  • This paper discusses performance bottlenecks that may occur when executing high-performance computing MPI applications in the Intel's next generation many-core processor called Knights Landing(KNL), as well as effective resource allocation techniques to solve this problem. KNL is composed of a host processor to enable self-booting in addition to an existing accelerator consisting of a many-core processor, and it was released with a new type of on-package memory with improved bandwidth on top of existing DDR4 based memory. We empirically verified an improvement of the execution performance of multiple MPI applications and the overall system utilization ratio by studying a resource allocation method optimized for such new many-core processor architectures.

  • Emerging applications with high data rates will need to transport bulk data reliably in wireless sensor networks. ARQ (Automatic Repeat request) or Forward Error Correction (FEC) code schemes can be used to provide reliable transmission in a sensor network. However, the naive ARQ approach drops the whole frame, even though there is a bit error in the frame and the FEC at the bit level scheme may require a highly complex method to adjust the amount of FEC redundancy. We propose a bulk data transmission scheme based on erasure-resilient code in this paper to overcome these inefficiencies. The sender fragments bulk data into many small blocks, encodes the blocks with LT codes and packages several such blocks into a frame. The receiver only drops the corrupted blocks (compared to the entire frame) and the original data can be reconstructed if sufficient error-free blocks are received. An incidental benefit is that the frame error rate (FER) becomes irrelevant to frame size (error recovery). A frame can therefore be sufficiently large to provide high utilization of the wireless channel bandwidth without sacrificing the effectiveness of error recovery. The scheme has been implemented as a new data link layer in TinyOS, and evaluated through experiments in a testbed of Zigbex motes. Results show single hop transmission throughput can be improved by at least 20% under typical wireless channel conditions. It also reduces the transmission time of a reasonable range of size files by more than 30%, compared to a frame ARQ scheme. The total number of bytes sent by all nodes in the multi-hop communication is reduced by more than 60% compared to the frame ARQ scheme.

  • The MPEG Video Service of hilving il property of continuity and large cilPilcity needs lilrge network capilcity. Because most of users have a heterogeneous network environment, it's not efficient way that all users have same size of video data to provide them with real time video service. Therefore, for the pUl1Xlse of an efficient and appropriate utilization of network resources, it requires to develop and deploy a new scalable transmission technique in consideration of respective network environment and individual clients computing power. The purpose of this paper is to develop a technology that can adjust the amount of dilta transmitted as an M1'EG video stream according to its gi yen communication bandwidth, and a technique that can reflect dynamic bilndwidth while playing a video stream. For this purpose, we propose a TFS (Temporal-Fidelity Scaling) technique that splits the MPEG video stream into various substream according to picture type or resolution. Those methods proposed her can filcilitilte an effective use of network resources, and provide multimedia MPEG video services in real- time with respect to individual client computing environment

  • Underwater acoustic sensor networks can be used disaster prevention and environmental monitoring systems in underwater environments. Because, the underwater environment is different from the ground, the long propagation delay, low transfer rates and limited bandwidth characteristics should be considered. In this, paper will propose the MAC protocol that allocates time slot into each node according to priority policy through the period of contention-free slot reservation in underwater acoustic sensor networks in order to avoid collision and minimize energy consumption waste. We perform mathematical analysis to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol with regard to the collision probability, the energy consumption by collision, throughput and channel utilization. We compare the proposed protocol with the conventional protocol, and the performance results show that the proposed protocol outperforms the conventional protocol.

  • RSVP (Resource reSerVation Protocol) is the Internet standard protocol for supporting QoS (Quality of Service) requirements by reserving network resources between the sender and the receiver. Several problems, such as common path identification and resource pre-reservation, should be solved to apply RSVP in wireless mobile environments. To resolve these problems, this paper proposes DBRA (Dynamic Branch Router Approach) based on two designated entities, candidate access routers and a branch router. While several RSVP sessions between a branch router and candidate routers are managed, DBRA makes use of only one RSVP session between the sender and a branch router. Based on a network simulation, the proposed scheme has been compared with MRSVP (Mobile RSVP) and HMRSVP (Hierarchical MRSVP) in terms of the average packet transmission rate, bandwidth utilization and RSVP session failure rate.

  • High quality real-time interactive multimedia services like VOD gained huge momentum by information technology industries during the middle of 1990, but failed successful commercial service deployment despite of the expectations. Among the number of reasons, lack of high bandwidth and QoS support from the network infrastructure have become main cause of the failure. On the other hand, the advance of computer industry-driven storage technologies has been reducing the price of in-home storage dramatically. This fact and the delivery of audio-visual material in a digital form to the home storage make very interesting multimedia service applications possible. It enables anytime content delivery (e.g., during off-peak time) without user interaction and anytime content play and, also, enhances utilization by reducing the loads applied to servers and networks using multicast network infrastructure. In this paper, we propose design and implementation of our anytime multimedia service system based on in-home storage, called IMPRESS-AMS.

  • The multi-core processors are being widely exploited by many high-end systems. With significant advances in processor architecture, the network band-width required on the high-end systems is increasing drastically. It is therefore highly desirable to manage multiple cores efficiently to achieve high network band-width with minimum resource requirements. Modern operating systems, however, still have significant design and optimization space to leverage the network performance over multi-core systems. In this paper, we suggest a novel networking process scheduling scheme, which decides the best processor affinity of networking processes based on the processor cache layout, communication intensiveness, and processor loads. The experimental results show that the scheduling scheme implemented in the Linux kernel can improve the network bandwidth and the effectiveness of processor utilization by 20% and 59%, respectively.

  • Overlay Multicast is an effective method for efficient utilization of system resources and network bandwidth without a need for hardware customization. Multicast tree reconstruction is required when a non-leaf node leaves or fails. However frequent multicast tree reconstruction introduces serious degradation in performance. In this paper, we propose a tree performance optimization algorithm to solve this defect by using information(RTCP-probing) that becomes a periodic feedback to a source node from each child node. The proposed model is a mechanism performed when a parent node seems to cause deterioration in the tree performance. We have improved the performance of the whole service tree using the mechanism and hence composing an optimization tree. The simulation results show that our proposal stands to be an effective method that can be applied to not only the proposed model but also to existing techniques.

  • Overlay Multicast is an effective method for efficient utilization of system resources and network bandwidth without using hardware customization. Unlike in IP multicast, multicast tree reconstruction is required when non-leaf node leaves or fails. In this paper, we propose a proactive approach to solve this defect by using a resource reservation of the out degrees. This allows children of non-leaf node to connect to its new parent node immediately when its parent node leaves or fails. In our proposal, a proactive route maintenance gives a fast recovery time and reduces a delay effect in the new route. The simulation results show that our proposal takes shorter period of time than the other algorithms to reconstruct a similar tree and that it is a more effective way to deal with a lot of nodes that have lost their parent nodes.

  • WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) based-on fixed wavelengths is a new means of utilizing the bandwidth of optical fibers. In this Paper, an improved virtual topology called "(a, $\beta$,${\gamma}$) ShuffleNet " is introdced for designing large-scale WDM switches. The proposed one is an architecture created by vertically stacking x planes of a ($\beta$,${\gamma}$) ShuffleNet in parallel via $\beta$r nodes called "bridge nodes" so that N-by-N(N=(x*$\beta$${\gamma}$*${\gamma}$) switching is achieved based on the self-routing algorithm for each ($\beta$,${\gamma}$) ShuffleNet. With the topological parallelism, in contrast to the conventional virtual topologies, the diameter of 2${\gamma}$ hops can be fixed and high utilization and performance are provided while N increases. Such a scalability characteristic allows to design a growable broadband switch. As for the delay, we show that the traffic locality, due to the topological feature. result in low delay characteristics.lay characteristics.
