  • To reasonably predict the behaviors for RC flat-plate structures, analysis model considering the flexural stiffness of slabs is required. FEMA 273 and ACI 318-99 refer to theoretical analysis models of two-way slab systems under lateral loading but the actual application method is not suggested. In this study, the modeling and application methods of the flat-plates using effective beam concept are suggested. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The effective beam width model suggested in this study is very useful to model flat-Plate structures subjected to seismic loading for three dimensional analysis 2) The result of analysis for idealized flat-plate example using the effective beam widths considering the effect of the slab crack is shown upper value for displacements. Whereas the model considering effective beam width coefficients only is shown upper value for unbalanced moments

  • We first numerically analyzed the characteristics of a silicon-based grating structure for beam steering. The analysis includes the basic principle of the grating structure according to the wavelength, peak radiation angle, radiation efficiency, and full-width at the half maximum(FWHM) of the radiation angle. Based on the analysis, we propose a silicon-based grating structure integrated with distributed Bragg reflector(DBR) to obtain a high radiation efficiency and narrow beam width simultaneously. We performed the numerical optimization of the radiation efficiency and FWHM of the radiation angle according to the DBR position. By the design optimization using the proposed grating structure compatible with the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor(CMOS) process, we achieved a maximum radiation efficiency of 87.1% and minimum FWHM of radiation angle of $4.68^{\circ}$.

  • In this study, the performance of shear deficient reinforced concrete (RC) beams with rectangular cross-sections, which were externally bonded reinforced (EBR) with high strength CFRP and GFRP strips composite along shear spans, has been experimentally and analytically investigated under vertical load. In the study, the minimum CFRP and GFRP strips width over spacing were considered. The shear beam with turned end to a bending beam was investigated by applying different composite strips. Therefore various arising in each of strength, ductility, rigidity, and energy dissipation capacity were obtained. A total of 12 small-scaled experimental programs have been performed. Beam dimensions have been taken as 100×150×1000 mm. Four beams have been tested as unstrengthened samples. This paper focuses on the effect of minimum CFRP and GFRP strip width on behaviours of RC beams shear-strengthened with full-wrapping, U-wrapping, and U-wrapping+longitudinal bonding strips. Strengthened beams showed significant increments for flexural ductility, energy dissipation, and inelastic performance. The full wrapping strips applied against shear failure have increased the load-carrying capacity of samples 53%-63% interval rate. Although full wrapping is the best strengthening choice, the U-wrapping and U-wrapping+longitudinal strips of both CFRP and GFRP bonding increased the shear capacity by 53%~75% compared to the S2 sample. In terms of ductility, the best result has been obtained by the type of strengthening where the S5 beam was completely GFRP wrapped. The experimental results were also compared with the analytically given by ACI440.2R-17, TBEC-2019 and FIB-2001. Especially in U-wrapped beams, the estimation of FIB was determined to be 81%. The estimates of the other codes are far from meeting the experimental results; therefore, essential improvements should be applied to the codes, especially regarding CFRP and GFRP deformation and approaches for longitudinal strip connections. According to the test results, it is suggested that GFRP, which is at least as effective but cheaper than CFRP, may be preferred for strengthening applications.

  • We patterned nano-width lines on a super hard bulk diamond substrate by varying the ion beam current and ion beam sources with a dual beam field ion beam (FIB). In addition, we successfully fabricated two-dimensional nano patterns and three-dimensional nano plate modules. We prepared nano lines on a diamond and a silicon substrate at the beam condition of 30 kV, 10 pA $\sim$ 5 nA with $Ga^+$ ion and $H_2O$ assisted ion sources. We measured each of the line-width, line-depth, etched line profiles, etch rate, and aspect ratio, and then compared them. We confirmed that nano patterning was possible on both a bulk diamond and a silicon substrate. The etch rate of $H_2O$ source can be enhanced about two times than that of Ga source. The width of patterns on a diamond was smaller than that on a silicon substrate at the same ion beam power The sub-100 nm patterns on a diamond were made under the charge neutralization mode to prevent charge accumulation. We successfully made a two-dimensional, 240 nm-width text of the 300-lettered Lord's Prayer on a gem diamond with 30 kV-30 pA FIB. The patterned text image was readable with a scanning electron microscope. Moreover, three dimensional nano-thick plate module fabrication was made successfully with an FIB and a platinum deposition, and electron energy loss spectrum (EELS) analysis was easily performed with the prepared nano plate module.

  • Taguchi methods have been used for a long time to improve the product quality and process performance of a manufacturing system, Few researchers have applied this methodology in laser beam cutting (LBC) of sheet metals and found the considerable improvement in cut qualities. In all experimental investigations of LBC so far, the objective was to optimize the single quality characteristic at a time. In this paper the simultaneous optimization of multiple quality characteristics such as Kerf width and material removal rate (MRR) during pulsed Nd:YAG LBC of thin sheet of magnetic material (high Silicon-steel) has been presented using Taguchi's quality loss function. The results show the considerable improvement in multiple S/N ratio as compared to initial cutting condition. Also, the comparison of results from single and multi-objective optimization have been presented and it was found that the loss in quality is always possible shifting from single quality to multiple quality optimization.

  • It is practical to taper the element (e.g., antenna or sensor) spacing with uniform weight rather than to taper the weights with uniform spacing. In a rectangular array, a triangular grid geometry of elements is more economical than a rectangular grid geometry in terms of reducing the number of elements. A space-tapering approach is proposed to improve the performance of a rectangular phased array with a triangular grid geometry of elements above a ground plane. The effects of space tapering on the main beam width and sidelobe level are discussed. It is shown that the proposed approach improves the sidelobe performance while the main beam width becomes a little broader.

  • In order to predict the case depth and case width in laser transformation hardening, a finite element method was used to analyze the temperature distribution on the material. Laser hardening of the specimens of SM45C and STE11steels was experimented by using the continuous wave CO$_{2}$ laser with the various travel speeds and the defocused Gaussian beam mode. Phosphate coating was adopted on the surface of SM45C to increase the absorption of 10.6 .mu. m laser energy. Experimental data show good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The maximum possible case depth can be predicted for the given laser hardening conditions, such as laser power, and travel speed.

  • We attempted the first measurement of the spectral width of the nickel-like molybdenum x-ray laser (${\lambda}\;=\;18.895\;nm$) by use of a high-resolution spectrometer in order to determine the strength of the magnetic field required for the generation of a circularly polarized x-ray laser. The spectral width was measured to be ${\Delta}{\lambda}\;=\;18\;m{\AA}$ under the substantial lasing condition. The magnetic field required for the generation of a circularly polarized x-ray laser was 40 T. The splitting of the x-ray laser line was clearly obtained under 15 T external magnetic field. The strength of the magnetic field estimated from the splitting of the x-ray laser line was large compared with the external magnetic field. It implies that there might be an alternative mechanism for enhancement of the magnetic field in the gain medium plasma.

  • Background: Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is the most accurate for calculating radiation dose distribution and determining patient dose. In MC simulations of the therapeutic accelerator, the characteristics of the initial electron must be precisely determined in order to achieve accurate simulations. However, It has been computation-, labor-, and time-intensive to predict the beam characteristics through predominantly empirical approach. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships between electron beam parameters and dose distribution, with the goal of simplifying the MC commissioning process. Materials and Methods: The Varian Clinac 2300 IX machine was modeled with the Geant4 MC-toolkit. The percent depth dose (PDD) and lateral beam profiles were assessed according to initial electron beam parameters of mean energy, radial intensity distribution, and energy distribution. Results and Discussion: The PDD values increased on average by 4.36% when the mean energy increased from 5.6 MeV to 6.4 MeV. The PDD was also increased by 2.77% when the energy spread increased from 0 MeV to 1.019 MeV. In the lateral dose profile, increasing the beam radial width from 0 mm to 4 mm at the full width at half maximum resulted in a dose decrease of 8.42% on the average. The profile also decreased by 4.81% when the mean energy was increased from 5.6 MeV to 6.4 MeV. Of all tested parameters, electron mean energy had the greatest influence on dose distribution. The PDD and profile were calculated using parameters optimized and compared with the golden beam data. The maximum dose difference was assessed as less than 2%. Conclusion: The relationship between the initial electron and treatment beam quality investigated in this study can be used in Monte Carlo commissioning of medical linear accelerator model.
