  • The grid-connected energy storage systems, which could increase the reliability, efficiency, and cleanliness of the grid is presently restricted by the high cost of batteries. This problems could be solved by batteries retired from automotive services. These batteries can provide a low-cost system for energy storage and other applications such as residential applications and renewable energy integration. This paper gives an overview of technical requirements for the re-use of the electric vehicle batteries in energy storage systems.Firstly, the motivation of research is introduced. Secondly, the technologies needed for the re-use of the battery are introduced such asidentification of the battery characteristics, grading of the aged batteries, identification of the state-of-charge and state-of-health of the battery and suitable power electronic converter topologies. In addition the control strategy to maximize the battery lifespan and bypass the faulty batteries is presented and one-stop solution to implement the above mentioned technologies are also given.

  • In this study, the simultaneous use of a multi-level converter (MLC) as a DC-motor drive and as an active battery cell balancer is investigated. MLCs allow each battery cell in a battery pack to be independently switched on and off, thereby enabling the potential non-uniform use of battery cells. By exploiting this property and the brake regeneration phases in the drive cycle, MLCs can balance both the state of charge (SoC) and temperature differences between cells, which are two known causes of battery wear, even without reciprocating the coolant flow inside the pack. The optimal control policy (OP) that considers both battery pack temperature and SoC dynamics is studied in detail based on the assumption that information on the state of each cell, the schedule of reciprocating air flow and the future driving profile are perfectly known. Results show that OP provides significant reductions in temperature and in SoC deviations compared with the uniform use of all cells even with uni-directional coolant flow. Thus, reciprocating coolant flow is a redundant function for a MLC-based cell balancer. A specific contribution of this paper is the derivation of a state-space electro-thermal model of a battery submodule for both uni-directional and reciprocating coolant flows under the switching action of MLC, resulting in OP being derived by the solution of a convex optimization problem.

  • A microgrid as a small scale power system is operated by the grid-connected mode and islanded mode. It is anticipated that the battery energy storage system (BESS) is able to be applied to the microgrid for stable power control, such as tie-line and smoothing control in the grid-connected mode and voltage and frequency control in the islanded mode. In this paper, a digital signal processor (DSP), Two BESS controllers based on TMS320F28335 of a microgrid are implemented and are tested to show control performance in the hardware-in-the loop simulation (HILS) system.

  • Bimodal Tram developed by KRRI is driven by a series Hybrid propulsion system which has both the CNG engine, generator and LPB(Lithium Polymer Battery) pack. It has three driving modes; Hybrid mode, Engine mode and Battery mode. Even in case of Battery mode, LPB pack to get enough power to drive the vehicle only by itself onsists of 168 LPB cells(80Ah per lcell), 650V. It is important thing to manage LPB pack in a right way, which will extend the lifetime of LPB cells and operate in the hybrid mode effectively. This paper has shown the development of battery management system(12 BMS, 1 BMS per 14cells) to manage LPB pack which is connected with CAN(Controller Area Network) each other and measure the voltage, current, temperature and also control the cooling fan inside of LPB pack. Using the measured data, BMS can show the SOC(State of Charge), SOH(State of Health) and other status of LPB pack including of the cell balancing.

  • Within the project 'e performance' supported by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) an electric vehicle, powered by two lithium-ion battery packs of different capacity and voltage has been developed. The required Energy Management System (EMS) in this system controls the current flows of both packs independently by means of two individual dc-dc converters. It acts as an intermediary between energy storage (battery management systems-BMS) and the drivetrain controller on the vehicle control unit (VCU) as well as the on-board charger. This paper describes the most important tasks of the EMS and its interfaces to the BMS and the VCU. To validate the algorithms before integrating them into the vehicle prototype, a detailed Matlab / Simulink-model was created in the project. Test procedures and results from the simulation as well as experiences and comparisons from the real car are presented at the end.

  • High-power lithium batteries are suitable for equipment with high power output needs, such as for ESS's initial start-up. However, their management cost is increased by the installation of air-conditioning to minimize the risk of explosion due to internal temperature rise and also by a restriction on the number of charge/discharge cycles. High-capacity flow batteries, on the other hand, have many advantages. They can be used for over 20 years due to their low management costs, resulting from no risk of explosion and a high number of charge/discharge cycles. In this paper, we propose an ESS based on hybrid batteries that uses a lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO) at the initial startup and a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) from the end of the transient period, with a bi-directional PCS to operate two batteries with different DC voltage levels and using an efficient energy management control algorithm.

  • Depending on the college graduation project and graduation thesis regulations for the certification and graduation requirements, the quadcopter acting as a Li-Po battery that charges by solar energy are proposed a design method and improvements in theory. Quadcopter posture is balanced and confirmed by the position sensor, through a PID (Proportional Integral Differential) control. Battery switching circuit is composed of two Li-Po battery. Driving the quadcopter as one battery, and does not use other battery is charged by solar energy. A battery switching circuit is fabricated in a manner that uses two types of relays. Even if completely not charged to the battery is being driven a certain switch by the battery charging voltage from time to time, it proposes a method for increasing the endurance time and range.

  • Photovoltaic is an attractive technology to remote power applications, because of its reliability, low maintenance, and zero fuel requirements. In this paper represents residential PV system based on BESS(battery energy storage system) for managing the electric power, a pattern of daily operation considering the load characteristics of the house, the generation characteristics of PV power, and utility power leveling. For apply to control algorithm, we consider the load on monthly power consumption trend and daily usage pattern. As for the control of the proposed system, to increase the conversion efficiency of the PV power, bidirectional converter is used for MPPT and SPWM inverter. An experimental system is implemented, and some experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

  • This paper describes a design of several ship's emergency lighting system(SELS) that power factor is improved and power is controlled extensively, and techniques to control and monitor this system in remote distance by PC serial communication. The remote monitoring control system is composed of emergency power supply system (EPSS), half bridge(HB)inverter, fluorescent lamp(FL), microprocessor, multi communication interface. EPSS checks the voltage of the emergency backup battery in real time. In case that the voltage of 13[V] or less has been detected for 5[msec] or longer for 3 times in a row, charger circuit is connected for battery charging. Experimental works using proposed system confirm that speedy and stable power to be supplied when main power source cut-off, compared with conventional analog type, and input power up to 35.0[%] by adjusting of pulse frequency of the HB inverter.

  • To improve the drawback of LCMPPT(Limit Cycle Maximum Power Point Tracking) controller of the existing two power conversion stages, an advanced MPPT scheme of single power conversion stage is proposed in this paper. This topology is faster on the control speed by means of current control method and the system configuration is simpler. The Authors produce a battery charger by using a cost effective one-chip processor (PIC16F877A) and evaluate another application on the basis of simulation. As a result, the proposed new LCMPPT algorithm is confirmed to be stable and useful.
