전고체 리튬 이차전지용 합금계 음극 소재의 연구 동향 (Recent Progress of Alloy-Based All-Solid-State Li-Ion Battery Anodes)

  • The increasing demand for high-performance energy storage systems has highlighted the limitations of conventional Li-ion batteries (LIBs), particularly regarding safety and energy density. All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have emerged as a promising next-generation energy storage system, offering the potential to address these issues. By employing nonflammable solid electrolytes and utilizing high-capacity electrode materials, ASSBs have demonstrated improved safety and energy density. Automotive and energy storage industries, in particular, have recognized the significance of advancing ASSB technology. Although the use of Li metal as ASSB anode is promising due to its high theoretical capacity and the expectation that Li dendrites will not form in solid electrolytes, persistent problems with Li dendrite formation during cycling remain. Therefore, the exploration of novel high-performance anode materials for ASSBs is highly important. Recent research has focused extensively on alloy-based anodes for ASSBs, owing to their advantages of no dendrite formation and high-energy density. This study provides a comprehensive review of the latest advancements and challenges associated with alloy-based anodes for ASSBs.

  • Development of advanced Li-ion battery cells with high durability is critical for safe operation, especially in applications to electric vehicles and portable electronic devices. Understanding fundamental mechanism on the formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, which plays a substantial role in the electrochemical stability of the Li-ion battery, in a cathode was rarely reported unlike in an anode. Using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab-initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulations we demonstrate atomic-level process on the generation of the SEI layer at the interface of a carbonate-based electrolyte and a spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ cathode. To accomplish the object we calculate the energy band alignment between the work function of the cathode and frontier orbitals of the electrolyte. We figure out that a proton abstraction from the carbonate-based electrolyte is a critical step for the initiation of an SEI layer formation. Our results can provide a design concept for stable Li-ion batteries by optimizing electrolytes to form proper SEI layers.

  • High nickel layered oxide cathodes are gaining increasing attention for lithium-ion batteries due to their higher energy density and lower cost compared to LiCoO2. However, they suffer from the formation of residual lithium on the surface in the form of LiOH and Li2CO3 on exposure to ambient air. The residual lithium causes notorious issues, such as slurry gelation during electrode preparation and gas evolution during cell cycling. In this review, we investigate the residual lithium issues through its impact on cathode slurry instability based on deformed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) as well as its formation and reduction mechanism in terms of inherently off-stoichiometric synthesis of high nickel cathodes. Additionally, new analysis method with anhydrous methanol was introduced to exclude Li+/H+ exchange effect during sample preparation with distilled water. We hope that this review would contribute to encouraging the academic efforts to consider practical aspects and mitigation in global high-energy-density lithium-ion battery manufacturers.

  • 리튬이온 이차전지는 리튬이온이 이동하면서 전기화학적 충방전사이클을 완성하는 에너지변환장치를 의미한다. 리튬이온 이차전지는 높은 에너지밀도와 낮은 자가방전률, 상대적으로 긴 수명주기 등 다양한 장점을 갖는다. 최근 전기차 수요증가는 고용량 리튬이온 이차전지 개발을 촉진하고 있으나 음극에서의 dendrite 형성으로 인한 전기적 단락 현상과 전지 폭발 문제와 같은 심각한 안전문제를 야기한다. 또한, 리튬이온 이차전지 구동시 상승된 온도에서 폴리올레핀계열(예 : 폴리에틸렌과 폴리프로필렌) 격리막의 열수축 문제가 발생한다. 이와 같이 낮은 열 안정성은 리튬이온 이차전지의 성능과 수명의 감소로 이어진다. 본 연구에서는 폴리올레핀계열 함침격리막 제조를 위한 중요한 소재로서 술폰화 폴리아릴렌에테르술폰 랜덤 공중합체를 사용하였으며, 제조된 격리막을 이용하여 dendrite 형성과 관련된 금속이온 흡착 능력과 리튬이온전도성, 열적 내구성이 평가되었다.

마그네슘열환원법을 이용한 실리콘-탄소 복합재 제조 및 리튬이차전지 음극재로의 이용 (Preparation of Silicon-Carbon Composite via Magnesiothermic Reduction Method and Its Application to the Anode Material for Lithium Ion Battery)

  • Silicon-carbon composite was prepared by the magnesiothermic reduction of mesoporous silica and subsequent impregnation with a carbon precursor. This was applied for use as an anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Well-ordered mesoporous silica(SBA-15) was employed as a starting material for the mesoporous silicon, and sucrose was used as a carbon source. It was found that complete removal of by-products ($Mg_2Si$ and $Mg_2SiO_4$) formed by side reactions of silica and magnesium during the magnesiothermic reduction, was a crucial factor for successful formation of mesoporous silicon. Successful formation of the silicon-carbon composite was well confirmed by appropriate characterization tools (e.g., $N_2$ adsorption-desorption, small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analyses). A lithium-ion battery was fabricated using the prepared silicon-carbon composite as the anode, and lithium foil as the counter-electrode. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the silicon-carbon composite showed better cycling stability than graphite, when used as the anode in the lithium-ion battery. This improvement could be due to the fact that carbon efficiently suppressed the change in volume of the silicon material caused by the charge-discharge cycle. This indicates that silicon-carbon composite, prepared via the magnesiothermic reduction and impregnation methods, could be an efficient anode material for lithium ion batteries.

  • This paper proposes a new secondary battery charger/discharger available for zero voltage discharge which is used for test equipments and formation. The proposed system is able to discharge the battery to zero voltage which does not matter to voltage drop of circuit. The validity of proposed system is verified by experiment.

  • The carbon electrode was modified through manganese-catalyzed hydrogenation method for high energy density vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). During the catalytic hydrogenation, the manganese oxide deposited at the surface of the carbon electrode stimulated the conversion reaction from carbon to methane gas. This reaction causes the penetration of the manganese and excavates a number of cavities at electrode surface, which increases the electrochemical activity by inducing additional electrochemically active site. The formation of the porous surface was confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Finally, the electrochemical performance test of the electrode with the porous surface showed lower polarization and high reversibility in the cathodic reaction compared to the conventional electrode.

Effects of Corrosion Inhibitor on Corrosion of Al-based Alloys in Ethylene Glycol-Water Coolant Environment

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as a corrosion inhibitor on the pitting corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys used in electric vehicle battery cooling systems within a mixture of ethylene glycol and water (EG-W) coolant. Potentiodynamic polarization testing revealed unstable passive film formation on the aluminum alloys in the absence of SDBS. However, the addition of SDBS resulted in a robust passive film, enhancing the pitting corrosion resistance across all examined alloys. Pitting corrosion was predominantly observed near intermetallic compounds in the presence of Cl? ions, which was attributed to galvanic interactions. Among tested alloys, A1040 demonstrated superior resistance due to its lower areal fraction of precipitates and donor density. The incorporation of SDBS inhibitors mitigated the overall pitting corrosion process by hindering Cl? ion penetration. These findings suggest that SDBS can significantly improve pitting corrosion resistance in aluminum alloys employed in battery coolant environments.

Fabrication of Carbon Microcapsules Containing Silicon Nanoparticles-Carbon Nanotubes Nanocomposite for Anode in Lithium Ion Battery

  • Carbon microcapsules containing silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs)-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposite (Si-CNT@C) have been fabricated by a two step polymerization method. Silicon nanoparticles-carbon nanotubes (Si-CNT) nanohybrids were prepared with a wet-type beadsmill method. A polymer, which is easily removable by a thermal treatment (intermediate polymer) was polymerized on the outer surfaces of Si-CNT nanocomposites. Subsequently, another polymer, which can be carbonized by thermal heating (carbon precursor polymer) was incorporated onto the surfaces of pre-existing polymer layer. In this way, polymer precursor spheres containing Si-CNT nanohybrids were produced using a two step polymerization. The intermediate polymer must disappear during carbonization resulting in the formation of an internal free space. The carbon precursor polymer should transform to carbon shell to encapsulate remaining Si-CNT nanocomposites. Therefore, hollow carbon microcapsules containing Si-CNT nanocomposites could be obtained (Si-CNT@C). The successful fabrication was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These final materials were employed for anode performance improvement in lithium ion battery. The cyclic performances of these Si-CNT@C microcapsules were measured with a lithium battery half cell tests.

  • 리튬이온 제조공정에서 전해질 주입 후 반드시 거쳐야 하는 숙성공정은 일반적으로 별로 중요하게 다루어 지지 않고 있다. 왜냐하면 전지 숙성공정이 전지성능에 영향을 주는 인자에 대하여 그다지 깊이 있게 연구가 되어있지 않기 때문이다. 하지만 숙성공정 중에 나타나는 OCV 변화는 전해질 내에 포함되어 있는 성분이 전극으로 전기화학적 흡착되어 나타나는 현상으로 SEI 피막 형성에 매우 중요한 역할을 하게 된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 숙성기간 중에 변하게 되는 OCV와 SEI피막의 관계, 그리고 전지성능과의 연계에 대하여 깊이 있게 논의하고자 한다.
