A heuristic model which determines the scheduling of serial flowshops with minimization of the makespan is proposed for an idealized batch chemical plant. It generates an initial sequence by heuristic reasoning and improves it recursively until no improvement is possible. The heuristic reasoning is based on Johnson's Rule which gives the sequence with the minimum makespan for a two-unit flowshop. The evolutionary step searches the neighborhood of the current sequence for sequences with lower makespan. The robustness of this model is also examined by comparing the minimum makespan of literature examples with the theoretical one.

The object of this study is to compare properties of massive fly-ash concrete with plain concrete. Two concrete mixtures comprising two batch each $1.0m^3$ in volume, were made from ready mixed concrete batch plant. The water-to-cementitious materials ratio was kept constant at 51.4%. Therefore, massive concrete specimen($W800{\times}D800{\times}H800mm$) was cast from ready mixed concrete to analyze history of temperature and core strength properties. Bleeding, time of slump loss and time of setting of the fresh concrete were measured. In order to estimate the properties of massive fly-ash concrete in hardened concrete, non-destructive tests such as rebound hardness, ultrasonic pulse velocity and maturity were performed and analyzed.
Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of electron donor on reductive dechlorination of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol by a methanogenic consortium. The methanogenic consortium was obtained from the anaerobic digester of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The batch reactor containing methanogenic consortium was spiked with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol at 10 mg/$\ell$. Acetate, ethanol, glucose of methanol, each was added as an electron donor for methanogenic consortium. During the course of the experiments liquid samples were taken from the batch reactor to measure dechlorination rate and find the dechlorination pathway of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. After incubation 2,4,6-trichlorophenol was first dechlorinated to 2,4-dichlorophenol and then to 4-chlorophenol. Phenol was not detected in the batch reactor the highest rate of dechlorination of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol was observed when ethanol was used as an electron donor.

A pilot plant scale freeze dryer was designed and manufactured and its performance was tested. Freezing capacity of water vapor in the developed freeze dryer was 8㎏/batch and heating and defrosting methods were conduction and hot gas types, respectively. And exhausting time of vacuum pump was 7-8 minutes and temperature of cold trap was kept below $-50^{\circ}C$. In the freeze drying of fruits and vegetables, its optimum and maximum drying capacities were 2 and 4㎏/batch, respectively. Performance of the new freeze dryer was compared quite well with a foreign made freeze dryer.
Monazite is a phosphate mineral that contains thorium (Th) and rare earth elements. The Th concentration in monazite can be as high as 500 ppm, and it has the potential to be used as fuel in the nuclear power system. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct the techno-economic analysis (TEA) of Th extraction in the form of thorium oxide (ThO2) from monazite. Th can be extracted from monazite through an alkaline fusion method. The TEA of ThO2 production studied parameters, including raw materials, equipment costs, total plant direct and indirect costs, and direct fixed capital cost. These parameters were calculated for the production of 0.5, 1, and 10 ton ThO2 per batch. The TEA study revealed that the highest production cost was ascribed to installed equipment. Furthermore, the highest return on investment (ROI) of 21.92% was achieved for extraction of 1 ton/batch of ThO2, with a payback time of 4.56 years. With further increase in ThO2 production to 10 ton/batch, the ROI was decreased to 5.37%. This is mainly due to a significant increase in the total capital investment with increasing ThO2 production scale. The minimum unit production cost was achieved for 1 ton ThO2/batch equal to 335.79 $/Kg ThO2.

The purpose of this study is to find analytic solution of determining the optimal capacity (lot-size) of multiproduct acyclic multistage production and inventory system to meet the finished product demand under the constraint of finite intermediate storage. Intermediate storage is a practical way to mitigate the material flow imbalance through the line of supply and demand chain. However, the cost of constructing and operating storage facilities is becoming substantial because of increasing land value, environmental and safety concern. Therefore, reasonable decision-making about the capacity of processes and storage units is an important subject for industries. The industrial solution for this subject is to use the classical economic lot sizing method, EOQ/EPQ(Economic Order Quantity/Economic Production Quantity) model, incorporated with practical experience. But EOQ/EPQ model is not suitable for the chemical plant design with highly interlinked processes and storage units because it is developed based on single product and single stage. This study overcomes the limitation of the classical lot sizing method. The superstructure of the plant consists of the network of serially and/or parallelly interlinked non-continuous processes and storage units. The processes transform a set of feedstock materials into another set of products with constant conversion factors. A novel production and inventory analysis method, PSW(Periodic Square Wave) model, is applied to describe the detail material flows among equipments. The objective function of this study is minimizing the total cost composed of setup and inventory holding cost. The advantage of PSW model comes from the fact that the model provides a set of simple analytic solutions in spite of realistic description of the material flows between processes and storage units. the resulting simple analytic solution can greatly enhance the proper and quick investment decision for the preliminary plant design problem confronted with economic situation.
In plant tissues intercellular cementing portion called as middle lamella consists of high proportion of protopectin that is water insoluble form of pectin on their backbone Protopectinase (PPase) a heterogeneous group of enzymes that hydrolyze or dissolve the insoluble protopectin in plant tissues by restricted depolymerization liberates water solu- ble pectin with the resultant separation of plant tissues that have been protected against environmental shock by rigid cel wall . Bacillus subtilis EKll was most effective for PPase Production For increasing of PPase productivity effects of glucose concentrations, pHs and aeration rates were studied in batch culture The most proper concentra- tion of glucose pH and air condition for PPase Production were 1% 8.0 and lvvm respectively In these condi- tion PPase productivity was $84,364 UL^{-1}$$h^{-1}$ and increased about 15.6 times than flask fermentation.

Decontamination wastewater generated from the HyBRID decontamination process of the primary system in a nuclear power plant contains impurities such as sulfate ions, metal ions containing radioactive nuclides, and hydrazine (carcinogenic agent). For this reason, it is necessary to develop a technology to remove these impurities from the wastewater to a safe level. In this study, it has been conducted to remove the impurities using a decontamination wastewater surrogate, and a treatment process of the HyBRID decontamination wastewater has been established. The performance and applicability of the treatment process have been verified through 1 L scale of replicates and a pilot scale (300 L/batch) test.
Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) can be classified as a type of self-immobilized microbial aggregates measuring more than 0.2 mm. It offers the option to simultaneously remove COD, N, and P that occur in different zones inside a granule. Also, AGS is characterized by high precipitability, treatability with high organic loading, and high tolerance to low temperature. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor inoculated with AGS (AGS-SBR) is a new advanced wastewater treatment process that was proven to grow AGS with integrated nutrient removal and low C/N ratio. A pilot plant, AGS-SBR with a capacity of 225 ㎥/d was installed at an S sewage treatment plant in Gyeonggi-do. The results of the operation showed that the water quality of the effluent indicated that the value of BOD5 was 1.5 mg/L, CODMn was 11.4 mg/L, SS was 6.2 mg/L, T-N was 13.2 mg/L, and T-P was 0.197 mg/L, and all of these values reliably satisfied an effluent standard (I Area). In winter, the T-N treatment efficiency at a lower temperature of less than 11℃ also showed reliability to meet the effluent standard of the I Area (20 mg/L or less). Analysis of microbial community in AGS showed a higher preponderance of beneficial microorganisms involved in denitrification and phosphorus accumulation compared with activated sludge. The power consumption and sludge disposal cost were reduced by 34.7% and 54.9%, respectively, compared to the domestic SBR type sewage treatment plant with a processing capacity of 1,000 ㎥/d or less.

One of the biggest problems encountered during the last phase of silkworm rearing is non-uniform maturation of the silkworms especially during cooler months. Phytoecdysteroid (20-hydroxy ecdysone) was extracted in large-scale from a plant belongs to Caryophyllaceae and fed to silkworm larvae to test the effect of phytoecdysteroid. About 80% of the silkworms were ready for mounting by 18 hrs after treatment (when the treatment is done for uniform spinning), whereas in control batch only 37% worms were ready for mounting by the same time.
