  • This paper presents a mechanism for improving performance of the IEEE 802.6 MAN(Metropolitan Area Network), a dual-bus structured high-speed communication network, by a more efficient use of bandwidth. The MAN protocol is able to handle various traffic and offers better transmission speed than the conventional LAN, but the unidirectional bus structure and propagation delay of request bits results in unfairness since higher nodes use more bandwidth. As the number of stations and the distances between them are increased, the problem becomes mere serious. As a solution, this paper presents a method that every station enables to identify the used slots, and that a specified class denoted 'erasure station' has with the functions of destination release, slot reuse. As a result, it is export to improve network bandwidth values of each station and the throughput and delay time was analytically analyzed, and it is shown that according to computer simulation results, this mechanism improves the network performance.

  • Since switched digital video (SDV) provides specific programs only to the subscribers who request the programs, SDV has attracted considerable interest of MSOs for bandwidth efficiency. In North America, MSOs service over 2.3 million households with the SDV for cable networks. In Korea, since demand of HD program, high-speed Internet, VoD, and VoIP is noticeably rising, the SDV is considered as the alternative for bandwidth saving and efficient managing. In this paper, the characteristics, operating structure, and bandwidth saving of the SDV are discussed and technical requirements for the SDV are also introduced. The channel switching performance and stability of the SDV are analyzed through the test-bed.

  • A bandwidth and power efficient high speed ubiquitous sensor network(USN) for realizing a ubiquitous society is a great challenge for researcher community. In this paper we incorporate a cooperative transmission protocol within a special type of multi-code modulation to meet these requirements. Multi-code(Mc) modulation has been developed for high-speed data transmission over wireless channels. We proposed a new class of orthogonal codes for multi-code modulation which is an orthogonal subset of orthogonal codes(OSOC). Our proposed OSOC structure allows us to use only one relay to cooperate M nodes that effectively reduces the bandwidth and power requirement. This protocol is similar to spread-spectrum(SS) technique that can reduce both broad and narrow band jamming.

  • In this paper, we discuss a novel reservation-based, asynchronous MAC protocol called 'Multi-rate Multi-hop MAC Protocol' (MMMP) for multi-hop ad hoc networks that provides QoS guarantees for multimedia traffic. MMMP achieves this by providing service differentiation for multirate real-time traffic (both constant and variable bit rate traffic) and guaranteeing a bounded end-to-end delay for the same while still catering to the throughput requirements of non real time traffic. In addition, it administers bandwidth preservation via a feature called 'Smart Drop' and implements efficient bandwidth usage through a mechanism called 'Release Bandwidth'. Simulation results on the QualNet simulator indicate that MMMP outperforms IEEE 802.11 on all performance metrics and can efficiently handle a large range of traffic intensity. It also outperforms other similar state-of-the-art MAC protocols.

  • When the multiple video sources are transmitted together through the channel of fixed bandwidth, an efficient picture quality control is necessary. This paper presents a joint picture quality control method to satisfy the user requirement by priority among the video sources. The better picture quality is assigned to the source of higher priority compared to lower priority. We obtain the bitrate for each source to have a required distortion level among the sources by using an approximate distortion-bitrate model for simple implementation. It is shown by simulation that the proposed bandwidth allocation method can keep almost the user-required picture quality among the sources in comparison to an independent bandwidth allocation method.

  • We propose an efficient uplink bandwidth request-allocation algorithm for variable-rate real-time service in IEEE 802.11 broadband wireless access networks. By introducing a notion of target delay under the framework of dual feedback, the proposed algorithm can assure the desired level of QoS while minimizing wastage of bandwidth allocation.

  • We analyze the relationship between channel coherence bandwidth and two complexity-reduced lattice reduction aided detection (LRAD) algorithms for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in correlated fading channels. In both the adaptive LR algorithm and the fixed interval LR algorithm, we exploit the inherent feature of unimodular transformation matrix P that remains the same for the adjacent highly correlated subcarriers. Complexity simulations demonstrate that the adaptive LR algorithm could eliminate up to approximately 90 percent of the multiplications and 95 percent of the divisions of the brute-force LR algorithm with large coherence bandwidth. The results also show that the adaptive algorithm with both optimum and globally suboptimum initial interval settings could significantly reduce the LR complexity, compared with the brute-force LR and fixed interval LR algorithms, while maintaining the system performance.

  • Among the P2P based multimedia streaming architecture, multiple chain architecture has advantage in adapting to dynamically changing network topology simply and rapidly, so this architecture is used for UCC broadcasting system. In UCC broadcasting system, general peer involved in DSLAM becomes UCC server rather than broadcasting system that transfers data from ISP servers. Therefore UCC data generated from UCC server peers is transmitted to peers through DSLAM, and this transmission uses uplink bandwidth of DSLAM. In this paper, I propose an efficient management method of DSLAM uplink bandwidths through negotiating tracker and UCC server peer or head peers of DSLAM. I propose the method that tracker restricts a bitrate of uplink stream of UCC servers when used uplink bandwidth of DSLAM exceeds a certain point of maximum uplink bandwidths. I will show the improved performance of proposed scheme rather than general method with respect to the uplink bandwidth of DSLAM by numerical analysis and simulation.
