14 kinds of perennial flower sods, including 10 Korean native wild perennial flowers such as Lychnis cognata, Achillea sibirica, Sedum spectabile, Sedum takesimense etc. were made with basal sheets of nonwoven fabric or jute fabric. Growth of plants planted on bark was better than that of planted on soil of open area. The plants planted on bark also showed difference in growth rate by the kinds of used basal sheets. In general, the growth of plants was good when nonwoven fabric was used as basal sheet instead of jute fabric. When jute fabric was used as basal sheet, It was severely decayed during growth period resulting in great decreasing of root sticking capacity to basal sheet. It was shown that the procumbent plants such as Tymus quinquecostatus, Ixeris stolonifera, Sedum oryzifolium, Sedum polystichoides having lower plant height and better ground coverage ability compared with upright plants such as Sedum spectabile and Aster glehni were more suitable for floral sod production.
The defects in a synthesized crystal of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ used as substrate for growing of semi-conductor materials such as GaN were examined by the conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Large Angle CBED and High-Angle Annular Dark Field (HAADF) STEM methods. The dominant defects found in the specimen are basal microtwins with the thickness of ${\sim}2\;to\;32 nm$ and the associated strong strain field at the interface of microtwin/matrix, basal dislocations and complex dislocations in the one of {$2\bar{1}\bar{1}3$} pyramidal slip plane. All these basal and pyramidal dislocations seem to be strong related to basal microtwins. It was also found that the density of defects is very uneven. In the certain area with the dimension of a few fm, the dislocation density is quite high as an order of ${/sim}10^{10}/cm^2, but the average density is roughly estimated to be less than ${\sim}10^5/cm^2, as is usually expected in general synthesized crystals.

Regional distribution and relative frequency of endocrine cells in the pancreas of the red-eared slider, Trachemys scripta elegans, were investigated by immunohistochemical methods. Chromogranin (Cg) A-, serotonin-, insulin-, glucagon-, somatostatin-, bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP)- and human pancreatic polypeptede (HPP)-immunoreactive cells were identified in this study. Most of immunoreactive cells in the exocrine and endocrine pancreas (Langerhans islet) were generally spherical or spindle-shaped (open-typed cell), while occasionally cells round in shape (close-typed cell) were found in the basal portion or interepithelial regions of the pancreatic duct. These immunoreactive cells were located in the exocrine, endocrine pancreas and/or basal or interepithelial portion of the pancreatic duct. Serotonin-immunoreactive cells were found in the basal portion of epithelia of the pancreatic duct at a low frequency and interacinar region of the exocrine at a moderate frequency. Insulin-immunoreactive cells were found in the central portion of the endocrine pancreas, interacinar regions of the exocrine pancreas and basal portion of the epithelia of the pancreatic duct at high, moderate and low frequencies, respectively. Glucagon-immunoreactive cells were detected in the periphery of the endocrine pancreas, interacinar region of the exocrine pancreas and basal portion of the epithelia or interepithelia of the pancreatic duct at high, moderate and moderate frequencies, respectively. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were dispersed in the whole area of the endocrine pancreas, interacinar regions of exocrine pancreas and basal portion of the epithelia or interepithelia of the pancreatic duct at a moderate frequency. BPP- and HPP-immunoreactive cells were detected in the iinteracinar region of the exocrine pancreas at moderate and hige frequencies, respectively. However, no Cg A- and motilin-immunoreactive cells were detected in this study.
This study aimed to provide a strategy for selecting an adequate combination of growth intervals(i.e. times between age $T_1$ and age $T_2$) to be used to improve the reality of the growth equation through obtaining better precision of parameter estimates. Variety of growth functions were fitted to the data and one equation which best fitted the data was chosen for the analysis. A modified Schumacher projection equation, selected as a best equation, that included dummy variables representing locality as a predictor variable was fitted for basal area and height equations with nonoverlapping growth interval and all possible growth interval data sets of Douglas-fir(Pseudotsuga menziesii Mirb.Franco). The data were measured in all parts of the South Island of New Zealand. It was found that the precision of parameter estimates was increased in both basal area and height equations by using data set which contained a range of measurement intervals from short to long term.

Vegetation carbon sequestration and regeneration are the two major parameters of forest research. In this study, we analyzed the vegetation carbon stock and regeneration of community-managed pine plantation of Kathmandu, central Nepal. Vegetation data were collected from 40 circular plots of 10 m radius (for the tree) and 1m radius (for seedling) applying a stratified random sampling and nested quadrat method. The carbon stock was estimated by Chave allometric model and estimated carbon stock was converted into CO2 equivalents. Density-diameter (d-d) curve was also prepared to check the regeneration status and stability of the plantation. A d-d curve indicates the good regeneration status of the forest with a stable population in each size class. Diversity of trees was very low, only two tree species Pinus roxburghii and Eucalyptus citriodora occurred in the sample plots. Pine was the dominant tree in terms of density, basal area, biomass, carbon stock and CO2 stock than the eucalyptus. The basal area, carbon stock and CO2 stock of forest was 33±1.0 ㎡ ha-1, 108±5.0 Mg ha-1 and 394±18 Mg ha-1, respectively. Seedling and tree density of the plantation was 4,965 ha-1 and 339 ha-1 respectively. The forest carbon stock showed a positive relationship with biomass, tree diameter, height and basal area but no relationship with tree density. Canopy cover and tree diameter have a negative effect on seedling density and regeneration. In conclusion, the community forest has a stable population in each size class, sequestering a significant amount of carbon and CO2 emitted from densely populated Kathmandu metro city as the forest biomass hence have a potentiality to mitigate the global climate change.

This study was conducted to find out the growth pattern of Pinus koraiensis plantation over 34 years, focusing on DBH, height, basal area and allometric change. Total increment (TI), mean annual increment (MAI) and correlation coefficient were calculated and compared with stand and dominants. Total increment and mean annual increment of both DBH and height of dominants were bigger than those of stand. The difference was apparently shown bigger in DBH than height. Unlike DBH and height the total increment and mean annual increment of basal area per hectare of dominants were distinctively smaller than those of stand. Furthermore MAI of dominant was increasing until age 42, while MAI of stand increased at early ages and then gradually decreased after culmination like MAIs of DBH and height. MAIs of basal area of dead trees at each measurement tended to increase until early age (18 years in this study), while it reached a peak and gradually decrease after that (21 years in this study). Correlation coefficient between DBH and height tended to decrease as both dominant and stand age and the difference between dominant and stand was not clearly shown over the measurement period. Correlation coefficients between DBH and crown width tended to decrease as the trees age and correlation coefficients of dominant were clearly shown smaller than that of stand. Correlation coefficients of height and crown width also was found to be similar to correlation coefficients between DBH and crown. Meanwhile correlation coefficient of height and crown width dropped more radically than coefficient of DBH and crown width as the trees age.
The objectives of this study were to validate existing growth models of Pinus densiflora and Larix leptolepis grown in Chonbuk regions, and to examine suitability of models to different regions using spatially varied data set. In the valuating model predicted of Pinus densiflora, except to DBH growth model, basal area and height prediction models were biased to fit to different region. And in the valuating predicted height, basal area and DBH model of Larix leptolepis, they were adequate to new data set acquired from different region. Therefore, existing prediction models, except DBH model, of Pinus densiflora have the limitation of practicality that could not be suitable for application to different region. However, owing to high compatibility shown predicted DBH, basal area and height models of Larix leptolepis, they will be adequate to use as the prediction models where data are available around eastern mountain areas of Jeollabukdo.
This study was conducted to develop the growth model for diameter at breast height (DBH) and basal area (BA) of Larix leptolepis stands grown in eastern mountain areas, Jeollabuk-do and to enhance the precision of the models by adding regional and climatal factors, such as altitude, mean annual rainfall, and mean annual temperature. In results, it was analyzed that Schumacher polymorphic equation might be the best model to estimate DBH and BA growth. In case of the DBH growth model, precision was improved by adding altitude and mean annual rainfall. Moreover, in case of the BA growth model, precision was improved by adding mean annual rainfall. Meanwhile, it would be necessary for more precise model to add various factors, such as stand density, mortality, thinning ratio, and edaphic status along with regional and climatal factors.
This study was carried out to estimate the stand volume for Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) by Strand sampling method. The data collected for this study were based on the 380 sample plots from the field survey, which were distributed in the major part of Korea(Kyeongi, Kangweon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Chunbuk and Kyeongbuki), and the plotless sampling instrument such as dendrometer, spiegel relascope and tele-relascope were used. The procedure for this study is summarized briefly as follows : 1. There were not only significant differences between volume estimation by Strand sampling method and that by plot survey method, and the relationship was y=bx, where b approached nearly 1. Therefore, the stand volume of Japanese larch could by estimated by Strand sampling method. 2. The value measured by three different plotless sampling instruments did not showed any significant differences between instruments and observers, density and instruments, and ground slope and instruments. 3. With the stand volume, basal area height showed the highest correlation and stand form height, average height, basal area per ha correlated with the volume in thier orders. 4. The best fitted equation of stand volume estimation with basal area height by relascope was as follow. log V=-0.0375+0.8910 log GH-1.5946 1/GH Stand volume table also was obtained using the above estimeated equation. 5. The relationship between estimated value and actual value was Y=bx, where b was nearly 1. The correlation coefficient was very high and the percentage of estimated error was 4.5%.
The plot design influences the budgets and the precision of forest inventory results. The objective of this study is to determine the efficiency of estimating forest variables such as tree density, basal area, volume, and species richness based on various plot sizes using fixed-area plot sampling in the natural deciduous forest of Pyeong-Chang County, Gang-won Province, Korea. In this study, 108 reference plots were established with a fixed plot size and shape of 0.09 ha ($30m{\times}30m$). In order to determine the optimal plot size for the interest of variables, each sample plot was established using different shapes (square, circle, and rectangle) and was divided into different plot sizes from 100 to $900m^2$. The mean relative difference (MRD) for the sum of the basal area and volume, and tree density per hectare decreased as plot size increased. But the MRD for three variables were only below 13% at the plot size of $500m^2$. Species richness for each reference stand observed ranging from 2 to 15 species, demonstrated highly positive significant relationships with plot size. The minimum plot size for the estimation of tree density, the sum of the BA and volume was determined to be about $400m^2$, whereas the estimation of species richness required a minimum plot size of $500m^2$.
