  • The main purpose of this study is to determine bifurcation as the primary instability of a glass melting furnace. Steady-state and unsteady characteristics of natural convection in the partially open cavity as appeared in a glass melting furnace is investigated by using numerical analysis. Three types of convection, such as steady laminar, unsteady periodic or unsteady quasi-periodic convection may occur according to the temperature difference between upper two isothermal surfaces along the depth of cavity in a glass melting furnace. In the temperature difference of 150-900 K between batch and free surface, the larger the temperature difference, the weaker the convection strength and unsteadiness. Since the glass viscosity is increasing exponentially in the lower temperature, the batch freezes the thermofluidic field especially below the surface of it. If the depth of cavity is 0.5 m, the bifurcation to time-dependent natural convection may occur in the range of 60-650 K. If that is 1.0 m, it may occur in the whole range of temperature difference.

  • As demand for various kinds and small lot products has been increasing, batch annealing has been appreciated for its small restiction for the opteration. The cold spot of the coil is very important in the BAF(Batch annealing furnace) annealing process. Because of the annealing cycle time in the BAF, annealing was decided on the cold spot of the coil. So, we tested the effect, variation of cold spot, for hydrogen contents of atmospheric gas at the annealing furnace. As a result of several investigations. We confirmed the following characteristics ; after the heating and soaking, the cold spot of coil moved to 1/3 of coil thickness in the NHx atmospheric gas, but the mid point of the coil thickness is the cold spot in the Ax or .H/sub2. atmospheric gas. Therefore, the use of hydrogen instead of nitrogen as the protective gas, combined with high convection in batch annealing furnaces, has shown that considerable increases in furnace output and material quality are attainable. Owing to the low density, high diffusion and reducing character of hydrogen, a better transfer resulting in uniform material temperatures and improved coil surfaces can be achieved.

  • Optimization of process variables, including oxygen and water partial pressure and also an nesting temperature, was performed in batch-type process to fabricate YBCO films on LaAlO3 single crystal. In this work, YBCO oxide powder was used as a starting precursor for metal-organic deposition(MOD)method. The precursor films were fabricated in batch furnace and they were converted to the epitaxial YBCO films at the same furnace with varying the process variables. The oxygen partial pressure was varied from 100ppm to 2000ppm and the water partial pressure from 1.2% to 12.2%. The window for optimal P(O2) was narrow about 700ppm for batch-type process. YBCO films in bathc-thype MOD process were optimized at 740-770oC and P(H2O) of 2.3%-7.3%.

  • The temperature of the wafer batch in the furnace was calculated and its visualized temperature field was analyzed. The main heat transfer mechanisms from the heater wall to the wafers were radiation and conduction, and the finite difference method was used to analyze the complex heat transfer including those two mechanisms. The visualized temperature field shows that the direction of the heat flux in the wafer batch varies during the heating process, and the heat in the wafer batch diffuses faster by conduction within the wafer than by radiation between the wafers, in the condition of the constant temperature at the heater wall and cap.

  • A complete spectrum of risk assessment including qualitative and quantitative approaches were performed for the POSCO's Batch Annealing Furnace (BAF) gas systems. The purpose of BAF is to enhance the quality of steel by annealing it with either hydrogen/nitrogen mixture gas or pure hydrogen gas. Number of gas leak scenarios were identified to generate frequency of their occurrences. With the hypothetical accident scenarios given, fire/explosion impact studies were performed to estimate magnitude of significant consequences. Several different indices were also presented from which practical safety improvement action items could be established.

  • The formability of an automobile body panel is very important. So, we performed an annealing condition change for the development of annealing condition with temperature, atmospheric gas and the annealing cycle. Formability was changed under the influenced of the mechanical properties of steel sheet for the automobile body panel. Therefore, ot os important in the BAF(Batch annealing furnace) annealing process. Because mechanical properties were decided on the heat treatment method of the coil. So, we tested the development of mechanical properties according to the heat treatment method at the annealing furnace using the Ax atmospheric gas and the HNx atmospheric gas. As a result of several investigations, we confirmed the following characteristics ; mechanical properties change under the influence of the annealing cycle and atmospheric gas.

Because of the heat treatment method in the BAF, mechanical properties was decided on the heat treatment method of the coil. So, we tested on the development of mechanical properties according to heat treatment method at the annealing furnace using the Ax(H$_2$75%, $N_2$25%) atmospheric gas and the HNx(H$_2$4%, $N_2$96%) atmospheric gas. As a result of several investigations. We confirmed the following characteristics ; mechanical properties was changed under the influence of the annealing cycle, the heat treatment method and the atmospheric gas. And, elongation in the HNx BAF was better than the Ax BAF. Finally, most important thing in the BAF is using of proper annealing cycle in order to get a good quality.

  • Permeable reactive barrier has been recognized as the one of representative methods for remediation of contaminated groundwater. Reactive barrier system containing two and more reactive materials can remove multiple contaminants such as nutritive salts and heavy metals. In this study, removal efficiency of multiple contaminants was evaluated when both zeolite and basic oxygen furnace slag were used as reactive materials. Sequential batch test which consists of two materials was performed to evaluate removal efficiency comparing the reaction order of them against nutritive slats including ammonium and phosphate and heavy metal including cadmium. As a result, zeolite-basic oxygen furnace slag sequence batch test showed the best efficiency for removal of multiple contaminants including nutritive salts and heavy metal.
