  • Linear regression technique has been used widely in water resources field as well as various fields such as economics and statistics, and so on. Using fuzzy regression technique, it is possible to quantify uncertainty and reflect them to the regression model. In this study, fuzzy regression model is developed to compute design floods in any place in Pyeongchang River basin. In ungaged basins, it is usually difficult to obtain data required for flood discharge analysis. In this study, basin characteristics elements are analyzed spatially using GIS and the technique of estimating design flood in ungaged mountainous basin is studied based on the result. Fuzzy regression technique is applied to Pyeongchang River basin which has mountainous basin characteristics and well collected rainfall and runoff data through IHP test basin project. Fuzzy design flood estimation equations are developed using the basin characteristics elements for Pyeongchang River basin. The suitability of developed fuzzy equations are examined by comparing the results with design floods computed in 9 locations along the river. Using regional regression method and fuzzy regression analysis, the uncertainties of the design floods occurred from the data monitoring can be quantified.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this experiment was to illuminate the relationship between the phosphorus removal rate of unit operation and the phosphorus removal rate of phosphorus volume loading in the Ferrous Nutrient Removal process, which consists of an anoxic basin, oxic basin, and iron precipitation apparatus. Methods: This study was conducted in order to improve the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in domestic wastewater using the FNR (Ferrous Nutrient Removal) process which features an iron precipitation reactor in anoxic and oxic basins. The average concentration of TN and TP was analyzed in a pilot plant ($50m^3/day$). Results: The removal rate of T-N and T-P were 66.5% and 92.8%, respectively. The $NH_3-N$ concentration of effluent was 2.62 mg/l with nitrification in the oxic basin even though the influent was 17.7 mg/l. The $NO_3$-N concentration of effluent was 5.83 mg/l through nitrification in oxic basin even though the influent and anoxic basin were 0.82 mg/l and 1.00 mg/l, respectively. The specific nitrification of the oxic basin ($mg.NH_3$-Nremoved/gMLVSSd) was 16.5 and specific de-nitrification ($mg.NO_3$-Nremoved/gMLVSSd) was 90.8. The T-P removal rate was higher in the oxic basin as T-P of influent was consumed at a rate of 56.3% in the anoxic basin but at 90.3% in the oxic basin. The TP removal rate (mg.TP/g.MLSS.d) ranged from 2.01 to 4.67 (3.06) as the volume loading of T-P was increased, Conclusions: The test results showed that the electrolysis of iron is an effective method of phosphorus removal. Regardless of the temperature and organic matter content of the influent, the quality of phosphorus in the treated water was both relatively stable and high due to the high removal efficiency. Nitrogen removal efficiency was 66.5% because organic matter from the influent serves as a carbon source in the anoxic basin.

  • The recent frequent heavy rainfall has caused an increased in soil erosion and the soil drain which drained soil has caused decreased in channel radius and environmental problems by turbidity. In this study, the optimum size of the sediment basin was tested with soil erosion estimated from the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) in the basin using by GIS data. The results show that the estimated soil erosion and the designed soil deposit are $72.1\;m^3$ and $85.0\;m^3$ respectively and the size of sediment basin is proper. In this study the water depth was calculated from the Hec-Ras model to test the stability of the bank and to prove submersion of the inside fields from stream overflow.

  • This paper presents the empirical formulas for determining the design-width for medium rivers in the Han river basin. The design flood, the watershed ares, and the channel slope of 216 medium rivers in the Han river basin are collected. the design width formulas are then determined by 1) the least squares (LS) method, 2)the least median squares (LMS) method, and 3) the reweighted least squares method based on the LMS (RLS). The six types of formulas are considered to determine the acceptable type for medium streams in the Han river basin. The root mean squared errors (RMSE), the absolute mean (AME) errors, and the mean errors (ME) are computed to test the formulas derived by three regression methods. It si found that the equation related stream width to the watershed area and the channel slope is acceptable for determining the design width for medium streams in the Han river basin. It is expected that the equations proposed by this study be used an index for determining the design-width for medium streams in the Han river basin.

  • Generally the estimation of effective rainfall is important in the rainfall-runoff analysis. So, we must pay attention to selecting more accurate effective rainfall estimation method. Although there are many effective rainfall estimation methods, the NRCS method is widely used for the estimation of effective rainfall in the ungaged basin. However, the NRCS method was developed based on the characteristics of the river basin in USA. So, it may have problems to use the NRSC method in Korea without its verification. In the NRCS method, the antecedent precipitation of 5-day is usually used for the estimation of effective rainfall. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the suitable antecedent precipitation day in Korea river basin through the case study. This study performs the rainfall-runoff simulation for the Tanbu river basin by HEC-HMS model under the condition of varying the antecedent precipitation day from 1-day to 7-day and performs goodness of fit test by Monte Carlo simulation method. The antecedent precipitation of 2-day shows the most preferable result in the analysis. This result indicates that the NRCS method should be applied with caution according to the characteristics of the river basin.

  • Hydrology-based topographical informations generated by GIS techniques could be changed according to the selection of base map, algorithm of extraction, and so on. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the variation of SCS CN extracted by GIS technique and to propose the effective strategy for applying GIS to the rainfall-runoff simulation in ungaged basin. For experimental implementation, GIS spatial data, such as reconnaissance soil map, detailed interpretative soil map, landuse planning map and remotely sensed data(Landsat TM), were collected and generated to calculate the amount of effective rainfall in Pyungchang river basin. In applying SCS Runoff Curve Number to the test basin, the hydrological attribute data were analyzed. In addition, the characteristics of runoff responses according to the selection of GIS spatial data for SCS CN were reviewed. This study shows the applicability of GIS techniques to runoff simulation in ungaged basin by comparing with the measured flood hydrograph. It has been found that the detained interpretative soil map and remote sensing data are appropriate for calculating of SCS CN.

  • Recently, many research works on the icebreaking vessels have been published as the possibility of passing Arctic routes has been increasing. The model ship test on the pack ice model in the ice basin is actively carried out as a way to investigate the performance of icebreaking vessels. In this test, the concentration of pack ice is important since it directly affects the performance. However, it is difficult to measure the concentration because not only the pack ice has uneven shape but also it keeps floating around in the basin. In this paper, an algorithm to identify the concentration of pack ice is introduced. From a digital image of pack ice obtained in the ice basin, the goal is to measure the area of pack ice using an image processing technique. Instead of the general global binarization that yields numerical errors in this problem, a local binarization technique, coupled with image subdivision based on the quadtree structure, is developed. The concentration results obtained by the developed algorithm are compared with the manually measured data to prove its accuracy.

  • The Kunsan basin is a pull-apart basin which was formed during Tertiary. The pre-Tertiary section consists of various rock types, such as meta-sediments, igneous rocks, carbonates, clastics, and volcanics. Tertiary sections are the main targets for the petroleum exploration. In order to determine the optimum processing parameters of the basin, about 12 kinds of test processings were performed. The first main steps for the quality control is to determine the noisy or bad traces by examining the near trace section and shot gathers. The true amplitude recovery was applied to account for the amplitude losses due to spherical divergence and inelastic attenuation. Source designature and predictive deconvolution test were conducted to determine the optimum wavelet parameters and to remove the multiples. Velocity analysis was performed at 1km intervals. The optimum mute function was picked by locating the range of offsets which gives the best stacking response for any particular reflections. Post-stack deconvolution was tested to see if the quality of stacked data improved. The stacked data was migrated using a finite difference algorithm. The migration velocity was obtained from the stacking velocities using the time varying percentages. The AGC sections were provided for the structural interpretation. The RAP sections were used for DHI analysis and for the detection of volcanics.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the possibility of sedimentation basin omission when installed hybrid membrane filtration process in the field plant with the capacity of $500m^3/day$ for 11 months in the "G", water purification plant in Seoul. In order to evaluate the possibility of the sedimentation basin omission, we measured the change of DOC by coagulant dosage. Dosage of PAC(power activated carbon) 4mg/L and coagulant($AI_2O_3$ 10%) 1.67mg/L were compatible to meet the water quality. Also according to the experiment without settlement process, optimization G values were determined to be 300/s, 64/s, and 32/s at the mixing tank, the first flocculator and the second flocculator, respectively. The test was performed under the conditions PAC-coagulation-no settlement-MF. As a result, a dosage of 4.0mg/L as PAC and 0.86 to 1.22mg/L as $Al_2O_3$(10%) in the condition of flux of 62.5LMH were determined to keep TMP value less than $1.0kg_f/cm^2$.

  • This paper describes an investigation how to carry out model tests of deepwater moorings exceeding the basin depth range. A hybrid mooring model, a combination of mooring lines scaled model and a couple of linear springs, is taken into account as an equivalent substitute of a full depth mooring system. Such an idea is applied to the model test of an OTEC mooring system to be installed in 1000m deep ocean. A 1/25 scaled model test of surface vessel and the upper part of mooring system is performed at ocean engineering basin. Possibility and limitation of the hybrid mooring modeling is discussed.
