The split Hokinson pressure bar(SHPB) test has been used to find the mechanical property of materials at high strain rate. A tensile split Hopkinson pressure bar test system is developed and the threaded tensile specimen and the split collar are placed between elastic bars. When the compressive elastic wave generated by a striker is transferred from the transmit bar to the incident bar, some elastic wave is reflected at the threaded parts of the specimen and the transmit bar. This reflected wave can interfere with the transmitted wave. A proper length of elastic bars and the location of strain gage in these elastic bars are determined to avoid this interference. In order to avoid the interference of elastic wave reflected at the threaded parts of specimen and elastic bar, the length of transmit bar must be longer than that of incident bar. Strain gage in transmit bar must be located as close as possible from the interface of a transmit bar and specimen. In the developed tensile SHPB test system, A12011-T3 and A17075-T6 are tested to get the true stress-strain relation in the range of strain rate at $10^3/sec$
Deformation on shapes of the hydrogen absorption metal in this paper was investigated on hydrogen absorption-desorption cycling. In order to study this problem, the cold rolled palladium plate and the cold extrusion palladium bar as specimens had been used. By using the electrochemical method, the palladium specimens were cyclically hydrogenated in the 0.1 mol H$_2$SO$_4$ electrolyte. As results, it is noted that the thickness of the plate specimen gradually increased in increasing hydrogenation cycles whereas the width and the length decreased. But both the diameter and the length of the bar specimen increased with increasing hydrogenation cycles. Also, grains in the plate specimen were greatly deformed after hydrogenation cycling whereas internal grains in the bar specimen were pulverized. And deterioration of the hydrogen absorption rate of the bar specimen was lager than the plate specimen.
The shear modulus of 3-bar lap rubber shear dynamic test specimen is investigated through incremented shear strain tests. The shear force-strain relation of rubber specimen is also calculated by ABAQUS using hyper-elastic material properties of high damping rubber. The analysis results are compatible with shear dynamic tests of 3-bar lap rubber specimen and 1/8 reduced-scale laminated rubber bearing
A long bar impact test to alumina plates(AD 85 and AD 90) was carried out by using fabricated impact testing apparatus. The apparatus adopting a long bar of 2.1m in length made it possible to measure directly the applied impact force to the specimen during bar impact. The dimension of specimens was $33{\times}33mm$ and thickness was 3.4mm. Confinement of D2=18mm outer diameter and D1=10.5mm inner diameter was used to provide contact pressure to the specimen. Contact pressure of p=100 or 200MPa was applied to specimen before impact test. Damage caused in those cases were compared with the case of without contact pressure. The damage of specimen was different depending upon the pressure level of confinement. The existence of confinement had suppressed the development of radial cracks from the bottom of specimen and reduced the extent of damage as compared with cases without contact pressure(p=0MPa). Because the application of contact pressure to the specimen increased the apparent flexural stiffness of specimen during bar impact, it had produced the change of developed damage in the specimen; from the radial cracks to the local contact stress dominant damage. It would contribute to the improvement of the ballistic property in ceramic plates.
The interest in the mechanical behavior of materials at high strain rates has increased in recent years, and by now it is well known that mechanical properties can be strongly influenced by the speed of applied load. The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) has been widely used to determine mechanical properties of materials at high loading rates. However, to ensure test reliability, measurement error source must be accounted for and eliminated. During experiment, the specimens were located between the incident and the transmit bar. The presence of contact frictions between the test bars and specimen may cause errors. In this work, numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of friction on test results. In SHPB test, the measured stress by the transmitted bar is assumed to be flow stress of the test specimen. Through the numerical experiments, however, it is shown that the measured stress by the transmit bar is axial stress components. When, the contact surface is frictionless, the flow stress and the axial stress of the specimen are about the same. When the contact surface is not frictionless, however, the flow stress and the axial stress are not the same anymore. Therefore, the measured stress by the transmitted bar is not flow stress. The effect of friction on the difference between flow stress and axial stress is investigated.
Tensile strength (stress) of bar splice is important in the research of mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete structures-beam, column etc.- with bar splice. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the flexural behavior - deflection of beam specimens, strain of main bars - of reinforced concrete beam with Lock Joint Coupler. To make a comparative research, reinforced concrete beam specimens with normal deformed bar and lap splice are tested and analyzed. Test results, Comparing a deflection of three types flexural specimens, a flexural specimen with Lock Joint Coupler is 40% greater than the other flexural specimens. At the center of flexural specimen, the strain of main bar(D29) with lock joint coupler is 50% less, and vice versa, at the point of 14cm far from the center of flexural specimen, the strain of main bar(D29) with lock joint coupler is 9% larger than the strain of main bar(D29) which calculated using the classical flexure theory. A discords, between a deflection behavior of the flexural specimens and a strain of the main bar, are caused by the difference of strain between the lock joint coupler and main bar, near the lock joint coupler. So, additional research is need to verify as stated above discords.
Bond strength of reinforcing bar to high-performance concrete using Belite cement is explored using beam end test specimen. The key parameters for the bond test are slump of concrete, top bar effect, and strength of concrete in addition to concrete covers. Specimen failed in the typical brittle bond failure splitting the concrete cover as the wedging action. The test results show that for the group with portland cement I using superplasticizer additional slump does not decrease the bond strength of the top bar is less than bond strength of bottom bar, but the top bar factor satisfy the modification factor for top reinforcement. The result also show that bond strength is function of square root of concrete compressive strength and cover thickness. More detailed evaluation will be conducted from the test specimen with high strength concrete using the belite cement.
This paper analyzes the magnetic property according to the machined shape of steel material with non-oriented silicon steel (50PN470/50A470), that is most commonly used in the design of electrical equipment. Toward this end, specimens were produced and divided into Bar-Specimen (Epstein Frame Tester) and Ring-Specimen (Toroidal Ring Tester). The characteristics of the electrical Silicon steel were measured using the instruments solely dedicated to measuring each specimen. The core loss of the Bar-Specimen, which is commonly used, was found to be less than that of the Ring-Specimen. This is a very important design factor in achieving the objectives of improving the product efficiency and predicting the performance of electrical equipment. It serves as a critical point of view in order to reduce the error between design value and product value. A comparative analysis was conducted regarding various characteristics (Hysteresis, B-H characteristic, Iron loss, Minor loop, Coercive force, Residual magnetic flux density, etc.) of the electrical silicon steel considered in the design of the electrical equipment according to the specimen.
Tension stiffening effects of reinforced concrete member with large diameter bar, mainly used at reactor building of nuclear power plant, are studied by uniaxial structural tests. Bond length and stress of steel bar, size of steel bar, and compressive strength of concrete are evaluated to tension stiffening by uniaxial tests. Problems and solution during the uniaxial test are suggested. The prevent splitting cracks, concrete cover-to-bar diameter ratio $c/d_{b}$ is kept 2.6~2.8. Because the bond length is increased as the size of steel bar, the specimen length of the D35 steel bar is required at least 2.0 m. The specimen length must be decided with bond length as well as concrete cover-to-bar diameter ratio to prevent splitting crack.

Measuring dynamic fracture toughness of brittle and small ceramic specimen is very difficult in a SHPB (Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar). As a countermeasure to this difficulty, a dynamic fracture toughness measuring method by the Chevron-notch ceramic specimen was proposed. Tested chevron specimens were of Chevron notch angles of 90$^{\circ}$, 100$^{\circ}$ and 110$^{\circ}$. Through finite element analysis, shape parameters of the Chevron-notch specimens according to notch angles were calculated. And the static fracture tough1ess of the Chevron-notch alumina specimen was measured as 3.8MPa√m similar to that of CT specimen with a precrack. Dynamic fracture toughness was 4.5MPa√m slightly higher than the static one. It was shown in this study that the proposed Chevron-notch specimens are valid to measure dynamic fracture toughness of extremely brittle materials such as ceramic.
