. The wear properties of bearing alloys were tested by a pin-on-disc wear tester. The change in microstructure according to the alloy manufacturing variables was observed by the backscattered electron images. Al-Pb and Al-Si binary alloys showed a transition from mild to severe wear. The transition was not found in Al-Pb-Si ternary alloys. It could be concluded that the lubricatioin effect of Pb and the strengthening effect of Si in the ternary alloys enhanced the bearing properties. A Al-25%Pb-13%Si alloy showed the lowest coefficient of friction in this experiment. It indicated that the optimum concentration of alloy was 25% Pb and 13% Si when the forced stirring of melt and water-cooled-copper-mold solidification were adopted.

  • The Fe-Mn damping Alloys which combine a high damping capacity with good mechanical properties can provide attractive technical and economic solutions to problems involving fatigue, noise and vibration. This study is aimed at finding its applicability to divided spherical bearing in bridge. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) The specific damping capacity of the Fe-Mn damping alloy is superior to that of SM490B. 2) The divided spherical bearing manufactured Fe-Mn damping alloy passes the load test to confirm applicability of that in bridge.

  • The effects of Ag addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of 7050 Al alloy were investigated. Various homogenizing and aging treatments were carried out to analyze the controversial effects of Ag in 7050 Al alloy. Transmission electron microscopy(TEM) was used for microstructural analysis. The hardening precipitates(${\eta}^{\prime}$) become finer with Ag addition. It suggests that Ag promotes easier nucleation of ${\eta}{\prime}$. The strength of overaged Ag bearing alloys are higher than that of Ag free alloy. Hardening precipitates(${\eta}^{\prime}$) in Ag bearing alloys are smaller than that of Ag free alloys, because the growth rate of ${\eta}^{\prime}$ during overaging stage is lower in Ag bearing alloys.

Effects of In on the Precipitation Phenomena of Al-2.1Li-2.9Cu Alloy by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (열분석법에 의한 Al-2.1Li-2.9Cu합금이 석출현상에 미치는 In 첨가의 영향)

  • A study was conducted to examine the effects of In addition on the precipitation behaviors of Al-2.1Li-2.9Cu alloy by differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy and micro-hardness tester. DSC analysis was measured over the temperature range of $25{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of $2{\sim}20^{\circ}C$/min. The heat evolution peaks due to the formation of GP zone and ${\delta}$'phase shift to higher temperature and the peaks to $T_1$ and ${\theta}$'phases shift to lower temperature by In addition. From this result, it was proved that the formation of GP zone and ${\delta}$'phase is suppresed whereas that of $T_1$ and ${\theta}$'phases are accelerated by the In addition of 0.15wt%. The age hardening curve aged at $190^{\circ}C$ showed that the In bearing alloy(alloy B) has more faster age hardening response and a higher peak hardness than In-free alloy(alloy A), attributed to the fine and homogeneous distribution of $T_1$ and ${\theta}$'phases. The activation energies for the formation of ${\delta}$'phase in In-free and In-bearing alloys are 22.3kcal/mol and 18.6kcal/mol, respectively. Those for $T_1(+{\theta}^{\prime})$ phase of In-free and In-bearing alloys are 24.3 and 37.5kcal/mol, respectively. Quenched-in excess vacancies play an important role to the formation of precipitates.

Energy-balance assessment of shape memory alloy-based seismic isolation devices

  • This study compares the performance of two smart isolation systems that utilize superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) for seismic protection of bridges using energy balance concepts. The first isolation system is a SMA/rubber-based isolation system (SRB-IS) and consists of a laminated rubber bearing that decouples the superstructure from the bridge piers and a SMA device that provides additional energy dissipation and re-centering capacity. The second isolation system, named as superelastic-friction base isolator (S-FBI), combines the superelastic SMAs with a flat steel-Teflon bearing rather than a laminated rubber bearing. Seismic energy equations of a bridge structure with SMA-based isolation systems are established by absolute and relative energy balance formulations. Nonlinear time history analyses are performed in order to assess the effectiveness of the isolation systems and to compare their performance. The program RSPMatch 2005 is employed to generate spectrum compatible ground motions that are used in time history analyses of the isolated bridge. Results indicate that SRB-IS produces higher seismic input energy, recoverable energy and base shears as compared to the S-FBI system. Also, it is shown that combining superelastic SMAs with a sliding bearing rather than rubber bearing significantly reduce the amount of the required SMA material.
