This study was conducted to investigate effects of fertilization treatments (non-fertilizing, deep-fertilizing 20g, 50g, 100g, and surface-fertilizing 20g) on survival rate, growth performances, and seedling quality index (SQI) of container seedling and bare root seedling of Pinus densiflora in the field. There were no significantly differences in survival rate among fertilization treatments in the field. Besides, there was no toxic effect on seedling by over 100g fertilization in deep-fertilizing treatment. The root collar diameter and height of P. densiflora in both seedling types were the highest at 100g fertilization in deep-fertilizing treatments, and the biomass products and SQI were the same as above growth of root collar diameter and height. In most of the treatments, container seedlings showed better growth performances than bare root seedlings. In optimal fertilization, effect of fertilization was higher in container seedling than bare root seedling.

This present study was conducted to investigate photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll contents, and growth performances of containerized seedling and bare root seedling of Quercus acutissima growing under different fertilizing schemes. Both of containerized seedling and bare root seedling of Quercus acutissima showed good photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in the seedlings applied with one gram refining fertilizer (each of N, P, and K is 19%) diluted in one liter water. And chlorophyll contents also showed higher in the seedlings applied with the above fertilization scheme. The seedlings also showed good relative growth performances of root collar diameter, seedling height, total biomass, and leaf area in the some treatment scheme. In most of the treatments, containerized seedlings showed better photosynthetic capacity, apparent quantum yield, chlorophyll contents, and growth performances than bare root seedlings.

This study was performed in order to explore the growth characteristics by growing stage in the containerized seedling and the bare root seedling of Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. et Zucc., which is the major plantation species of Korean southland. The height growth of 1-year-old bare root seedlings was better than containerized seedlings, which grew in the containers with capacity of 31.2 mL and 300 mL. The root collar diameter growth was the best in the containerized seedlings of container with 300 mL. The 2-year-old bare root seedlings were surveyed to be better in the height and root collar diameter growth than the containerized seedlings of container with 300 mL. In the comparison of dry mass production, it was the highest in 32 mL containerized seedlings as for 1-year-old above ground and in 300 mL containerized seedlings as for below-ground and total dry mass production. In case of 2-year-old seedlings, it was indicated to be high in bare root seedling as for the part above ground and in dry mass production of the containerized seedling as for the part below ground. In the comparison on root morphological traits of seedlings such as the total root length, the root project area, the root surface area, the average diameter in root, and the root volume, all of 1 and 2-year -old containerized seedlings showed the higher growth than the bare root seedlings except the average diameter in root. Synthesizing the results of this experiment, the containerized seedlings are relatively excellent in root development compared to bare root seedlings in the process of producing seedlings of C. obtusa, thereby being judged to have grown into excellent seedlings.

This study was carried out to discover suitable packaging methods during the cold or frozen storage of sawtooth oak and Japanese larch seedlings, which are major afforestation tree species in Korea. The weight loss rate of sawtooth oak was lower under frozen storage at -2℃ (maximum, 33.7%) than under cold storage at 2℃ (maximum, 61.0%). A film liner treatment inside the packaging box effectively suppressed the increase in the weight loss rate. For the sawtooth oak containerized seedlings, when stored at -2℃, the rate of weight loss was 17.9 to 25.4% in the untreated group and less than 1% in the film liner treatment group. Similar results were observed with Japanese larch. After two months of freezing at -2℃, both species maintained a low index of 1.0 - 1.1 with regard to the degree of shoot desiccation of containerized seedlings, and there was no significant difference between the treatments. On the other hand, the chlorine dioxide treatment could more effectively reduce the occurrence of mold and shoot desiccation than a PE single treatment in bare-root seedlings. According to these results, it was concluded that frozen storage is generally suitable as a means of long-term storage compared to cold storage of sawtooth oak and Japanese larch. A chlorine dioxide treatment at 20 ppm was effective for maintaining seedling quality levels during storage, demonstrating the good effect of suppressing the occurrence of shoot desiccation and the occurrence of mold.
Objective of this study was conducted to determine the proper transplanting distance for turf cultivation in the bare land. For investigating the proper transplanting distance of turf cultivation, it were measured the growth characteristics as plant height, root length, number of branching, number of nodule and length of stolon, and yield properties such as fresh weight and dry matter. In $30{\times}30cm$ of transplanting distance plot, plant height, root length, number of branching, number of nodule and length of stolen were 14.1cm, 22.0cm, 7.0, 31 and 77.5cm, and also the fresh weight and dry matter were 16.1 and 11.0g/plant, respectively. It was observed that growth characteristics and yield properties were highest at $30{\times}30cm$ of transplanting distance, respectively. Therefore, it considered that the proper transplanting distance was $30{\times}30cm$ for turf cultivation in the bare soil.
This study was conducted to evaluate optimal storage techniques for bare root plants and container seedlings of Quercus variabilis and Zelkova serrata in order to maintain high quality of seedlings until planting. Refrigerated storage treatments were given at two temperatures (-2℃ [freezing] and 2℃ [cooling]) for nine different durations (0, 15, 30, 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, and 360 days after storage). We analyzed total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) content and measured shoot moisture content (SMC) during the storage stage and survival rate (SR) and dry weight during the planting stage of seedlings. The TNC content and SMC of the seedlings of the two species decreased with an increase in storage duration. The TNC content of seedlings rapidly decreased after 180~240 days of storage. The TNC reduction rate in the freezing treatment was lower than that in the cooling treatment. Also, with an increase in the storage duration of the two species, the SMC reduction rate in the cooling treatment increased in comparison with that in the freezing treatment. In both the species, the SR after planting decreased rapidly after 60 days of cooling storage and 180 days of freezing storage, respectively. The SR after planting was less than 60% when the TNC content for both the species dropped below 20 mg g-1. In addition, the SR was lower than 80% when SMC measured before storage decreased by approximately 30% and 20% for Q. variabilis and Z. serrata, respectively. Our results suggest that cooling (1~2℃) storage is recommended for a short-term period (2 months or less), whereas freezing (-2~-4℃) storage is suitable for longer periods (2~6 months). These optimal storage techniques, allied with seedling harvesting and handling systems, will improve the quality of seedling production in nursery stages and increase seedling growth performances in plantations.

Red sorrel, as one of exotic weeds in Korea, was introduced along with imported cereals for concentrate feed or within the seed for forage production. The plant was dominated in grassland and reduced the quality of forage. In particular, this weed cause severe problem in alpine grassland. This study was carried out to investigate the effect and response of red sorrel and forage crops by foliar and soil applied herbicide application. Mecoprop(MCPP) and pendimethaline were selected by pre-field experiment trials and applied to control the red sorrel in grassland. Herbicidal activity of MCPP was 77.2% at 500$m\ell$/10a level and 82.8% at 750$m\ell$/10a level. However, seeds of red sorrel from bare land formed after foliar applied herbicide treatment were germinated and covered bare land. Pendimethalin was not reduced the rhizome growth grown from red sorrel root but retarded seedling growth of germinated red sorrel. The herbicidal activity of pendimethalin to the red sorrel seedling was 83.0%. 2 times application of MCPP at the rate of 750$m\ell$/10a was effective to control of red sorrel regrown from root and herbicidal activity was 93.2%. MCPP and pendimethaline treatment was not reduced growth of grass and have no herbicidal injury to forage crop seedling. Amount of MCPP and pendimethalin remained in grass plant was decreased from 20 days after herbicide treatment and could not be problem in livestock feeding.

This study was conducted to understand the long-term changes in soil physiochemical properties and seedling growth in Larix kaempferi (larch) stands planted in clear-cut larch and Pinus rigida (pine) forest soils over an 11-year period after reforestation. Two-year-old bare-root larch seedlings were planted in 2009-2010 at a density of 3,000 seedlings ha-1 in clear-cut areas that harvested larch (Chuncheon and Gimcheon) and pine (Wonju and Gapyeong) stands. We analyzed the physiochemical properties of the mineral soils sampled at 0-20 cm soil depths in the planting year, and the 3rd, 7thand 11th years after planting, and we measured seedling height and root collar diameter in those years. We found significant differences in soil silt and clay content, total carbon and nitrogen concentration, available phosphorus, and cation exchangeable capacity between the two stands; however, seedling growth did not differ. The mineral soil was more fertile in Gimcheon than in the other plantations, while early seedling growth was greatest in Gapyeong. The seedling height and diameter at 11 years after planting were largest in Wonju (1,028 tree ha-1) and Chuncheon (1,359 tree ha-1) due to decreases in stand density after tending the young trees. The soil properties in all plantations were similar 11 years after larch planting. In particular, the high sand content and high available phosphorus levels (caused by soil disturbance during clear-cutting and planting) showed marked decreases, potentially due to soil organic matter input and nutrient uptake, respectively. Thus, early reforestation after clear-cutting could limit nutrient leaching and contribute to soil stabilization. These results provide useful information for nutrient management of larch plantations.
The irrigation interval and time for the supply of nutrient and water to the plant is important in the aeroponic system. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of irrigation interval on the growth of Phalaenopsis hybrid seedlings in the aeroponic system. Young bare-root plants (four leaves, 16 g in fresh weight) were used for this experiment. The composition of nutrient solution was, in $me{\cdot}L^{-1}$, 9 N, 3 P, 4 K, 4 Ca and 2 Mg. The electrical conductivity (EC) and pH of nutrient solution used was $1.2\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and 5.8, respectively. Irrigation intervals were 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 minute and each irrigation time was 10 minute. The total fresh and dry weight, the number of branched roots, and relative growth rate at the 20 and 30 min. was greater than 10, 40, 50 min. interval. Especially, the fresh weight of roots at 30 min. interval was the highest. Leaf length was the highest at 30 min. interval but there was no difference in leaf width. The amount of water consumed for a month was 0.71 L per plant and it was reduced with increasing irrigation interval. There was no difference in the amount of consumed mineral contents for 15 days except for potassium. Potassium absorbed was the highest at 30 min. irrigation interval. As a result, the optimum irrigation interval was 30 min for the production of Phalaenopsis hybrid seedlings in the aeroponic system.
This study was carried out to suitable plantation site from comparison and analysis of regional early growth characteristics of planted Larix kaempferi trees in harvested L. kaempferi plantations. Two-year-old bare-root seedlings of L. kaempferi were planted with the density of $3000\;seedlings\;ha^{-1}$ at four sites (Yeongju, Gimcheon, Chuncheon, and Inje). All sites were established with three plots ($400m^2$ per plot) in 2010. We analyzed soil physical and chemical properties in October 2010 and 2013. We measured root collar diameter (RCD) and height of trees in October from 2010 to 2014, and then calculated H/D ratio and stem volume. Soil pH was significantly increased and available P was significantly decreased 3 years after planting. Annual mean RCD, height, and stem volume of 5-to 7-year-old in the Chuncheon site were significantly higher than those in the other sites, however them in the Yeongju site were the lowest. It is related to the fact that total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and organic matter concentrations in the Yeongju site were relatively lower than those in the other sites. As a results of this study, we could confirm the correlation between soil properties of L. kaempferi plantations and growth of L. kaempferi trees. We could suggest values of soil properties for reforestation of L. kaempferi.
