  • Microplastics and nanoplastics (NMPs) are considered one of hazardous contaminants in marine ecosystems due to their toxic effects, such as reproduction disorder and oxidative stress, on marine organisms. Although water temperature is rising due to global climate change, little information on the toxicological interaction between NMPs and temperature is available. Therefore, in this study, we confirmed the toxicity of NMPs (polystyrene [PS] beads; 0.05- and 6-㎛) on brackish water fleas (Diaphanosoma celebensis) depending on increased temperature (30℃ and 35℃) at individual and molecular levels. In the chronic toxicity test, the group exposed to high temperatures showed an earlier first reproduction time compared to the normal temperatures group, but it was delayed by co-exposure to NMPs at 35℃. Notably, the total reproduction decreased significantly only after 0.05-㎛ PS beads exposure at 30℃. Interaction analysis showed that first reproduction time, modulation of the antioxidant-related gene (GSTS1), heat shock gene (Hsp70), and ecdysteroid pathway-related genes (EcR_A, EcR_B, and CYP314A1) were closely related to temperature and PS beads size. These results indicate that microplastics have size-dependent toxicity, and their toxicity can be enhanced at high temperatures. In addition, higher temperatures and PS beads exposure may have negative effects on reproduction. This study suggests that various factors such as water temperature should be considered when evaluating the toxicity of microplastics in marine ecosystems, and provides an understanding of the complex toxic interaction between water temperature and microplastics for marine zooplankton.

  • Osmotic granule system which is one of the drug delivery systems has been developed to improve manufacturing process and other problems of tablet osmotic systems. It consists of water swellable seed layer, nifedipine drug layer, and drug release controlled membrane layer and manufactured by fluidized bed coater. The granule size and mombrane thickness can be controlled by various amounts of seed and coating solution, respectively. It could be observed that the morphology of osmotic granule was different at each coating step as well as type of coating solution. The bigger the size of granule, the slower the release rate was observed due to decreasing the total specific surface wed of granule. Also, it was observed that the increase of membrane thickness was caused to retard the dissolution of nifedipine due to decreasing the water absorption rate. The drug solubility for dissolution media is greatly affected to nifedipine release. From these results, we assured that osmotic granule can be fabricated by fluidized bed coating methods, and the appropriate release profile could be controlled by the controlling of bead size, membrane thickness and dissolution media.

  • A quantitative understanding on the effect of the welding conditions on weld joint dimensions and weld thermal cycle is difficult through experimental studies alone. The experimental realization of temperature distribution in the weld pool is proved to be extremely difficult due to the small size of welds, high peak temperature and steep temperature gradients in weld pool. This review deals with the heat transfer and fluid flow analysis to understand the parametric influence of a single wire submerged arc welding (SAW) and multi-wire SAW processes on the weld bead dimensions, temperature and fluid flow distribution in the weldment.

  • In this experiment the effects of the packing structure of pigment on the surface characteristics (smoothness and gloss) of coated paper are studied. Four different kinds of inorganic pigments(clay), ground calcium carbonate(GCC), two of precipitated calcium carbonates(PCC), and two organic pigments(solid bead and hollow type) were used. The method of measuring the relative sediment volume(RSV) was used to analyze the packing structure of coating layer. The relative sediment volume was measured, using the pressure dewatering dry-cake method(PDDM) and centrifuge method. Also, the particle size distribution of coating pigment was determined. The results showed that small amount of organic pigment, added to inorganic pigment, improved smoothness and its effect was greater when GCC was used as inorganic pigment. The efficiency of organic pigment depended upon the inorganic pigment since the organic pigment is packed in the pores formed by the inorganic pigment.

  • In this study, we synthesized bead-type GMA-DVB copolymer using glycidylmethacrylate (GMA) with high reactivity and hydrophilicity. Macrorecticular anion exchanger containing the trimethylammonium group were then prepared by amination with trimethylammonium chloride. We observed that the size of $NO_3^-$ is smaller than that of $SO_4^{2-}$ which disturb $NO_3^-$ removal in most of coexistent anions in ground water. Thus we investigated selective affinity for $NO_3^-$ and properties of individual ion exchangers with various DVB content. For each resins, we confirmed formation of copolymer by FT-IR spectrometer and investigated ion exchange capacity, swelling ratio, the amination yield and the effect with degree of crosslinking on adsorbability for nitrate. When amount of DVB is 4 wt%, amination yield, ion exchange capacity and swelling ratio was 384.3%, 3.25 meq/g and 77.1%, respectively. In these result, it can found that synthetic optimal condition is 4 wt% DVB content for monomer.

  • This study represents the synthetic characteristics of styrene-DVB copolymer which is used as a catalyst support for the removal of tritium in CANDU. To evaluate the effect of solvent on the styrene-DVB polymeric support, the solvating power dependent on various kinds and composition of solvents was calculated. In order to synthesize the macroreticular type polymer bead, the following conditions are needed; solvating power should be higher than 1 for 20% of crosslinkage and higher than 3 for 40% of crosslinkage. Stabilization of organic monomers at about $40^{\circ}C$ for more than 2 hours is prerequisite. Removal of solvent prior to drying is preferred for the post-treatment of the bead. The polymer particle size was increased by lowering concentration of surfactant and stirring speed.

  • The suction pressure was measured with respect to operational time by the backwashable flat sheet membrane module in membrane bioreactor (MBR). The membrane module having the nominal pore size of 0.2 ㎛ and the effective membrane area of 128cm2 was submerged in MLSS 8,000 mg/L active sludge aqueous solution. The suction pressure was observed with respect to permeation flux and the quorum quenching (QQ) treatment. The effects of FR and SFCO operation methods were compared and analyzed in the experimental groups: vacant bead (VB), BH4 and DKY-1 beads. The suction pressure reduction was the most effective for the permeation flux 40 L/m2 ⋅h with the injection of DKY-1 QQ beads. Also, the suction pressure reduction by the backwashing method was more than twice for using DKY-1 QQ beads.

  • In this study, effect of nitrogen volume in the shielding gas of Ar-$N_2$ mixing gas on the bead shape, hardness and microstructure of GTA welds of 3mm thick Commercial Pure Ti was investigated. As the nitrogen volume increased, the welding current for full penetration was reduced and hardness in the fusion zone significantly increased compared with that of the base metal, but there is no difference in the hardness of HAZ. Microstructure in the fusion zone with pure Ar gas changed from equiaxed alpha of the base metal to serrated alpha. On the other hand, microstructure using Ar-$N_2$ mixing gas changed to acicular alpha. With the increasing of nitrogen content, the amount of acicular alpha increased and the size of that was fine.

  • After high power lasers are avaliable in the commercial market, the number of applications of the laser welding has been increased in manufacturing industries. Although the tailored blank laser welding of butt jointed steel sheets is well known recently in the automotive industries, the lap joint laser welding is a new technology to the automotive manufacturing people as well as the design people. But the deep penetration laser welding seems to be preferred to the partial penetration welding for the lap joint welding in the automotive manufacturers because the partial penetration is a serious deflect for the butt joint. In this study, the feasibility of partial penetration welding fur the lap joint $CO_2$ laser welding was studied fur the 1mm thick 390MPa high strength steel sheets for automotive bodies. The process window of the lap joint partial penetration welding was obtained from experiments with the gap size and the welding speed as process parameters. The partial penetration welding was found excellent on the basis of the tensile shear strength and sectional geometry. The bead width, input energy Per volume, tensile-shear strength, deformation energy and the sectional geometries after tensile-shear tests of partial penetration welded specimens are compared with those of full penetration welded specimens with a series of gaps and welding speeds.
