  • It is important to investigate the relationship between weld process parameters and weld bead geometry for adaptive arc robot welding. However, it is difficult to predict an exact back-bead owing to gap in process of butt welding. In this paper, the quantitative prediction system to specify the relationship external weld conditions and weld bead geometry was developed to get suitable back-bead in butt welding which is widely applied on industrial field. Multiple regression analysis and artificial neural network were used as the research methods. And, the results of two prediction methods were compared and analyzed.

  • Prediction of the product shape in sheet casting process is performed from the numerical simulation. A three-dimensional finite element method is used to investigate the flow behavior and to examine the effects of processing conditions on the sheet produced. Effects of inertia, gravity, surface tension and non-Newtonian viscosity on the thickness profile of the sheet are considered since the edge bead and the flow patterns in the chill roll region have great influence on the quality of the products. In the numerical simulation with free surface flows, the spine method is adopted to update the free surface, and the force-free boundary condition is imposed along the take-up plane to avoid severe singularity problems existing at the take-up plane. From the numerical results of steady isothermal flows of a generalized Newtonian fluid, it is shown that the draw ratio plays a major role in predicting the shape of the final sheet produced and the surface tension has considerable effect on the bead thickness ratio and the bead width fraction, while shear-thinning and/or tension-thickening viscosity affect the degree of neck-in.

  • Gasket of vehicle engine maintains airtight between cylinder head and engine block under high temperature and pressure, and plays important role in heat conduction of engine. And the characterization of the nonlinear behavior of metal gasket fer various bead shapes is very important as basic research for estimation of gasket durability. But it is very difficult to analyze the behavior of gasket In real experiment. In this paper, to analysis effects of the bead shape on the nonlinear behavior of cylinder head gasket under uniform pressure, the virtual experiment using the nonlinear finite element method was performed. Results are analyzed with residual deformation and the sealing pressure. With the increase of the height and the width of bead, the residual deformation and the sealing pressure increase. And if the height is very high and the width is very narrow, the wrinkles are occurred in the gasket while working.

  • One of the significant subject in the automatic arc welding is to establish control system of the welding parameters for controlling bead geometry as a criterion to evaluate the quality of arc welding. This paper proposes an inference algorithm for bead geometry in CMA Welding using Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm. The characteristic welding parameters are measured by the circuit composed of hall sensor, voltage divider tachometer, etc. and then the bead geometry of each weld pool is calculated and detected by an image processing with CCD camera and a measuring with microscope. The relationships between the characteristic welding parameters and the bead geometry have been arranged empirically. From the result of experiments, membership functions and fuzzy rules are tuned and determined by the learning of neural network, and then the relationship between actual bead geometry and inferred bead geometry are concluded by fuzzy logic controller. In the applied inference system of bead geometry using Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm, the inference error percent is within -5%∼+4% in case of bead width, -10%∼+10% in bead height, -5%∼+6% in bead area, -10%∼+10% in penetration. Use of the Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm allows the CMA Welding system to evaluate the quality in bead geometry in real time as the welding parameters change.

  • In GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding) process, bead geometry (penetration, bead width and height) is a criterion to estimate welding quality. Bead geometry is affected by welding current, arc voltage and travel speed, shielding gas, CTWB (contact- tip to workpiece distance) and so on. In this paper, welding process variables were selected as welding current, arc voltage and travel speed. And bead geometry was reasoned from the chosen welding process variables using negro-fuzzy algorithm. Neural networks was applied to design FL(fuzzy logic). The parameters of input membership functions and those of consequence functions in FL were tuned through the method of learning by backpropagation algorithm. Bead geometry could be reasoned from welding current, arc voltage, travel speed on FL using the results learned by neural networks.

  • In this paper, the prediction for the optimized bead geometry such as bead width, height, penetration and bead area in the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding with Taguchi method is presented. An orthogonal array, and the Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio employed to investigate the welding quality characteristics together in the selection of process parameters in the GMA welding process, to analyze the effect of each process parameter on the bead geometry and to finally determine the process parameters with the optimal bead geometry. Experimental results fi-om this research show that the Taguchi method provides an effective tool to enhance the accuracy of the optimized bead geometry.

  • In the circumferential welding of pipe, welding phenomenon changes with the position of pipe. Especially in the overhead position, back bead of vertical-up position would be sunk. To investigate the size of back bead and keyhole with the change of the flow rate of pilot and shield gas at each position, bead-on plate welds were conducted on 6mm thickness SS400 with inclined-up position. When the rest of welding conditions remained constant, the width of back bead was increased as the flow rate of pilot gas was increased. And back bead tended to convex as the flow rate of shield gas was increased.

  • In GMA welding processes, bead contour and penetration patterns are criterion to estimate weld quality. Bead geometry is commonly defined with width, height and depth. When weaving is taken into account, selection of welding conditions is known to be difficult. Thus, empirical or trial-and-error method are usually introduced. This study examined the correlation of welding process variables including weaving parameters with bead geometry using srtificial neural networks(ANN). The main task of the Ann estimator is to realize the mapping characteristics from the sampled welding process variables to the actual bead geometry through training. After the neural network model is constructed, welding process variables for desired bead geometry is selected by inverse model. Experimental varification of the inverse model is conducted through actual welding.

  • A full-bead of multi-layer-steel engine head gasket, taking charge of the dynamic sealing of combustion chamber, is susceptible to fatigue failure. The fatigue durability of full-bead was assessed with the finite element analysis results and the high-cycle multi-axial fatigue theory. The assessment aimed to reveal the effects of the forming parameters and dimensions of full-bead. The results show that the selection of embossing parameters producing less deformation of bead plate is beneficial for the improvement of durability while the flatting has marginal influence. The fatigue durability also improves with the increase in the width of full-bead and the radial length of bore-side flat region. However, the dimensional effects are limited due to the occurrence of snap-through.

  • This study is to investigate the optimum conditions of Nd:YAG laser beam welding for Zircaloy-4 end cap closure by optical fiber transmission. Laser welding parameters which affect the penetration depth and bead width were experimentally examined using the various beam radius by the beam quality analyzer, joint geometries of end cap and the laser parameters which mean pulse width, repetition rate and pulse energy. Also, an optimum welding speed and the effect of assistant gas with varying the flow rate of He were investigated. We found that the laser average power for the end cap welding will be 230W and rotation speed must not exceed 8 RPM, the best position of focus using optical fiber with 600.mu.m will be 2 to 3mm below the surface of the material.
