  • The performance of Li-ion system based on $LiCoO_2$ and Graphite is well optimized for the 3C applications. The charge-discharge mode, the manufacturing process, the cell performance and the thermal reactions affecting safety has been explained in the engineering point of view. The energy density of the current LIB system is in the range of 300~400 Wh/l. In order to achieve the energy density higher than 500 Wh/l, the active materials should be modified or changed. Adopting new high capacity anode materials would be effective to improve energy density.

  • Li ion battery (LIB) is one of the most remarkable energy storage devices currently available in various applications. With a growing demand for high-performance batteries, the role of electrochemical analysis for batteries, especially, electrode reactions are becoming very important and crucial. Among various analytical methods, cyclic voltammetry (CV) is very versatile and widely used in many fields of electrochemistry. Through CV, it is possible to know electrochemical factors affecting the reaction voltage and reversibility, and furthermore, quantitative analysis on Li+ diffusivity as well as intercalation and capacitive reactions, and also anionic redox reaction. However, the explanation or interpretation of the results of CV is often deficient or controversial. In this mini-review, we briefly introduce the principle of cyclic voltammetry and its applications in LIB to bring a better understanding of the electrochemical reaction mechanisms involved in LIB.

  • Non-volatile counter is a counter that maintains the value without external power supply. It has been used for the applications related to warranty issues to count and record certain events such as power cycles, operating time, hard resets, and timeouts. It has been conventionally implemented with volatile memory-based counter and battery backup or non-volatile memory such as EEPROM. Both of them have a lifetime issue due to the limited lifetime of the battery and the endurance of the non-volatile memory cells, which incurs significant redundancy in design. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid architecture of volatile (SRAM) and non-volatile memory (EEPROM) cells to achieve required lifetime of the non-volatile counter with smaller cost. We conduct a design space exploration of the proposed hybrid architecture with the parameters of various kinds of non-volatile memories. The analysis result shows that the proposed hybrid non-volatile counter can extend the lifetime up to 6 times compared to the battery-backup volatile memory-based implementation.

  • Although the use of batteries is rapidly increasing worldwide to improve carbon neutrality and energy efficiency, performance degradation due to the increase in the number of uses is inevitable as it is a finite resource that can be applied according to capacity and specifications. Deterioration and failure of batteries are recognized as important problems in various applications using batteries, including electric vehicles. In order to solve these problems, a diagnostic technology capable of accurately predicting battery life and grasping state information is required, but it is difficult in a non-linear form due to internal structure or chemical change. In this paper, the factors that generally cause battery performance change are directly applied to check whether there are external changes and impedance changes in the battery, and to analyze whether they affect battery life. Impedance change trends and result values were confirmed using a universal impedance spectroscopy method and a self-developed internal impedance measurement method. The results did not significantly affect the impedance change trend. It was confirmed that the increase in the number of times of battery use was prominent in the impedance change trend.

  • Recently, the small scale photovoltaic (PV) electronic devices are drawing attention as the upcoming PV generation system. The PV system is commonly used in small scale PV applications such as LED lighting and cell phone. This paper proposes photovoltaic output sensorless (POS) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for a small scale charging system of PV-nickel metal hydride battery using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) controller. A converter is connected to a small scale PV cell and battery, and performs the POS MPPT at the battery terminal current instead of being at the PV cell output voltage and current. The FPGA controller and converter operate based on POS MPPT method. The experimental results show that the nickel metal hydride battery is charged by the maximum PV output power.

  • In this paper, a three-port bidirectional modular circuit applied in charging and discharging equalization for lithium-ion battery strings is proposed. This circuit consists of four MOSFETs and one transformer which provide a simple structure to be easily modularized. Compared to conventional individual cell equalization schemes, it utilizes the transformer as the energy transfer element, allowing direct transfer of energy between arbitrary two cells of three-cell battery module, thus improving the equalization efficiency significantly by using much less number of equalizers for long battery strings. Simulation results are presented to validate the circuit operation and confirm its capability to equalize the three-cell battery module.

  • Lithium-Ion batteries have become the best tradeoff between energy, power density and cost of the energy storage system in many portable high electric power applications. In order to manage the battery efficiently State of Charge (SOC) of the battery needs to be estimated accurately. In this paper a model-based approach to estimate the SOC of the Lithium-Ion battery based on the estimation of the battery impedance is proposed. The validity and feasibility of the proposed algorithm is verified by the experimental results.

  • Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and battery charging control are two important functions for a solar battery charger. The former improves utilization of the available solar energy, while the latter ensures a prolonged battery life. Nevertheless, complete implementation of both functions can be complex and costly, especially for low voltage application such as standalone street lamps. In this paper, the operation of a solar battery charger for standalone street light systems is investigated. Using only one voltage sensor, the solar charger is able to operate in both MPPT and constant voltage (CV) charging mode, hence providing high performance at a low cost. Using a lab prototype and a solar simulator, the operation of the charger system is demonstrated and its performance under varying irradiance is validated.
