  • Effective science-based management of the basin water resources requires an understanding of the characteristics of the streams, such as the baseflow discharge. In this study, the base flow was estimated in the two watersheds with the least artificial factors among the Nakdong River watersheds, as determined using the chemical hydrograph separation technique. The 16-year (2004-2019) discontinuous observed stream flow and electrical conductivity data in the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) monitoring network were extended to continuous daily data using the TANK model and the 7-parameter log-linear model combined with the minimum variance unbiased estimator. The annual base flows at the upper Namgang Dam basin and the upper Nakdong River basin were both analyzed to be about 56% of the total annual flow. The monthly base flow ratio showed a high monthly deviation, as it was found to be higher than 0.9 in the dry season and about 0.46 in the rainy season. This is in line with the prevailing common sense notion that in winter, most of the stream flow is base flow, due to the characteristics of the dry season winter in Korea. It is expected that the chemical-based hydrological separation technique involving TANK and the 7-parameter log-linear models used in this study can help quantify the base flow required for systematic watershed water environment management.

  • In this study the numerical analysis on staging flow with forward ejector is conducted. The forward ejector plays a vital role in staging, which jets out from aftbody. This staging environment needs careful flow analysis for securing staging safety Present study investigates the steady inviscid staging flow phenomena with variation of separation distance. The performance index is forebody base pressure coefficients. The three dominant flow phenomena are observed according to separation distance which could be told as impinging stage, cavity vortex dominancy stage, and pure base flow characteristics stage. Impinging stage shows high thrust for forebody as one might think. However, important point is that cavity vortex dominancy stage can be more favorable for separation than impinging stage as one simply think in certain separation distance.

  • Turbulent flow analysis is conducted around the multi-stage launch vehicle including base region and detachment motion of strap-on boosters due to resultant aerodynamic forces and gravity is simulated. Aerodynamic solution procedure is coupled with rigid body dynamics for the prediction of separation behavior. An overset mesh technique is adopted to achieve maximum efficiency in simulating relative motion of bodies and various turbulence models are implemented on the flow solver to predict the aerodynamic forces accurately. At first, some preliminary studies are conducted to show the importance of base flow for the exact prediction of detachment motion and to find the most suitable turbulence model for the simulation of launch vehicle configurations. And then, developed solver is applied to the simulation of KSR-III, a three-stage sounding rocket researched in Korea. From the analyses, after-body flow field strongly affects the separation motions of strap-on boosters. Negative pitching moment at initial stage is gradually recovered and a strap-on finally results in a safe separation, while fore-body analysis shows collision phenomena between core rocket and booster. And a slight variation of motion is observed from the comparison between inviscid and turbulent analyses. Change of separation trajectory based on viscous effects is just a few percent and therefore, inviscid analysis is sufficient for the simulation of separation motion if the study is focused only on the movement of strap-ons.

  • A method is presented to estimate the form drag and the base pressure on a triangular cylinder in the presence of blockage effect. The Strouhal number, which is found to increase with the flow constriction experimentally by Ramamurthy & Ng (1973), may be decoupled from the blockage effect when re-defined by using the velocity at flow separation and a theoretical wake width. By incorporating this wake width into the momentum equation by Maskell (1963) for the confined flow, a relationship between the form drag and the base pressure is derived. Independently, the experimental data of surface pressure from Ramamurthy & Lee (1973) are found to be independent of the blockage effect when expressed in terms of a modified pressure coefficient involving the pressure at separation. Using the potential flow model by Parkinson & Jandali (1970) and its subsequent development in Yeung & Parkinson (2000) for the unconfined flow, a linear relation between the pressure at separation and the form drag is formulated. By solving the two equations simultaneously with a specified blockage ratio and an apex angle of the triangular cylinder, the predictions of the drag and the base pressure are in reasonable agreement with experimental data. A new theoretical relationship for the Strouhal number, pressure drag coefficient and base pressure proposed in this study allows the confinement effect to be appropriately taken into consideration. The present approach may be extended to three-dimensional bluff bodies.

  • The plume-induced shock wave is a complex phenomenon, consisting of plume-induced boundary layer separation, separated shear layer, multiple shock waves, and their interactions. The knowledge base of plume interference effect on powered missiles and flight vehicles is not yet adequate to get an overall insight of the flow physics. Computational studies are performed to better understand the flow physics of the plume-induced shock and separation particularly at high plume to exit pressure ratio. Test model configurations are a simplified missile model and two rounded and porous afterbodies to simulate moderately and highly underexpanded exhaust plumes at the transonic/supersonic speeds. The result shows that the rounded afterbody and porous wall attached at the missile base can alleviate the plume-induced shock wave phenomenon, and improve the control of the missile body.

  • A numerical analysis has been performed to give an understanding of the physics of a compressible base flow with mass bleed in a Mach 2.47 freestream. Axisymmetric, compressible mass-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are computed using a two-equation turbulence model, standard ${\kappa}-{\omega}$, and a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The mass bleed is characterized by the change in the mass flow rate of the bleed jet non-dimensionalized by the product of the base area and freestream mass flux. The result showing that there is an optimum bleed condition with maximum base pressure, leading to a minimum base drag, is clearly predicted and the validation with experimental data shows reasonable agreement.

  • The Characteristics of dividing the dispersed bubble, plug, and slug steam-water flow in the horizontal junctions with horizontal branches have been experimentally investigated. The experimental investigation of the separation phenomena in a $45^{\circ}$ horizontal wye with equal pipe inner diameter of 25 mm is presented to provide a data base for the development and verification of the analytical models. The phase separation and pressure distribution in the three legs of each test section are obtained through the set of measurements made in the present work. And the dependence of phase separation on different parameters, such as inlet quality and mass flux, is discussed.

  • Experimental studies on drag reduction of a circular cylinder of diameter D were conducted in the subcritical flow regime at Reynolds numbers in the range $4{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}10^5$. To shield the cylinder rear surface from the pressure deficit of the unsteady vortex generation in the near wake, two shield plates were attached downstream of the separation points to form a cavity at the base region. The chord of the shield plates, L, ranged from 0.22 to 1.52 D and the cavity width, G, was in the range from 0 to 0.96 D. It is concluded that significant drag reductions from that of a plain cylinder may be achieved by proper sizing of the shield plates and the base cavity. The study shows that using a pair of shield plates at G/D of 0.86 and angular position ${\theta}$ of ${\pm}121^{\circ}$ results in a configuration with percentage drag reduction of 40% for L/D of 0.5, and 55% for L/D of 1.0.

  • The projectile afterbodies for zero-lift drag reduction has been analyzed using the Navier-Stokes equations with the κ-εturbidence model. The numerical method of a second order upwind scheme has been used on an unstructured adaptive grid system. Base drag reduction methods that have been found effective on axisymmetric bodies are boattailing, base bleed, base combustion, locked vortex afterbodies and multistep afterbodies. In this paper, turbulence flow and pressure charateristics have been studied for geometries of multistep afterbodies. The important geometrical and flow parameters relevant to the design of such afterbodies have been identified by step number, length and height. The flow over multistep aftoerbodies or base have many kinds of compressible flow characteristics including expansion waves at the trailing edge, recompression waves, separation and recirculating flow in the base region, shear flow and wake flow. The numerical results have been compared and analyzed with the experimental data. The flow characteristics have been clearly shown.
