An increase in population initiating rapid industrialization was found to consequently increase the effluents and domestic wastewater into the aquatic ecosystem. In this research the potentialities of Sambucus nigra L. (SNL) plant in the remediation of water, contaminated with methylene blue (MB), a basic dye were investigated. SNL was chemically impregnated with $KHCO_3$. Operating variables studied were pH, amount of adsorbent and contact time. In general, pH did not have any significant effect on colour removal and the highest adsorption capacity was obtained in 0.035 g MB/g-activated carbon. The Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms. The adsorption isotherm data were fitted to the Temkin isotherm. The mass transfer property of the sorption process was studied using Lagergren pseudo-first-order and chemisorption pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The sorption process obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The surface area, pores volume and diameter were assessed by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda methods. The results were compared to those from activated carbon (Merck) and an actual sample. The results indicate that SNL can be employed as a natural and eco-friendly adsorbent material for the removal of dye MB from aqueous solutions.
The relationship between the morphology of nanostructured TiO$_2$ films and the photo-injected electron transport has been investigated using intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS). For this purpose, three different TiO$_2$ films with 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness are prepared: The rutile TiO$_2$ film with 500 nm-sized cluster-like spherical bundles composed of the individual needles (Tl), the rutile TiO$_2$ film made up of non-oriented, homogeneously distributed rod-shaped particles having a dimension of approximately 20${\times}$80 nm (T2), and the anatase TiO$_2$ film with 20 nm-sized spherically shaped particles (T3). Cross sectional scanning electron micrographs show that all of the TiO$_2$films have a quite different particle packing density: poorly packed Tl film, loosely packed T2 film and densely packed T3 film. The electron transport is found to be significantly influenced by film morphology. The effective electron diffusion coefficient D$_{eff}$ derived from the IMPS time constant is an order of magnitude lower for T2 than for T3, but the D$_{eff}$ for the Tl sample is much lower than T2. These differences in the rate of electron transport are ascribed to differences in the extent of interparticle connectivity associated with the particle packing density.ity.
The simulated dyes solution containing Basic Red 46(BR 46), Yellow 21(Y 21), and Maxilon Blue 30(MB 30) were electrochemically oxidized using carbon fiber as an anode. The electrolyses were performed in a electrolytic flow cell constructed by Vycor glass tube. The carbon fiber was positioned in the inside of Vycor glass tube and platinum wire coiled around outside of tube as a cathode. Several operating variables, such as current, time, pH and flow rate of solution were studied. Increasing current density would lead to a corresponding increase in the dye removal efficiency 99.2 % at a 200 mA. The electrolyses time could also improve and removal efficiency was about 99 % after 1.5 hours of electrolyses. The removal efficiency was increased with the increase of flow rate of solution and optimum flow rate was 5 mL/min. THe pHs of solution affect the removal efficiency. The removal efficiency was decreased with the increase of pH of solution and optimum pH was 5.05 (0.1 M $KNO_3$).

The mesoporous TiO2 film for the dye-sensitized solar cell was prepared by the spin coating using nano particle $TiO_2$ slurry. In order to obtain the good dispersion of nano size $TiO_2$ particles in slurry, the pH of solvent, the sort and quantity of solvent additive and the quantity of surfactant were adjusted. The experimental range of pH was $2\;{\sim}\;4$. The basic solvent for slurry was dilute $HNO_3$ and the solvent additives were ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and butylene glycol. The degree of particle dispersion was indirectly estimated by the viscosity of slurry and the microstructure after sintering. As results, the lower the pH of solvent was the lower the viscosity of the slurry became. The addition of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol to dilute $HNO_3$ brought about the lowering of viscosity and the enhancement of stability in slurry. The addition of surfactant lowered the viscosity of slurry. It was possible to obtain the homogeneous and uniformly dispersed mesoporous TiO2 film using the dilute HNO3 solvent of pH 2 with the addition of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and neutral surfactant.
The absorption spectra and the dissociation constants of various sulfophthaleins have been measured in the presence of a cationic surfactant. In the presence of 2.0 ${\times}$ 10-3 M zephiramine and an ionic strength of 0.05 at 25${\pm}1^{\circ}C$ the absorption maxima of the basic forms are shifted to red by 6${\sim}$21 nm and their molar absorptivities are increased, while the absorption maxima of the yellow forms are shifted to blue by 4${\sim}$20 nm and their molar absorptivities are decreased. The decreases in pKa values are of the order of ranging -1.38${\sim}$0.37. The characteristic of the observed changes has been explained by the assumption that the dye molecule adsorbed on micellar surface forms a stable coplanar structure easily and then the conjugation in the dye molecule is elevated.
$NanoTiO_2$ was synthesized by ultrasonication assisted sol-gel process and subjected to iron doping and carbon-iron codoping. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by XRD, HR-SEM, EDX, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and BET specific surface area analysis. The average crystallite size of pure $TiO_2$ was in the range of 30 - 33 nm, and that of Fe-$TiO_2$ and C-Fe $TiO_2$ was in the range of 7 - 13 nm respectively. The specific surface area of the iron doped and carbon-iron codoped nanoparticles was around $105m^2/g$ and $91m^2/g$ respectively. The coupled semiconductor photo-Fenton's activity of the synthesized catalysts was evaluated by the degradation of a cationic dye (C.I. Basic blue 9) and an anionic dye (C.I. Acid orange 52) with concurrent investigation on the operating variables such as pH, catalyst dosage, oxidant concentration and initial pollutant concentration. The most efficient C-Fe codoped catalyst was found to effectively destruct synthetic dyes and potentially treat real textile effluent achieving 93.4% of COD removal under minimal solar intensity (35-40 kiloLUX). This reveals the practical applicability of the process for the treatment of real wastewater in both high and low insolation regimes.

A new dyed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film dosimeter based on 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MMT) tetrazolium dye is proposed in this study for measuring high gamma radiation dose. Gamma cell irradiator that contains Co-60 gamma-ray source was used to expose the novel MMT-PVA films to different doses up to 25 kGy. The changed in optical property of irradiated and unirradiated films were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results show that the dose sensitive and the linear range of irradiated films were increased considerably with increase of MMT concentration from 1 to 5 mM. The dose response of dyed PVA film changed substantially with changing relative humidity (12-74%) as well as irradiation temperature (10-40 ℃). The absorbance of the unirradiated films does not change up to 10 days in dark while a significant increase in their absorbance was reported for similar films under fluorescent light. The irradiated dosimeters that kept in dark showed a perfect stability for 54 days. It was found that no obvious impact of dose rate on the irradiated MMT-PVA film dosimeters.
The present research was undertaken to investigate the activity of ligninolytic enzymes and the decolorization capability of some dyes with Irpex zonatus BN2, isolated from nature and identified. For the assay of enzyme activities, the isolate did not produce lignin peroxidase (LiP) and veratryl alcohol oxidase (VAO), but laccase and manganese dependent peroxidase (MnP). While the activity for MnP was low $(61.6\;nmol/mg{\cdot}protein)$, its laccase activity was very high $(1185.9\;nmol/mg{\cdot}protein)$. Moreover, laccase had appeared earlier than MnP. When the isolate was incubated with each dye for 10 days, the decolorization rates of azo dyes, such as orange II, orange G, tropaeolin O and congo red were 98.0%, 97.4%, 99.0% and 95.3%, respectively. In case of heterocyclic dyes, eosin Y, toludine blue, methyl blue and azur B were 97.4 %, 98.7%, 99.9% and 94.0% respectively. Finally the results of triphenylmethane dye such as basic fuchsin, malachite green and crystal violet were 98.5%, 95.7% and 99.4%, respectively. The results suggest that laccase of Irpex zonatus BN2 should be played an important role in the decolorization of the dyes.

Two different dyes containing the same molecular weight but different chemical structure have been utilized for the study of thermodynamic parameters. In this study, {3-(4-(diethylamino)phenyl)-3-(1-ethyl-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)isobenzofuran-1(3H)-one} (Blue 502) and {3-(4-(diethylamino)-2-methylphenyl)-3-(1,2-dimethyl-1H-indol-3-yl)isobenzofuran-1(3H)-one} (Blue 402) were used. It has been performed by measuring UV spectra of the two dyes. In general, the blue shift has been observed from both dyes in higher carbon number alcohol solvents. Interestingly, Blue 502 showed higher stability than Blue 402 in the same conditions used in this study. And, the equilibrium constants (0.9~1.0) of the dyes depending upon temperature change were also calculated using UV absorbance. The standard enthalpy calculated from equilibrium constants and molar absorptivity($\varepsilon$) are 10.94 kJ/mol in Blue 402 and 9.010 kJ/mol in Blue 502, respectively.

In this study, we evaluated the efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cell, through an analysis of the amount of energy and solar radiation according to the season. Solar array was installed next to a greenhouse in Gyeongsang National University (Latitude : N $35^{\circ}$ 9' 9.20", Longitude : E $128^{\circ}$ 5' 44.90", Altitude : 52 m), over a period of four months between August 2012 and February 2013, and solar radiation and generated electrical energy was measured and compared. The values was the greatest in October, showing that the vertical solar radiation on panel area was about 1,013.03MJ and the amount of generated power was about 4.87 kWh. The lowest values were obtained in November, showing that the vertical solar radiation on the panel area was about 755.25MJ and the amount of generated power was about 3.34 kWh. The average efficiency values were 3.12% in August, 2.60% in October, 2.39% in November, and 2.23% in February, respectively. Results of the study would be used as basic data when applying dye-sensitized solar cells to greenhouses in the future.
