  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between hand grip strength and cardiopulmonary fitness in patients with myocardial infarction. In this retrospective study, 67 patients who experienced myocardial infarction for 10 months were analyzed. Hand grip strength was measured using a handheld dynamometer. Dynapenia was diagnosed based on a dominant hand grip strength of less than 30 kg for males and 20 kg for females. A cardiopulmonary exercise test was performed using a treadmill. Physical activity status was also evaluated. Cardiorespiratory fitness parameters were analyzed using a t-test and a Mann-Whitney test. VO2max, METmax, and exercise time significantly decreased in the dynapenia group compared with the non-dynapenia group. Correlation analysis revealed that dominant handgrip strength was significantly related to cardiorespiratory fitness parameters. Moreover, VO2max, METmax, and exercise time were significantly increased in patients with vigorous activity compared with the sedentary group. These findings indicate that handgrip strength could potentially be used as a marker of cardiorespiratory functions. Accordingly, patients with myocardial infarction should be evaluated for grip strength and physical activity, and we can encourage patients to participate actively in cardiac rehabilitation.

  • This study was to analyze the Physical Activity Therapy Programs (PATPs) in U rban-rural region before and after COVID-19 in order to suggest a way of activating program. The subjects were the 43 PATPs performed in 4 Community Health Centers of Gimcheon, Jeongeup, and Pyeongtaek. The basic data was collected by official documents, expenditure budget, the homepage of the centers, national information disclosure portal, telephone interview, and e-mail with the person in charge of the programs. All the data were classified to the administrative districts, the health-related fitness variables, and the life cycles. The American College Sports Medicine Guidelines were used to evaluate the PATPs. As a results, the number of the PATPs was too small compared to the population of the regions. Also, the PATPs were not considered to the characteristics of participants such as Life-Cycle and regional facilities so on. The organization and management of the PATPs were principally deficient in improving health-related fitness variables. In 2020 as the period of COVID-19 pandemic, the number of programs and participants with face-to-face PATPs was significantlry decreased compared to 2019, while that was increased with non-face-to-face PATPs. In conclusion, PATPs should be increased and operated in accordance with scientific exercise prescription guidelines. Also, the programs should be considered with the proportion and characteristics of Life-Cycle population. Further, the various with non-face-to-face PATPs should be developed and screened with based on scientific data for post-corona virus pandemic. Further, non-face-to-face PATPs programs should include a kind of practical way to promote the individual physical activity.

  • Despite of the vibrant nature of the fitness industry, there has not been a sustained effort to understand the dynamics of the industry, particularly with reference to the quality of services offered in that industry. The purpose of this paper is to present a system based process model of quality in health/fitness services. The characteristics of the organization, the service employees and the client are the inputs into the service encounter where the service is produced (i.e., the throughput). The output is the quality of the service. The extent of quality perceived by both the service provider and the client is said to influence the satisfaction of the respective parties, and subsequent motivation to participate in the production of quality in the service. The model also suggests that physical environment as well as other customers and their behaviors influence customer perception of service quality. The quality of service is enhanced through the quality assurance practices of the organization and the feedback from client. Further, the input, throughput, and output in our model reflect (a) quality of the design of the service delivery system, (b) objective quality of the product, and (c) quality as perceived by client. The specific attributes of the design element (i.e., organization, service employee, and the client) are elaborated upon. It is suggested that the organization can assure quality by seeking feedback from clients and service employees, monitoring the service production phases, and managing inter-customer interactions.

  • The online fitness industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years, overcoming physical constraints of conventional fitness programs. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the trend as social distancing policies were implemented. However, as financial distress of offline gyms worsened, the Korean government implemented the "With-COVID19" policy, which lifted most of the restrictions and regulations on offline gyms, on November 1st, 2021, raising concerns about the loss of drivers for the growth of the online fitness industry. Using regression discontinuity design in time (RDDiT), this study investigates the causal effect of the "With-COVID19" policy on the viewer engagement of online fitness content. Contrary to expectations that viewer engagement would decrease, it increased by 21%. Additionally, subgroup analysis based on opportunity cost reveals heterogeneity, and the high-cost group experienced a greater increase of 32% compared to low-cost group. Based on these findings, the study provides possible mechanisms of the increase, theoretical contributions on using RDDiT in the Information Systems, and practical implications for guidelines on managing online fitness platforms and content in the era of digital transformation.

  • BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic obesity(SO), a condition of the reduction in muscle mass paired with an increased fat mass has been paid attention because of its association with disability in later life. A few evidence, however, has reported the association with these factors. PURPOSE: To explore the association among SO, physical function and fitness in older women. METHOD: 257 older women(age of 74) were recruited from Y city and 7 physical functions and 4 fitness tests were measured. Participants were classified into one of four groups based on their body fat and muscle mass: Normal group (GR-A), high fat(GR-B), sarcopenia(GR-C), and sarcopenic obese(GR-D). GLMand LSD-test were conducted with SPSS 12.0. RESULTS: Chair stand, arm-curl, back-scratch, 2-min steps of GR-A was higher than GR-C and GR-D(p<.05). One-leg stand of GR-A was higher than GR-D(p<.01) and of GR-C was higher than GR-D(p<.01).8ft-TUG of GR-D was lower than GR-A(p<.01). Grip strength, knee extension of GR-A was higher than that of GR-C and GR-D(p<.01) and knee flexion of GR-A was also higher than that of GR-C and GR-D(p<.01). CONCLUSION: Based on our findings, we conclude that SO is significantly associated with lower physical function and fitness in older Korean women, which alarm the risk of frailty induced by SO.
