  • Many sewage treatment plants have applied the advanced technology of chemical coagulant system to remove phosporus in Korea. However there are some problems for the injection of optimum coagulant dosage. In order to solve these problems, the research related to the more cost-effective automatic total phosphorus coagulation control system using an EC(Electrical Conductivity) have been in progress. This study was conducted by the same process and operation method as the Lab-scale for public small town sewage treatment plant. First, it confirmed the correlation among the EC, PO4-P and coagulant dosage in the Lab-scale MSBR(Membrane Sequencing Batch Reactor) process. Next, it analyzed that correlation coefficient of EC and the coagulant dosage was 0.92 in the Full-scale MSBR process. As a result, not only T-P removal efficiency was doubled but also it satisfied the effluent water quality standard in a stable manner. In addition, by applying the automatic control system using the EC, compared to the fixed coagulant injection system the coagulant dosage could be reduced by 28%.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effective analysis of flexural performance for polypropylene fiber (PF) reinforced EVA concrete that can be used in marine bridge, tunnel and agricultural structures under flexural load. The control design was applied in ready mixed concrete using 10 % fly ash of total binder weight used in batch plant. On the basis of the control mix design, there was designed mix types that contained PF ranged from 0 % to 0.5 % by volume ratio into two mix types of using 0 % and 5.0 % EVA contents of total binder weight. Before evaluating the flexural performance, we tested compressive strength and flexural strength to evaluate whether polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete could be used or not in site. The method of flexural performance evaluation was applied by ASTM C 1609. These results showed the maximum compressive strength and flexural strength was measured at each E5P1 and E5P2. Concrete reinforced with PF exhibited deflection-softening behavior. In the concrete reinforced with 0.4 % PF contents and containing 5.0 % EVA, the flexural performance was the best.

  • Gibberellic acid (GA$_3$) is a commercially important plant growth hormone, which is gaining much more attention all over the world due to its effective use in agriculture and brewing industry. Industrially it is produced by submerged fermentation technique using Ascomycetous fungus Gibberella fujikuroi. Solid state and immobilized cell fermentation techniques had also been developed as an alternative to obtain higher yield of GA$_3$. This review summarizes the problems of GA$_3$ fermentation such as production of co-secondary metabolites along with GA$_3$, substrate inhibition and degradation of GA$_3$ to biologically inert compound gibberellenic acid, which limits the yield of GA$_3$ in the fermentation medium. These problems can be overcome by various bioprocessing strategies e.g. two - stage and fed batch cultivation processes. Further research on bioreactor operation strategies such as continuous and / or extractive fermentation with or without cell recycle / retention system need to be investigated for improvement in yield and productivity. Down stream processing for GA$_3$ isolation is also a challenge and procedures available for the same have been critically evaluated.

  • Urease activity of Helicobacter pylori was most strongly inhibited by extract of Mume Fructus among ethanol (70%, v/v) extract of 6 herbal materials selected from our previous work, database on traditional herbal materials, and literature data on Korean plant resources. Active compounds in the extract of Mume Fructus were separated by batch extraction, and further purified by chromatography in a silica gel column and an octadecyl silica gel column using solvents of different polarity. By NMR analysis of the last chromatographic fraction we identified ursolic acid as the active compound of urease inhibition. The result suggests that this component in Mume Fructus can possibly be used for the eradication of H. pylori.

  • Recent studies have revealed the poisonous nature of aluminum(III) species to aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Therefore, this investigation aims to develop batch adsorption experiments in the laboratory, aiming to the removal of aluminum(III) from aqueous solutions onto powdered activated carbon (PAC). The latter (which is an effective and inexpensive sorbent) was prepared from olive stones generated as plant wastes and modified with an aqueous modifying oxidizing agent, viz. $HNO_3$. The main parameters (i.e. initial solution pH, sorbent and $Al^{3+}$ ions concentrations, stirring times and temperature) influencing the sorption process were examined. The results obtained revealed that the sorption of $Al^{3+}$ ions onto PAC is endothermic in nature and follows first-order kinetics. The adsorption data were well described by the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) adsorption models over the concentration range studied. Under the optimum experimental conditions employed, the removal of ca. 100% $Al^{3+}$ ions in the concentration range $1.35-2.75\;mg{\cdot}l^{-1}$ was attained. Moreover, the procedure was successfully applied to the recovery of aluminum spiked to some environmental water samples with an RSD (%), does not exceed 1.22%.

  • In the field of plant maintenance, data that are gathered by sensors on multiple machines are handled and analyzed. Online or pseudo online data handling is required on such fields. When the data occurrence speed exceeds the data handling speed, multiple data should be handled at a time (batch data handling or pseudo online data handling). If l amount of data are received at one time following N amount of data, how to estimate the new parameters effectively is a great concern. A new simplified calculation method, which calculates the N data's weights, is introduced. Numerical examples show that this new method has a fairly god estimation accuracy and the calculation time is less than 1/10 compared with the case when the whole data are re-calculated. Even under the restriction calculation ability in the apparatus is limited, this proposed method makes the failure detection of equipments possible in early stages with a few new coming data. This method would be applicable in many data handling fields.

  • Coagulation/precipitation process has been widely used for the removal of phosphate within domestic wastewater. Although Fe and Al are typical coagulants used for phosphate removal, these have some shortages such as color problem and low sedimentation velocity. In this study, both Fe and Al were used to overcome the shortages caused by using single one, and anionic polymer coagulant was additionally used to enhance sedimentation velocity of the precipitate formed. Batch experiments using a jar test were conducted with real wastewater, which was an effluent of the second sedimentation tank in domestic wastewater treatment plant. Response Surface Methodology was used to examine the responsibility of each parameter on phosphate removal as well as to optimize the dosage of the three coagulants. Economic analysis was also done on the basis of selling prices of the coagulants in the field. Phosphate removal efficiency of Fe(III) was 30% higher than those of Fe(II). Considering chemical price, optimum dosage for achieving residual phosphate concentration below 0.2 mg/L were determined to be 18.14 mg/L of Fe(III), 2.60 mg/L of Al, and 1.64 mg/L of polymer coagulant.

  • Hemicellulose extract obtained by pre-pulping extraction of woodchips, is very diluted acidic in nature. The major component responsible for this weak acidity is acetic acid, present in levels up to 5~10 g/L. Here, we report an exploratory study on the extract upgrading by reactive solvent extraction of acetic acid as well as ASPEN simulation. In this study, liquid-liquid equilibria for the ternary systems (water + acetic acid + ethyl acetate) were measured at the temperature of 298.15 K and 10 (pH = 2.02), 5 (pH = 2.17), and 1 (pH = 2.48) percent of acetic acid samples were used to carry out liquid-liquid extraction studies using ethyl acetate. In a one-stage batch experiment, 96.0% of acetic acid could be extracted for the solvent when the ratio of organic-to-aqueous phases is 4:1. For simulation results, they were used to estimate the interaction parameters between each of the three compounds of the systems studied for the NRTL and UNIQUAC models. The estimated interaction parameters were successfully used to predict the equilibrium compositions by the two models.
