  • The design concepts using vibration reduction techniques, or structural control, have been proposed recently to protect infrastructure against earthquakes. The magnetorheological(MR) fluid damper is one of the most promising new devices for structural vibration reduction because of its mechanical simplicity, high dynamic range, low power requirement, large force capacity and robustness. In this study, the seismic performance of MR devices are compared with that of NZ systems as an attempt to provide some data for improving seismic design techniques applied to structures. For nonlinear time domain analysis of a base isolation system, a six-story building model is considered as a numerical example. The ground acceleration data of El Centre 1940, Mexico City 1985 and Kobe 1995 earthquakes are used as seismic excitations. The results show that MR damper systems for outperform NZ systems in wide-ranging seismic excitations with respect to intensity and period characteristics.

  • A study of effects of design parameters on the seismic responses of base isolated structure is performed to reduce the seismic responses using a linear tw0-degree of freedom system and a lumped-mass model of a nuclear power p;ant(NPP). From the simplified 2 DOF system the optimal isolation frequency being less than 1/10th of the fundamental frequency of superstructure is obtained, and the isolator damping minimizing the peak acceleration depends on superstructure frequency. From the time history analyses for lumped mass model of NPP the optimal damping is calculated as 40% in containment building and 65% in reactor internal structure. Similar results are obtained in 2 DOF system

  • The extremely halophilic archaebacteriurn Haloarcular sp. EH-1 was isolated from solar salts. Halophages found in Haloarcular sp. EH-1 were isolated from fermented anchovy sauce. Halophages were isolated from fermented anchovy sauce using Haloarcular sp. EH-1 as a host bacterium. The isolated halophage produced 0.5∼l.0 mm in diameter clear plaques. The halophage consists of an symmetrical head, measuring 68 nm in diameter, and a contractile tail, 100 nm long and base plates were observed. Total size of phage DNA genome obtained 20 Kbp and its sequence homology was 52.87% with H. Salinarium.

  • Increasing the volume of traffic on the roads causes social and economical problems such as increasing air-pollution and distribution cost. Prefabricated light weight bridge becomes a possible solution for these problems in the urban area where it is difficult to construct new one or expend the existing road. There are some merits in this kind of bridge. First, the design live and dead loads are minimized by allowing only passenger cars. Second employing prefabrication construction scheme reduces the construction time. Third, there is no need to buy land if the elevation road is placed on the top of existing one. In seismic design of bridges, base isolation has been an effective solution when the bridge has stiff piers and a heavy superstructure. The prefabricated light weight bridge has different dynamic characteristics from the ordinary bridges. In this paper, the applicability of base isolators such as lead rubber bearing and elastomeric bearing, to prefabricated light weight bridge is examined.

  • Seismic response control has always been a grave concern with the damage and collapse of many buildings during the past earthquakes. While there are several existing techniques like base isolation, viscous damper, moment-resisting beam-column connections, tuned mass damper, etc., many of these are succumbing to either of large displacement, near-fault, and long-period earthquakes. Keeping this viewpoint, extensive research on the application of smart materials for seismic response control of buildings was attempted during the last decade. Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) with its unique properties of superelasticity and shape memory effect is one of the smart materials used for seismic control of buildings. In this paper, an exhaustive review has been compiled on the seismic control applications of SMA in buildings. Unique properties of SMA are discussed in detail and different phases of SMA along with crystal characteristics are illustrated. Consequently, various seismic control applications of SMA are discussed in terms of performance and compared with prevalent base isolators, bracings, beam-column connections, and tuned mass damper systems.

  • Using a small mobile wireless network as a supplement to the disaster safety network can be useful for eliminating small radio shadowing areas, reducing traffic overloads in disaster areas, and quickly building a disaster communication network in difficult access areas. Potable base station is needed to build a small mobile wireless network, and the portable base station using TVWS(TV White Space) is effective in terms of utilization of radio frequency resources and construction cost of wireless networks. In this paper, we design and implement a power amplifier for portable base station operating in TVWS. The implemented power amplifier operates at 470 ~ 698MHz. The gain of the implemented amplifier is more than 20.1dB, the input/output return loss is more than 11.4dB, and the isolation is more than 39.9dB when the output is off. The IMD characteristic of the power amplifier has characteristics of 61.0dBc with 18.8dBm output at 470MHz, 59.3dBc wih 18.6dBm output at 550MHz and 56.5dBc with 19.0dBm output at 690MHz. The power amplifier implemented in this paper can be used as a power amplifier for portable base station.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the significant duration of ground motions on responses of base-isolated nuclear power plants (NPPs). Two sets of ground motion records with short duration (SD) and long duration (LD) motions, scaled to match the target response spectrum, are used to perform time-history analyses. The reactor containment building in the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) NPP is numerically modeled using lumped-mass stick elements in SAP2000. Seismic responses of the base-isolated NPP are monitored in forms of lateral displacements, shear forces, floor response spectra of the containment building, and hysteretic energy of the lead rubber bearing (LRB). Fragility curves for different limit states, which are defined based on the shear deformation of the base isolator, are developed. The numerical results reveal that the average seismic responses of base-isolated NPP under SD and LD motion sets were shown to be mostly identical. For PGA larger than 0.4g, the mean deformation of LRB for LD motions was bigger than that for SD ones due to a higher hysteretic energy of LRB produced in LD shakings. Under LD motions, median parameters of fragility functions for three limit states were reduced by 12% to 15% compared to that due to SD motions. This clearly indicates that it is important to select ground motions with both SD and LD proportionally in the seismic evaluation of NPP structures.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the design table for envelope curve analysis of base isolated buildings, which represent the period of base isolated buildings and the lateral displacement of base isolation devices. For the construction of design table, $V_E$ spectrum, which represents the energy, is developed instead of acceleration of seismic hazard. Based on the seismic coefficient of UBC 97, boundary period $T_G$ and maximum velocity response $V_0$ are proposed considering Korea seismic hazard. Using $T_G$ and $V_0$, finally, $V_E$ spectrum is developed for the four types of soil conditions. Base on the $V_E$ spectrum, design table for envelope curve analysis is also developed for soil types.

  • The AASHTO seismic base isolation design approach has been reviewed and modified to fit the nonlinear static analysis procedure for reinforced concrete structures in a simpler way. Such an adaptation may be possible for the fact that the reinforced concrete under development of damage due to earthquake loading keeps softening to result in period shifting toward longer side. The validity of the proposed approach was verified by applying it to the examples presented in the current state-of-the-practice approach.
