A flow modeling method has been developed to analyze the flow in the annular base (rear- facing surface) of a circular engine nacelle flying at subsonic speed but with a supersonic exhaust jet. Real values of exhaust gas properties and temperature at an altitude of 30, 000 feet are employed. Potential flows of the air and gas streams are computed for the flow past a separated wake. Then a viscous jet mixing is superimposed on this inviscid solution. Conserva- tion of mass, momentum and energy for the wake flow field is achieved by multiple iterations with modest computer requirements.

An abrupt increase of duct cross-section is frequently encountered in pressure reducing devices, valves of internal combustion engines and in gas pipelines. Supersonic flow in a rectangular duct passing an abrupt increase of cross-section is studied numerically. The behavior of base pressure of the dead-air region at sudden enlargement of the duct is clarified. This investigation concerns the determination of the base pressure, which is independent of the size of the enlarged part. Several flow patterns are identified with different enlargements according to the ratio between the downstream ambient pressure and the upstream reservoir pressure. Base pressure and the resulting shock-structure are highly depending on the size of duct enlargement. For a given duct, base pressure tends to minimum for a particular pressure ratio. In addition, the locations of secondary separation and reattachment points of the jet plume are found with respect to different duct enlargements.

In many applications like the aircraft or the rockets/missiles, the flow from a nozzle needs to be expanded suddenly in an enlarged duct of larger diameter. The enlarged duct is provided after the nozzle to maximize the thrust created by the flow from the nozzle. When the fluid is suddenly expanded in an enlarged duct, the base pressure is generally lower than the atmospheric pressure, which results in base drag. The objective of this research work is to optimize the length to diameter (L/D) ratio of the enlarged duct using the CFD analysis in the flow field from the supersonic nozzle. The flow from the nozzle drained in an enlarged duct, the thrust, and the base pressure are studied. The Mach numbers for the study were 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5. The nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) of the study were 2, 5 and 8. The L/D ratios of the study were 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Based on the results, it is concluded that the L/D ratio should be increased to an optimum value to reattach the flow to an enlarged duct and to increase the thrust. The supersonic suddenly expanded flow field is wave dominant, and the results cannot be generalized. The optimized L/D ratios for various combinations of flow and geometrical parameters are given in the conclusion section.
A method is presented to estimate the form drag and the base pressure on a triangular cylinder in the presence of blockage effect. The Strouhal number, which is found to increase with the flow constriction experimentally by Ramamurthy & Ng (1973), may be decoupled from the blockage effect when re-defined by using the velocity at flow separation and a theoretical wake width. By incorporating this wake width into the momentum equation by Maskell (1963) for the confined flow, a relationship between the form drag and the base pressure is derived. Independently, the experimental data of surface pressure from Ramamurthy & Lee (1973) are found to be independent of the blockage effect when expressed in terms of a modified pressure coefficient involving the pressure at separation. Using the potential flow model by Parkinson & Jandali (1970) and its subsequent development in Yeung & Parkinson (2000) for the unconfined flow, a linear relation between the pressure at separation and the form drag is formulated. By solving the two equations simultaneously with a specified blockage ratio and an apex angle of the triangular cylinder, the predictions of the drag and the base pressure are in reasonable agreement with experimental data. A new theoretical relationship for the Strouhal number, pressure drag coefficient and base pressure proposed in this study allows the confinement effect to be appropriately taken into consideration. The present approach may be extended to three-dimensional bluff bodies.
A method is developed for the separation of the major base flow in a river hydrograph combining the numerical techniques and the empirical methods. The linearized Boussinesq equation and the storage function are used to obtain the base flow recession. The shape of base flow curve made by the recharge of the groundwater table aquifer resulting from rainfall in determined by the Singh and Stall's graphical method, and the continuous from for the curve is approximated by the multiple and polynomial regression. this procedure was successfully tested for the separation of base flow and the establishment of hydrograph in a natural watershed. It was found that the direct numerical method applied to the homogeneous linear second order ordinary differential equation system is not suited to obtain the recession curve, and the case that the loss is generated in the partially penetrating stream can not be solved by the method of this study.
Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) is applied to an axisymmetric base flow at supersonic mainstream. DES is a hybrid approach to modeling turbulence that combines the best features of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes RANS) and large-eddy simulation (LES) approaches. In the Reynolds-averaged mode, the model is currently based on either the Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) turbulence model. In the large eddy simulation mode, it is based on the Smagorinski subgrid scale model. Accurate predictions of the base flowfield and base pressure are successfully achieved by using the DES methodology with less computational cost than that of pure LES and monotone integrated large-eddy simulation (MILES) approaches. The DES accurately resolves the physics of unsteady turbulent motions, such as shear layer rollup, large-eddy motions in the downstream region, small-eddy motions inside the recirculating region. Comparison of the results shows that it is necessary to resolve approaching boundary layers and free shear-layer velocity profiles from the base edge correctly for the accurate prediction of base flows. The consideration of an empirical constant CDES for a compressible flow analysis may suggest that the optimal value of empirical constant CDES may be larger in the flows with strong compressibility than in incompressible flows.

The influences of acute respiratory and metabolic acid-base disturbances on the carotid, renal and coronary blood flow were measured in dogs. Respiratory acidosis was induced by artificial respiration with 8% CO2 -02 gas mixture and respiratory alkalosis was induced by hyperventilation under the control of respirator. Metabolic acidosis and metabolic alkalosis were induced by intravenous infusion of 0.3N hydrochloric acid and 0.6M sodium bicarbonate solution. To observe the effect of hyperkalemia, isotonic potassium chloride solution was infused. CVI electromagnetic flowmeter probes were placed on the left common carotid artery, left renal artery and left circumflex coronary artery. Each flow was recorded on polygraph. 1. The carotid blood flow showed rapid showed rapid and marked increase in acute respiratory acidosis. Even in the cases when arterial blood pressure was lowered during the state of respiratory acidosis, carotid blood flow increased. By the infusion of hydrochloric acid, carotid blood flow increased slowly and returned to the previous label after discontinuation of the infusion. Carotid blood flow also increased by the infusion of large amount of sodium bicarbonate, but it might be the combined effect of expansion of extracellular fluid and compensatory elevation of carbon dioxide tension. 2.The renal blood flow remained unchanged during the acute acid-base disturbances, suggesting effective autoregulation. Renal blood flow, however, increased very slowly when the infusion of potassium chloride continued for a long period. 3.Although less marked than the carotid blood flow, the coronary blood flow increased in the acute respiratory and metabolic acidosis. In asphyxiated condition, coronary blood flow increased most markedly and this might be the combined effect of hypoxia, hypercapnea, and lowering of pH. In summary, the carotid blowflow showed more marked change in the acute respiratory and metabolic acidosis than the renal and coronary blood flow. Respiratory and metabolic components of acid-base disturbances may influence the local blood flow concomitantly, there being more differences in the individual responses, but respiratory component manifested more rapid and marked effect than metabolic component.
The pressure is generally lower than that of the freestream at the base of a missile body due to the energy loss by the flow separation around the edge of the base. The base pressure changes in the presence of the thrust jet due to the interaction between the base flow of the missile and the jet flow. In this study, behavior of the missile base pressure by the change of the jet exit pressure and the freestream condition is investigated using the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) method. Effects of the grid type and the freestream condition are tested. The results are compared with the semi-empirical predictions and the flight test data. The CFD results agree well with the flight test data. The semi-empirical predictions overestimate the base pressure when jet thrust is strong for low freestream speed.

In this paper, label assignment schemes considering the IP flow model for the efficient MPLS traffic engineering are proposed and evaluated. Based on the IP flow model, the IP flows are classified into transient flows and base flows. Base flows, which last for a long time, transmit data in high bit rate, and be composed of many packets, have good implications for the MPLS traffic engineering, because they usually cause network congestion. To make use of base flows for the MPLS traffic engineering, we propose two base flow classifiers and label assignment schemes where transient flows are allocated to the default LSPs and base flows to explicit LSPs. Proposed schemes are based on the traffic-driven label triggering method combined with a routing tabel. The first base flow classifier uses both flow size in packet counts and routing entries, and the other one, extending the dynamic X/Y flow classifier, is based on a cut-through ratio. Proposed schemes are shown to minimize the number of labels, not degrading the total cut-through ratio.
