  • Most of Korean survey institutions adopt quota sampling for telephone surveys based on region, gender and age-band. In weekdays, it is well blown that there exist substantial differences in day time in-house rate by individual's socio-demographic attributes. So, quota sampling may induce systematic respondent selection bias. To solve the problem, we propose "time-balanced quota sampling" in which interviewer's call time-band is added as an quota variable. Furthermore, we propose "time-balanced quasi-quota sampling" which is derived by partially relaxing evening time quotas in time-balanced quota sampling. We compare the conventional and the newly proposed quota sampling schemes by drawing Monte Carlo samples from the hypothetical population for which the Korea 2004 time use survey data is assumed.

  • In this paper, an effective method has been proposed for selection of white Gaussian noise(WGN) band for radio background noise measurement system under broad band noise environment. MMN which comes from industrial devices and equipment mostly happens in the shape of broad band noise mostly like impulsive noise and this is the main reason for increasing level in the present radio noise measurements. The existing method based on singular value decomposition has weak point that it cannot give good performance for the broad band signal because it uses signal's white property. The proposed method overcomes such a weakness of singular value decomposition based method by using signal's Gaussian property based method in parallel. Moreover, this proposed method hires a modelling based method which uses parameter estimation algorithm like maximum likelihood estimation(MLE) and gives more accurate result than the method using amplitude probability distribution(APD) graph. Experiment results under the natural environment has done to verify feasibility of the proposed method.

  • Measurement of the background radio noise is very important process being used in survey of radio noise environment, calculating the threshold level for the frequency occupancy measurement and so forth. First step of background radio noise measurement is to select the sample sub-band which is mostly dominated by the background white Gaussian noise (WGN) within the target band. The second step is to carry out the main measurement of radio noise on this selected sample sub-band for the representative value of the noise power. In this paper, a method for selection of sample sub-band for the effective background radio noise measurement using SVD is proposed under the assumption that background radio noise is WGN. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the APD method which is widely used for the same purpose. Simulation results are shown to demonstrate the high performance of the proposed method in comparison with the existing APD method.

  • As digital communication technology evolves, the diversity of maritime communication methods has benn increasing due to the emergence of new maritime communication technologies such as digital very high frequency (VHF) communication systems and LTE-M as well as traditional conventional maritime communication systems. At sea, all maritime communication methods may be available, but only some communication methods may be available depending on the location. In this paper, we propose a multi-band network selection (MNS) system that can provide seamless maritime communication service by switching to an optimal communication band among available communication systems, depending on network environment and user requirements. The proposed MNS system in the middleware layer is designed to be able to interface with two types of digital VHF communication systems that satisfy Annex 1 and Annex 4 of ITU-R M. 1842-1, LTE, and high frequency (HF) communication systems. We assign priority to each communication band, and design an optimal communication band determination algorithm based on this priority.

  • The Land Cover/Land Use Map have been constructed from 1998, which has hierarchical structure according to land cover/land use system. Level 1 classification Map have done using Landsat satellite image over whole Korean peninsula. Level II classification Map have been digitized using IRS-1C, 1D, KOMPSAT and SPOT5 satellite images resolution-merged with low resolution color images. Level II Land Cover/Land Use Map construction by digitizing method, however, is consuming enormous expense for satellite image acquisition, image process and Land Cover/Land Use Map construction. In this paper, the possibility of constructing Level II Land Cover/Land Use Map using hyperspectral satellite image of EO-1 Hyperion, which is studied a lot recently, is studied. The comparison of classifications using Hyperion satellite image offering more spectral information and Landsat-7 ETM+ image is performed to evaluate the availability of Hyperion satellite image. Also, the algorithm of the optimal band selection is presented for effective application of hyperspectral satellite image.

  • In this paper, we propose a data-driven-based beam selection scheme for massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems in ultra-dense networks (UDN), which is capable of addressing the problem of high computational cost of conventional coordinated beamforming approaches. We consider highly dense small-cell scenarios with more small cells than mobile stations, in the millimetre-wave band. The analog beam selection for hybrid beamforming is a key issue in realizing millimetre-wave UDN MIMO systems. To reduce the computation complexity for the analog beam selection, in this paper, two deep neural network models are used. The channel samples, channel gains, and radio frequency beamforming vectors between the access points and mobile stations are collected at the central/cloud unit that is connected to all the small-cell access points, and are used to train the networks. The proposed machine-learning-based scheme provides an approach for the effective implementation of massive MIMO system in UDN environment.

  • Recently the various applications and spectral indices development of airborne hyperspectral imagery(A-HSI) has been increased. Especially the vegetation indices (VIs) were used to verify stress and vigor of vegetation. The VIs needs two or more spectral bands selectively to calculate as NIR(near infrared) and red wavelength. The A-HIS has specific band characteristics as narrow, continues and many. The A-HIS has narrow, continues and many specific band characteristics. That could be make it confuse which of bands could be explained for appropriate vegetation characteristics. If the A-HIS bands is not the same the wavelength with VIs' development band setting, then it need a selection adequate for spectral characteristics of target vegetation. Therefore we set 4 substitute bands for NIR and red wavelength respectively and calculated two VIs combined with substitute bands such as NDVI(normalized difference vegetation index) and MSRI(modified simple ratio index). To consider the variation of each VIs, we adapted the image differencing method of change detection technique. Also, we used spectral derivative to identify appropriate bands for spectral characteristics of digital forest cover type map. The result of adequate bands for two VIs selected red #3 as 680.2nm and NIR #2 as 801.7nm. This wavelength was good for any forest type in low variations.

  • In this paper, the high-band codec for bandwidth scalable wideband speech codec is proposed. The wideband input speech signal is separated into low-band signal and high-band signal, and the low-band signal is encoded by the standard narrow-band speech codec and the high-band signal is encoded by the proposed codec. In the high-band codec. the signal is transformed into frequency domain by MLT on a subframe basis, and MLT coefficients are splitted into magnitude and sign for quantization. The magnitudes of MLT coefficients are arranged into several time-frequency bands and each band is quantized in 2D-DCT domain, where the low-band information is utilized for better performance. The sign of MLT coefficient is quantized based on a priority selection process with the weighting measurement. The objective and subjective performance of wideband speech codec including the proposed high-band codec is measured, and it is confirmed that the proposed codec has better performance than 32kbps G.722.1.

  • A high redshift quasar is useful to investigate the early part of our universe. Since they are one of the brightest objects in the early universe, they can provide us with clues of the growth of super massive black holes and the early metal enrichment history. To discover the high redshift quasars, we designed a survey of wide area and moderate depth; Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS), a J-band imaging survey of ~200 deg2 area where the multi-wavelength data sets exist. To obtain the J-band data, we are using the United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope (UKIRT), and so far we have covered~40 deg2 with Y- or J-bands over 36 observing nights. We used color-color diagrams of multi-wavelength bands including i, z, Y, J, K, $3.6{\mu}m$ and $4.5{\mu}m$ to select high redshift quasars. The major challenge in the selection is many M/L/T dwarfs, low redshift galaxies, and instrumental defects that can be mistaken as a high redshift quasar. We describe how such contaminating sources can be excluded by adopting multiple color-color diagrams and eye-ball inspections. So far, our selection reveals one quasar candidates at z~7 and a few candidates at z~6. In this poster presentation, we will update the current status of the quasar selection in the IMS fields.
