  • The ballistic missile is very threatening weapon system because it is difficult to detect and intercept due to fast speed. Recently, many countries worry about North Korea's ballistic missile launching tests especially the success of launching Kwangmyongsong-3 satellite by Eunha-3 long range rocket at 2012. This event means announcement of North Korea have capability to develop ICBM(Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) to all over the world. In this paper, it is surveyed and described that history, types and threat of ballistic missiles.

  • Radar Cross Section(RCS) is very important factor to detect target by radar. Even if the same target, RCS value is significantly different according to the direction facing the radar. Therefore, it is advantageous to place the radar, where RCS is larger to increase the probability of detecting a target with a radar. North Korean ballistic missiles are major threat to our security, ballistic missiles should be detected early and traced for ballistic missile defense. In this paper, it is analyzed that ballistic missile's RCS characteristics and trajectory and proposed a way of radar deployment to improve the detection probability of ballistic missile.

  • This paper analyzed flight trajectory characteristics of ballistic missiles considering effects of drag forces. It is difficult to intercept ballistic missiles which fly over atmosphere with supersonic speeds and small radar cross section (RCS). In particular, the velocities in the phases of boost and terminal are changed significantly due to the steep variation of the drag force. Therefore, in order to build up a successful ballistic missile defense systems, the effects of the drag forces should be considered in the analysis of ballistic missile trajectory characteristics. In this point of view, this work analyzed the effects of drag forces and derived the flight trajectory characteristics of Scud B, C and Nodong missiles. Model of the ballistic missile flight trajectory is considered the effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces, and specifications of the missiles are open sources.

  • North Korea has various ballistic missiles from short range to long range such as inter continental ballistic missiles. Short range ballistic missiles such as SCUD series are threatening to Korea peninsula. Therefore Korea is constructing various missile defense systems to protect country. Parameters influencing the received power from the target to the radar are transmitting power, antenna gain, carrier frequency, RCS(Radar Cross Section) of target and distance from radar to target. Especially, RCS and distance from target are not radar performance defined parameters but external parameters. Therefore radar deployment position that large RCS can be observed and target to radar distance should be considered in parallel to improve target detection probability. In this paper, RCS pattern of SCUD-B ballistic missile is calculated, received power is analyzed based on radar deployment position during ballistic missile trajectory and methode for optimum radar deployment position to improve target detection probability is suggested.

  • In this study, to improve the ballistic efficiency of very brilliant alumina-silica armor material, forming press and sintering temperature were changed. After physical/mechanical measurement, we measured ballistic properties about KE(Kinetic Energy, L/D=10.7, tungsten heavy alloy) and HEAT(High Explosive Anti-Tank, K215) projectiles and analyzed them. As a result, in $1235^{\circ}C$, it appeared the highest ballistic efficiency about HEAT and it improved $22\%$ ballistic efficiency, better than invented alumina-silica armor material before.

  • A computational work has been performed to investigate the aerodynamics of a projectile which is launched from a ballistic range. A moving coordinate method for a multi-domain technique is employed to simulate unsteady projectile flows with a moving boundary. The variation of a virtual mass and the shape of projectile are added to the axisymmetric unsteady Euler equation systems. The present computational results properly predict the velocity, acceleration, drag histories and the major flow characteristics of the projectile.

  • In order to investigate the effect of face material on Ti/Al alloy laminates under high velocity impact, a ballistic testing was conducted. Ballistic resistance of these materials was measured by protection ballistic limit($V_{50}$), a statistical velocity with 50% probability penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, were respectfully observed, by $V_{50}$ test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test at velocities greater than $V_{50}$. PTP tests were conducted with $0^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_{50}$ tests with $0^{\circ}$obliquity were also done with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Resistance to penetration, and penetration modes which face material was Titanium alloy, were compared to those which face material was anodized Al alloy after cold-rolling.

  • A computational study has been performed using a chimera scheme to study the various operating processes inside a ballistic range. The compression flow fields in the pump tube and projectile motion in the launch tube are captured for various piston masses and diaphragm rupture pressures. The effect of a shock tube in between the pump tube and launch tube is analyzed. The results are compared with available experimental data. It is noted that, by adding a shock tube in between the pump tube and launch tube, the peak pressure in the ballistic range can be reduced without appreciable reduction in the velocity of the projectile.
