  • An accurate and rational analytical proposal for determining the shear strengths of interior beam-column joints is presented in this paper. The proposed equation is derived using a compatiblity aided truss model theory. The accuracy of the proposed equation was checked by comparing calculated shear strength of joints with experimental results reported papers in literature. The comparison showed that the proposed equation predicted the experimental shear strength of joints with reasonable agreement.

  • The buckling problem of linearly tapered micro-columns is investigated on the basis of modified strain gradient elasticity theory. Bernoulli-Euler beam theory is used to model the non-uniform micro column. Rayleigh-Ritz solution method is utilized to obtain the critical buckling loads of the tapered cantilever micro-columns for different taper ratios. Some comparative results for the cases of rectangular and circular cross-sections are presented in graphical and tabular form to show the differences between the results obtained by modified strain gradient elasticity theory and those achieved by modified couple stress and classical theories. From the results, it is observed that the differences between critical buckling loads achieved by classical and those predicted by non-classical theories are considerable for smaller values of the ratio of the micro-column thickness (or diameter) at its bottom end to the additional material length scale parameters and the differences also increase due to increasing of the taper ratio.

  • A macro-element model is developed to account for shear deformation and bond slip of reinforcement bars in the beam-column joint region of reinforced concrete structures. The joint region is idealized by two springs in series, one representing shear deformation and the other representing bond slip. The softened truss model theory is adopted to establish the shear force-shear deformation relationship and to determine the shear capacity of the joint. A detailed model for the bond slip of the reinforcing bars at the beam-column interface is presented. The proposed macro-element model of the joint is validated using available experimental data on beam-column connections representing exterior joints in ductile and nonductile frames.

  • Nonlinear finite element analysis is conducted to predict the structural behavior of precast concrete column and steel beam connected by using bolted connections. The Nonlinear FEM program is based on the modified compression field theory which has good accuracy in the concrete structures. The link element is properly used to model the discontinuity between precast concrete column and steel beam. Predictions from the proposed model are compared with experimental results and it is concluded that structural behaviors of the composite structures, such as strength capacity, crack pattern and failure mode, can be predicted quite successfully.

  • Main goal of this study is to develop MATLAB programming for exact analysis of distortional deformation of the straight box girder. For this purpose, a theory for distortional deformation theory is firstly summarized and then a BEF (Beam on Elastic Foundation) theory is presented using analogy of the corresponding variables. Finally, the governing equation of the beam-column element on elastic foundation is derived. An element stiffness matrix of the beam element is established via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem. In order to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the element using exact dynamic stiffness matrix, buckling loads for the continuous beam structures with elastic foundation and distortional deformations of box girders are calculated.

  • In the previous analytical studies on 2D reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column joints, the modified compression field theory (MCFT) and the strut-and-tie method (STM) are usually employed. In this paper, the limitations of these analytical models for RC joint applications are reviewed. Essentially for predictions of RC joint shear behaviour, the MCFT is not applicable, while the STM can only predict the ultimate shear strength. To eliminate these limitations, an improved STM is derived and applied to some commonly encountered 2D joints, viz., interior and exterior joints, subjected to monotonic loading. Compared with the other STMs, the most attracting novelty of the proposed improved STM is that all critical stages of the shear stress-strain relationships for RC joints can be predicted, which cover the stages characterized by concrete cracking, transverse reinforcement yielding and concrete strut crushing. For validation and demonstration of superiority, the shear stress-strain relationships of interior and exterior RC beam-column joints from published experimental studies are employed and compared with the predictions by the proposed improved STM and other widely-used analytical models, such as the MCFT and STM.

  • The study presented experimental and numerical investigation on the seismic performance of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) L-shaped column- reinforced concrete (RC) beam joints. Various parameters described as steel configuration form, axial compressive ratio, loading angle, and the existence of slab were examined through 4 planar joints and 7 spatial joints. The characteristics of the load-displacement response included the bearing capacity, ductility, story drift ratio, energy-dissipating capacity, and stiffness degradation were analyzed. The results showed that shear failure and flexural failure in the beam tip were observed for planar joints and spatial joint, respectively. And RC joint with slab failed with the plastic hinge in the slab and bottom of the beam. The results indicated that hysteretic curves of spatial joints with solid-web steel were plumper than those with hollow-web specimens. The capacity of planar joints was higher than that of space joints, while the opposite was true for energy-dissipation capacity and ductility. The high compression ratio contributed to the increase in capacity and initial stiffness of the joint. The elastic and elastic-plastic story deformation capacity of L-shaped column frame joints satisfied the code requirement. A design formula of joint shear resistance based on the superposition theory and equilibrium plasticity truss model was proposed for engineering application.

  • This study concerns about calculating exact natural frequencies of frames using a single variable shear deformation theory (SVSDT) which considers the parabolic shear stress distribution across the cross section. Free vibration analyses are performed for multi-bay, multi-storey and multi-bay multi-storey type frame structures. Dynamic stiffness formulations are derived and used to obtain first five natural frequencies of frames. Different beam and column cross sections are considered to reveal their effects on free vibration analysis. The calculated natural frequencies are tabulated with the results obtained using Euler-Bernoulli Beam Theory (EBT) and Timoshenko Beam Theory (TBT). Moreover, the effects of inner and outer columns on natural frequencies are compared for multi-bay frames. Several mode shapes are plotted.

  • To explore the effect of Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) on improving the progressive collapse resistance of reinforced concrete frames under a middle column removal scenario, six beam-column substructures were tested by quasistatic vertical loading. Among the six specimens, four were ECC-concrete composite specimens consisting of different depth of ECC at the bottom or top of the beam and concrete in the rest of the beam, while the other two are ordinary reinforced concrete specimens with different concrete strength grades for comparison. The experimental results demonstrated that ECC-concrete composite specimens can improve the bearing capacity of a beam-column substructure at the stages of compressive arch action (CAA) and catenary action in comparison with ordinary concrete specimen. Under the same depth of ECC, the progressive collapse resistance of a specimen with ECC at the beam bottom was superior to that at the beam top. With the increase of the proportion of ECC arranged at the beam bottom, the bearing capacity of a composite substructure was increased, but the increase rate slows down with the proportion. Meanwhile, the nonlinear numerical analysis software MSC Marc was used to simulate the whole loading process of the six specimens. Theoretical formulas to calculate the capacities of ECC-concrete composite specimens at the stages of flexural action, CAA and catenary action are proposed. Based on the research results, this study suggests that ECC should be laid out at the beam bottom and the layout depth should be within 25% of the total beam depth.
