  • Using modal transmission-line theory (MTLT), itexplores rigorously the polarization characteristics of TE-TM mode optical polarized beamsplitter with misaligned input interface. To verify the validity of the approach proposed in this paper, a novel polarization condition is defined, and it compares and evaluates with the polarization condition of coupled-mode theory (CMT) used widely. The numerical results reveal that the discontinuity of misaligned input interface has nothing to do with the polarization condition of beamsplitter. Furthermore, the condition of CMT is no longer effective at the asymmetric guiding structures with strong power coupling.

  • In this letter, we propose a dual autostereoscopic display platform employing a natural interaction method, which will be useful for sharing visual data with users. To provide 3D visualization of a model to users who collaborate with each other, a beamsplitter is used with a pair of autostereoscopic displays, providing a visual illusion of a floating 3D image. To interact with the virtual object, we track the user's hands with a depth camera. The gesture recognition technique we use operates without any initialization process, such as specific poses or gestures, and supports several commands to control virtual objects by gesture recognition. Experiment results show that our system performs well in visualizing 3D models in real-time and handling them under unconstrained conditions, such as complicated backgrounds or a user wearing short sleeves.

  • We analyze several problems concerning the operation of the optical feedback prebias control scheme in the loser diode optical transmitter and present a LD simulation circuit as a way of adjusting the component's optimum value without using the Laser - triode. 1.5% light power decrease was observed between the temperature range of $0^{\circ}C$ and 36$^{\circ}C$ in which the total light power of LD was used for feedback loop and fairly good operation was demonstrated when a star coupler was employed as a beamsplitter by which approximately 1% portion of the light power was feedbacked.

  • Interplay between calcium ions ($Ca^{2+}$) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) delicately controls diverse pathophysiological functions of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). However, details of the $Ca^{2+}$ and ROS signaling network have been hindered by the absence of a method for dual measurement of $Ca^{2+}$ and ROS. Here, a real-time monitoring system for $Ca^{2+}$ and ROS was established using a genetically encoded hydrogen peroxide indicator, HyPer, and a ratiometric $Ca^{2+}$ indicator, fura-2. For the simultaneous detection of fura-2 and HyPer signals, 540 nm emission filter and 500 nm~ dichroic beamsplitter were combined with conventional exciters. The wide excitation spectrum of HyPer resulted in marginal cross-contamination with fura-2 signal. However, physiological $Ca^{2+}$ transient and hydrogen peroxide were practically measurable in HyPer-expressing, fura-2-loaded VSMCs. Indeed, distinct $Ca^{2+}$ and ROS signals could be successfully detected in serotonin-stimulated VSMCs. The system established in this study is applicable to studies of crosstalk between $Ca^{2+}$ and ROS.

  • Metal 3D-printing technology enables the manufacture of complex features or internal structures, which is not possible in fabrication by conventional cutting methods. The most successful types of metal 3D printing have been powder bed diffusion and directed energy deposition, which use laser heads exploiting high-power laser sintering metal powder. In this study, a cost-effective optical design was proposed for a 2-kW-level fiber laser head. Only two commercial lenses, a beamsplitter and a window, are used in the laser head, satisfying the technological requirements. According to the optical design, the spot size was 2.54 mm, and the stand-off distance from the laser head was 295 mm. The intensity distribution was Gaussian. Thus, smooth power sintering was possible without any laser spot marks. Monte Carlo analysis was employed to verify the consistency of the optical performance under conventional assembly tolerance.

  • A division-of-amplitude type photopolarimeter has been constructed for the analysis of the dynamic optical characteristics of liquid crystal panels, one of the essential components of liquid crystal displays. In this instrument an incoming light ray, whose state of polarization is to be determined, is divided into three rays of nearly same intensities and of identical polarization state by using NPBS'(non-polarizing beam splitters). Each of the three rays is further divided into two components of orthogonal polarization states by using a PBS(polarizing cube beamsplitter) or by using a combination of a quater wave plate followed by a PBS. The intensity of each ray is measured by using a photodiode to produce a set of six photo-signals, which in turn are converted into four Stokes parameters describing the state of polarization of the incoming ray. Performance test of the insrument shows that its time resolution is 80 $mutextrm{s}$, accuracy $\pm$0.3 degrees when the state of polarization of the incoming ray is representated on the Poincare sphere.
