Employing Laccase-Producing Aspergillus sydowii NYKA 510 as a Cathodic Biocatalyst in Self-Sufficient Lighting Microbial Fuel Cell

  • In the present work, we isolated and identified Aspergillus sydowii NYKA 510 as the most potent laccase producer. Its medium constituents were optimized to produce the highest possible amount of laccase, which was after 7 days at 31℃ and pH 5.2. Banana peel and peptone excelled in inducing laccase production at concentrations of 15.1 and 2.60 g/l, respectively. Addition of copper sulfate elevated enzyme yield to 145%. The fungus was employed in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The best performance was obtained at 2000 Ω achieving 0.76 V, 380 mAm-2, 160 mWm-2, and 0.4 W. A project to design a self-sufficient lighting unit was implemented by employing a system of 2 sets of 4 MFCs each, connected in series, for electricity generation. A scanning electron microscopy image of A. sydowii NYKA 510 was utilized in algorithmic form generation equations for the design. The mixed patterning and patterned customized mass approach were developed by the authors and chosen for application in the design.

  • We have developed a multi-channel, multi-frequency EIT system with operating frequency of 10Hz to 500KHz. The number of digital voltmeters using phase-sensitive demodulation can be varied from 8 to 64 and we found that 16 and 32-channels are most practical. This paper describes the design, implementation, and construction of 16 and 32-channel systems. The performance of the system was thoroughly tested and we found that CMRR of the developed voltmeter is about 85dB with $100{\Omega}$ unbalancing series resistor. The SNR is greater than 99.6dB and the output impedance of the constant current source is $1{\Omega}W$ at least for all frequencies. Imaging experiments using a banana with frequency-dependent conductivity and permittivity show that frequency-difference imaging is possible using the developed system. Future works of animal and human experiments are discussed.

Effect of packing Methods on the Storage of Banana (포장방법이 바나나 저장성에 미치는 영향)

  • The storage stabilities of philipines; bananas were investigated according to the storage pretreatments and packaging methods during 60 days storage at $13^{\circ}C$. The better storage stability was got in bananas packaged with $60\mum$ low density polyethlene(PE) film inside the carton box than those without inside pack. Radiation gave the adverse effects on effects on bananas was only 20 days. And Shelf-life of bananas in no inner pack was 20 days. Soluble solid content of bananas packaged with PE film was 17 Brix degree after 60 days storage, but that with no inner package was around 20 after 20 days. Color was below 3 in color chart after 60 days storage and hardness was rapidly decreased from 40 days in bananas packaged with PE film, but color was became to 3 color after 30 days and hardness was rapidly decreased after 20 days in bananas without inner package. rarcentage of deteriorated bananas were below 3% in PE films after 60 days strorage, but 100% after 40 days in bananas without inner package.

The Effect of Olfactory Stimulation on Word Retrieval Performance in Aphasics

  • The present study attempted to determine the effect of olfactory stimulation on word retrieval deficit in Korean aphasics. Eleven nonfluent and 9 fluent aphasic patients served as subjects. The 20 subjects' age ranged from 14 to 65 with the mean of 43.0 (SD: 17.6). A neurologist examined them and diagnosed that they had no visual, auditory, and olfactory impairment. The study consisted of 2 experiments: Experiment I included visual stimulation while experiment II included visual and olfactory stimulation. The subjects were presented with 19 pictures for them to name in the experiment I, whereas they were exposed to the 19 pictures along with the corresponding olfactory stimulus in the experiment II. The 19 items included soy sauce, chilly pepper, Kimchi, chewing gum, cigarette (smoked), soybean paste, lemon, banana, alcohol (wine), apple, fish, vinegar, cuttlefish (dried), milk, rose, sesame oil, melon, coffee, and perfume. The results were as follows: First, olfactory stimulation tended to improve aphasics' word retrieval deficit although the improvement was not statistically significant. Second, the nonfluent aphasics seemed to take more advantage from olfactory stimulation compared to the fluent aphasics. Third, olfactory stimulation (olfactory + visual) did not produce a different naming performance compared to visual stimulation in the pre- and post-test when the pre- and post-test was composed of naming tasks through auditory + visual stimulation. Fourth, the fluent aphasics performed better with unpleasant olfactory stimulus while the nonfluent aphasics performed better with pleasant olfactory stimulus.

Abnormal Seedlings Emerged during Embryo Rescue and Its Remedy for Seedless Grape Breeding

  • The abnormal seedlings, a common physiological anomalies, emerged during embryo rescue severely restricted grape breeding. To enhance the efficiency of the seedless grape breeding by reducing the production of abnormal seedlings in the course of embryo rescue, we investigated the effects of genotype, media type, embryo style, pre-chilling on the deformity rate of the abnormal seedlings during embryo rescue. The abnormal seedlings were firstly classified into seven categories based on their morphology. Our results indicated that the emergence of abnormal seedlings was highly dependent on the female parent genotype. Polyembryony was advantageous to diminish the number of abnormal plantlets and the germination rate of embryo was 100%. We also found that pre-chilling treatment could reduce the number of abnormal plantlets and promote the embryo germination. The abnormal plantlets were reduced significantly by the addition of $ZnSO_4$ $10{\mu}mol{\cdot}L^{-1}$ or mashed-banana $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ to either embryo development or germination media. Transferring the abnormal seedlings onto the suitable fresh media in 4 weeks after embryo germination provided an effective way to transform them into normal seedlings.

  • This study has been analyzed and investigated the possibility for the substitution of a heat source with the application of PTC(Positive Temperature Coefficient Heater) in a food drying machine. And this experiment was conducted to measure temperatures at the upper part of the vessel and the heat sink. And the structure has the many holes plane connected with the external air in the upper part of similar volumetric vessel, and attached to the PTC heater (3sets) of total consumption electricity of 120[W] in Al radiant heat structure and the small fan (2sets) in the suitable space of the lower part. Consequently, it was found that at the most conditions of food drying test with the seven holes(5mm) under the control temperature $62^{\circ}C$, the optimum drying condition formatted and the optimum time range especially appeared from 6,500 second to 7,000 second in case of drying test on banana sample.

  • New banana-shaped achiral compounds, 1,3-phenylene bis [4-{4-(7-octenyloxy)phenyliminomethyl}benzoate](PBOEB), 1,3-phenylene bis [4-{3-fluoro-4-(7-octenyloxy)phenyliminomethyl}benzoate] (PBFOEB), 1,3-phenylene bis [4-{4-(10-undecyloxy)phenyliminomethyl}benzoate](PBEUB), and 1,3phenylene bis [4-{3-fluoro-4-(10-undecyloxy)phenyliminomethyl}benzoate](PBFEUB) were obtained by general synthetic methods. PBOEB and PBFOEB having the octenyloxy groups such as $-(CH_2)_6CH=CH_2$ showed ferroelectric switching, and their values of spontaneous polarization on reversal of an applied electric field were 120 nC/$cm^2$ and 225 nC/$cm^2$, respectively. PBEUB and PBFEUB having the undecyloxy groups such as $-{CH_2)_9CH=CH_2$ showed antiferroelectric switching, and their values of spontaneous polarization on reversal of an applied electric field were 120 nC/$cm^2$ and 140 nC/$cm^2$, respectively. We could obtain ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases by controlling the number of carbon atom in alkenyloxy chains of bent-core molecules.

Antifungal Activity in Cell-Free Culture Fluid of Pseudomons solanacearum Strains Collected from Severe Provinces in the North of Vietnam.

  • A research collection of Pseudomons solanacearum bacteria, a pathogen causing ‘bacteria wilt’ disease of more than 265 plant species, represented for northern provinces of Vietnam has recently been established and was saved for examination of antifungal activity in their culture fluids. All strains used in this work have been isolated from infected tomato, potato, and groundnut collected from production fields and they express different levels of virulence on their host plants. Cell-free culture fluids of these strains were tested for antifungal activity (to inhibit growth of mycelium and to destroy germination tube of fungal spores) on a number of fungi that either infect or associate with vegetable crops of Solanaceae family (tomato, potato, pepers...), fruit plants (banana), and even well-known by Vietnamese traditional medicine herbal plants belonging to Trifoliatus, Schefflera, Homalomena and Panax genera (Araliaceae family) of which roots are used as a resource of the herbal material. The antifungal activity was found in nearly all strains tested. Result of study on chitin, CMC, tween 80 and casein degradation abilities of the latter suggested that antifungal activity of positively-found strains may be due to their ability of extracelluar chitinase's excretion that destroy fungal cell wall.

An Experimental Study on the Effects of Intake Manifold Shapes on the Torque Characteristics in a 3-Cylinder LPG Engine (흡기다기관 형상변화가 3기통 LPG엔진의 토크 특성에 끼치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of intake manifold shapes to improve the engine performance in a 3-cylinder LPG engine with a closed loop fuel supply system. To know the flow resistance of intake manifolds with shape, the intake negative pressure of each runner in intake manifolds were measured by using the digital pressure meter at each driving condition. And, the engine torque and power have been measured with an engine dynamometer while adjusting the optimal fuel consumption ratio with a solenoid driver. As 속 results form this experiment, the torque characteris- tics were more improved with the plenum chamber(B type intake manifold) than with the banana type(A type intake manifold). The torque characteristics were improved at mid-engine speed(rpm) range as the inner diameter of the intake manifold became smaller. And also the optimum volume among the examined plenum chamber volume was 0.74 times(590cc) the displacement of the test engine.

Drosophilid Fauna of Six Regions Near the Demilitarized Zone in Korea (韓國非武裝地帶隣近 6個地域의 초파리 分布相)

  • Collections of the drosophilid flies were made at 6 regions near the dimilitarized znoe form October 1966 to June 1968, with particular attention to their habitats and distribution. A total of 5022 flies representing 34 species belonging to 7 genera were obtained mostly by the traps baited with fermenting apples and banana, partially by the aid of net. The data accumulated for about 21 months are summarized in this paper. Drosophila auraria and D. angularis were found to be most common species showing the most extensive distribution. In eastern part, a total of 1552 individuals(30.90%) representing 27 species, 7 genera were sampled. In central part, a total of 2658 flies (52.93%) yielded 29 species, 6 genera. In western part, a total of 812 specimens(16.17%) which belong to 16 species representing 3 genera were collected. Most specimens belonging to the genus Scaptomyza have been found on grasses.
