Fisheries in Geray Reservoir could be managed using biometric and reproductive characteristics of the Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L. 1758)

  • This study looked at some biometric and reproductive aspects of the Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) - the overexploited fish species in the Geray Reservoir as a foundation to develop an efficient fisheries management strategy. 50 fish samples (20 to 44 cm and 130 to 2,400 g) were collected between October and May 2022 using a cast net with a mesh size of 6 cm. The ratio of male to female C. carpio (1:0.52) was deviating from the anticipated 1:1 ratio. The absolute fecundity of C. carpio was relatively low (12,375 to 31,392 eggs). Gonadosomatic index varied from 0.01 to 4.6 (male) to 0.24-12.75 (female), and the spawning period of C. carpio extended from December to January. The length-weight relationships for males (TW = 0.0009TL3.87) and females (TW = 0.0007L3.97) indicate that C. carpio had positive allometric growth; which may have been caused by unsuitable habitat conditions and overfishing. There is a need to develop fisheries management like implementing integrated conservation efforts and reducing wetland farming. For this, this information provides a baseline data.

Convolutional Neural Networks Using Log Mel-Spectrogram Separation for Audio Event Classification with Unknown Devices

  • Audio event classification refers to the detection and classification of non-verbal signals, such as dog and horn sounds included in audio data, by a computer. Recently, deep neural network technology has been applied to audio event classification, exhibiting higher performance when compared to existing models. Among them, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based training method that receives audio in the form of a spectrogram, which is a two-dimensional image, has been widely used. However, audio event classification has poor performance on test data when it is recorded by a device (unknown device) different from that used to record training data (known device). This is because the frequency range emphasized is different for each device used during recording, and the shapes of the resulting spectrograms generated by known devices and those generated by unknown devices differ. In this study, to improve the performance of the event classification system, a CNN based on the log mel-spectrogram separation technique was applied to the event classification system, and the performance of unknown devices was evaluated. The system can classify 16 types of audio signals. It receives audio data at 0.4-s length, and measures the accuracy of test data generated from unknown devices with a model trained via training data generated from known devices. The experiment showed that the performance compared to the baseline exhibited a relative improvement of up to 37.33%, from 63.63% to 73.33% based on Google Pixel, and from 47.42% to 65.12% based on the LG V50.

A Study on Improvement γ-Reθt Model for Hypersonic Boundary Layer Analysis (극 초음속 경계층 해석을 위한 γ-Reθt모델 개선 연구)

  • Since boundary layer transition has a significant impact on the aero-thermodynamic performance of hypersonic flight vehicles, capability of accurate prediction of transition location is essential for design and performance analysis. In this study, γ-Reθt model is improved to predict transition of hypersonic boundary layers and validated. A coefficient in the production term of the intermittency transport equation that affects the transition onset location is constructed and applied as a function of Mach number, wall temperature, and freestream stagnation temperature based on the similarity numerical solution of compressible boundary layer. To take into account a Mach number dependency of transition onset momentum thickness Reynolds number and transition length, additional correlation equations are determined as function of Mach number and applied to Reθc and Flength correlations of the baseline model. The suggested model is implemented to a commercial CFD code in consideration of practical use. Analysis of hypersonic flat plate and circular cone boundary layers is carried out by using the model for validation purpose. An improvement of prediction capability with respect to variation of Mach number and unit Reynolds number is identified from the comparison with experimental data.

Effects of the Progression Control of Myopia on Myopia Control Lenses and Single Vision Lenses (Myopia Control 렌즈와 Single Vision 렌즈의 근시진행 조절 효과)

  • Purpose: This paper was to study the clinical effects of moderating myopia by comparing the myopia control lens, which was being recently recognized as a method of inhibiting the progression of myopia, with the wearers of single vision lens. Methods: Using 56 subjects between the ages of 8-15 years (112 eyes) with myopia in the areas of City of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk Province as study subjects, refractive error, axial length, near point of convergence and accommodative near point were measured and compared a total of 3 times at the baseline, after 1-month and after 6-months. Results: For refractive error, suppression and mitigation were seen in the progression of spherical equivalent when MC lens was worn, as compared to using SV lens, and, when axial length MC lens was worn, the axial progression was significantly suppressed and delayed (p < 0.05). The near point of convergence became shorter with the use of MC lens, and the amplitude of convergence was improved when MC lens was worn. Accommodative near point became shorter with the use of MC lens, and focus ability was significantly improved (p <0.05). Conclusions: It was shown that MC lens, compared to SV lens, could alleviate myopia progression in school-age children and youth. It is considered that MC lens can be used as a useful therapy for the inhibition of myopia progression in the increasing number of myopic children and adolescents.

Factors Associated with a Prolonged Length of Hospital Stay in Patients with Diabetic Foot: A Single-Center Retrospective Study

  • Background We conducted this study to identify factors that may prolong the length of the hospital stay (LHS) in patients with diabetic foot (DF) in a single-institution setting. Methods In this single-center retrospective study, we evaluated a total of 164 patients with DF, and conducted an intergroup comparison of their baseline demographic and clinical characteristics, including sex, age, duration of diabetes, smoking status, body mass index, underlying comorbidities (e.g., hypertension or diabetic nephropathy), wound characteristics, type of surgery, the total medical cost, white blood cell (WBC) count, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and albumin, protein, glycated hemoglobin, and 7-day mean blood glucose (BG) levels. Results Pearson correlation analysis showed that an LHS of >5 weeks had a significant positive correlation with the severity of the wound (r=0.647), WBC count (r=0.571), CRP levels (r=0.390), DN (r=0.020), and 7-day mean BG levels (r=0.120) (P<0.05). In multiple regression analysis, an LHS of >5 weeks had a significant positive correlation with the severity of the wound (odds ratio [OR]=3.297; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.324-10.483; P=0.020), WBC count (OR=1.423; 95% CI, 0.046.0-356; P=0.000), CRP levels (OR=1.079; 95% CI, 1.015-1.147; P=0.014), albumin levels (OR=0.263; 95% CI, 0.113.3-673; P=0.007), and 7-day mean BG levels (OR=1.018; 95% CI, 1.001-1.035; P=0.020). Conclusions Surgeons should consider the factors associated with a prolonged LHS in the early management of patients with DF. Moreover, this should also be accompanied by a multidisciplinary approach to reducing the LHS.

High-$T_c$ 2nd-order SQUID Gradiometer for Use in Unshielded Environments (비차폐 환경에서의 고온초전도 SQUID 2차 미분기의 특성연구)

  • We have fabricated $∂^2$$B_{z}$ /$∂x^2$ type planar gradiometers and studied their properties in operation under various field conditions. $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$ film was deposited on $SrTiO_3$ (100) substrate by a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) system and patterned into a device by the photolithography with ion milling technique. The device consists of 3 pickup loops designed symmetrically Inner dimension and the width of the square side loops are 3.6 mm and 1.2 mm, respectively, and the corresponding dimensions of the center loop are 2.0 mm and 1.13 mm. The length of baseline gradiometer is 5.8 mm. Step-edge junction width is 3.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the hole size of the SQUID loop is 3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ ${\times}$ 52 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The SQUID inductance is estimated to be 35 pH. The device was formed on a 20 mm ${\times}$ 10 mm substrate. We have tested the behavior of the device in various field conditions. The unshielded gradiometer was stable under extremely hostile conditions on a laboratory bench. Noise level 0.45 pT/$\textrm{cm}^2$/(equation omitted)Hz and 0.84 pT/$\textrm{cm}^2$/(equation omitted)Hz at 1 Hz for the shielded and the unshielded cases, which correspond to equivalent field noises of 150 fT/(equation omitted)Hz and 280 fT/(equation omitted)Hz, respectively. In spite of the short baseline of 5.8 mm, the high common-mode-rejection-ratio of the gradiometer, $10^3$, allowed us to successfully record magnetocardiogram of a human subject, which demonstrates the feasibility of the design in biomagnetic studies.

Lycopene Content and Fruit Morphology of Red, Pink, Orange, and Yellow Fleshed Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) Germplasm Collections

  • High-quality and high-phytonutrient watermelon fruits have strong market opportunities besides their health related benefits. Hence, investigating quality and nutritional related traits of watermelon genetic resources could provide important baseline data in breeding for increased lycopene content thereby increasing the marketability of watermelon. To this end, we have examined some fruit morphological traits and lycopene content of 105 genetic resources. Seeds, originally obtained from 22+ countries, were obtained from the National Agrobiodiversity Center, Jeonju, South Korea, grown in an experimental field and harvested at a fully mature stage. The size of pistil scar (SPS), the width of stripes (WS), weight of fruit (WF), length of fruit (LF), width of fruit (WIF), the thickness of pericarp (TP), soluble solids content (SSC), fruit shape in longitudinal section, ground color of skin, the intensity of the green color of skin, fruit shape at the apical part, grooving distribution, conspicuousness of stripes, and main color of the flesh were recorded on the field and inside laboratory and the lycopene was measured using spectrophotometric and HPLC methods. Watermelon fruits have shown a diverse morphological characters. Red and pink fleshed fruits dominated in the entire collections. Fruits with higher thickness of rind were found to exhibit less soluble solid content (SSC). Korean origin fruits were characterized by intermediate SSC while the United States of America (USA), Russia (RUS), Tajikistan (TJK), Turkmenistan (TKM), Taiwan (TWN), and Uruguay (URY) originated fruits had the highest SSC. The lycopene content varied between 41.37 and 182.82 ㎍/g, 2.81 and 163.72 ㎍/g, and 3.54 and 255.47 ㎍/g using HPLC, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and microplate reader spectrophotometer, respectively. Red- and pink-fleshed fruits had the highest levels of lycopene content compared to the yellow- and orange-fleshed. Lycopene content had a significant positive correlation with SSC, however, no correlations were detected between lycopene and other quantitative fruit morphological characters. Our study demonstrated high diversity exists in fruit morphological traits and lycopene content of the germplasm collections which provide beneficial baseline data for a future breeding program and utilization of watermelon germplasm collections in gene banks for the maintenance and improvement of the current levels of production, marketability, and health-related benefit of watermelon fruits.

Developmental Characteristics of Ovary and Egg of Migratory Locust, Locusta migratoria (Orthoptera: Acrididae) (풀무치(Locusta migratoria)의 난소 및 알 발육 특성)

  • As a baseline study of (common name) Locusta migratoria (Orthoptera: Acrididae) to utilize as a food source, we investigated the developmental characteristics of ovaries and eggs. Locusta migratoria had a pair of ovaries and more than 90-104 panoistic ovarioles. The ovary length in the adult stage was longer than it is in the 5th nymph stage. The length on the first day of the adult stage was 2.5-fold longer than the first day of 5th instar. The ovary length showed a tendency to increase until the 30th day of the adult phase, but decreased from the 35th day. Ovarioles length was about half of the ovary length, showing a similar tendency to the variation of ovary length. The lengths of the ovaries and the ovarioles increased proportionally to body weight. The matured eggs were identifiable from the 15th day of the adult stage, and the number was the highest on the 30th day at 50.6 individuals. Spermatheca size was also affected by the ovary development. The ovaries of L. migratoria were highly matured until the 30th day of adult stage. Weight and size of eggs increased sharply from the 4th day after egg oviposition and remained from the 7th day after spawning. Based on the above results, we found that the ovary of L. migratoria was most developed on the 30th day of adult phase, and 1st nymph is being hatched on the 10th day of the oviposition.

Implementation of an Algorithm for the Estimation of Range and Direction of an Underwater Vehicle Using MFSK Signals (MFSK를 이용한 잠수정의 거리 및 방향 예측알고리즘 구현)

  • KRISO/KORDI is currently developing a deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) system which is composed of a launcher, an ROV, and an AUV. Two USBL acoustic positioning systems will be used for UUV's navigation. One is for the deep sea positioning of all three vehicles and the other is for AUV's guidance to the docking device on the launcher. In order to increase the position accuracy MFSK(Multiple Frequency Shift Keying) broadband signal will be used. As the first step to the implementation of a USBL system, this paper studies USBL positioning algorithm using MFSK signals. Firstly, the characteristics of MFSK signal is described with various MFSK parameters: number of frequencies, frequency step, center frequency, and pulse length. Time and phase delays between two received signals are estimated by using cross-correlation and cross-spectrum methods. Finally an USBL positioning algorithm is derived by converting the delays to difference of distances and applying trigonometry. The simulation results show that the position accuracy is improved highly when both cross-correlation and cross-spectrum of MFSK signals are used simultaneously.

Calibration Method of Plenoptic Camera using CCD Camera Model (CCD 카메라 모델을 이용한 플렌옵틱 카메라의 캘리브레이션 방법)

  • This paper presents a convenient method to estimate the internal parameters of plenoptic camera using CCD(charge-coupled device) camera model. The images used for plenoptic camera calibration generally use the checkerboard pattern used in CCD camera calibration. Based on the CCD camera model, the determinant of the plenoptic camera model can be derived through the relationship with the plenoptic camera model. We formulate four equations that express the focal length, the principal point, the baseline, and distance between the virtual camera and the object. By performing a nonlinear optimization technique, we solve the equations to estimate the parameters. We compare the estimation results with the actual parameters and evaluate the reprojection error. Experimental results show that the MSE(mean square error) is 0.309 and estimation values are very close to actual values.
