  • Displayed result that handle particle contaminant and hydrospace organism included in number of ballast that is happened in ship using automatic bade washing filter. Reason that remove first contaminant that is included in number of ballast is that heighten processing effect of after processing process. of the filter. Another advantage is to drop off the solids with controlling revolution of drum screen in pretreatment filtration process. The fact that it is easy to attach and detach a several type of screen for getting the expected water quality is another advantage. Filter rotation speed at 1.0rpm is filter resistance 3.0bar and 3.0rpm is filter resistance 2.8bar. Filter out impurities from ballast water over 6.0rpm is filter resistance 26bar and 10rpm is filter resistance 2.5bar. Filtration system removal aquatic organism over $80{\mu}m$ in ballast water. This study shows that the filtration treatment system has a potential for the treatment of ballast water.

  • The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships Ballast Water & Sediments was adopted by consensus at a diplomatic conference of IMO at 2004. To prepare the Ballast Water Management Convention, fundamental technologies such as treatment system, type approval, risk assessment and various technical informations for formulation of the regulation for national strategy shall be developed. The information item of voyage and discharge of ship's ballast water are gathered by visiting vessel and agent at port. Using the 97 results by ships type characteristic analysis on the relation between loading/unloading and discharge/uptake of ballast water, the amounts of discharge/uptake of ballast water at each port and all of country in Korea are predicted. Hence, It is apparent that the uptake of ballast water is predicted to about 70 million ton in total of Busan, Incheon, Kwangyang and Ulsan ports at 2006 which is over 3 times than discharges.

A Study on Retrofitting BWTS using 3D Digital Design (3D Digital Design 기법을 이용한 BWTS 설치 설계 연구)

  • Over the past few years, as maritime trade and traffic were highly expanding, problem of invasive species via ballast water have been raised. In 1988, Canada and Australia had firstly experience that unexpected and hazardous species were observed on their own sea, they have issued the problem to MEPC under the IMO. At the end of many years of discussion, on the diplomatic conference in 13 Feb. 2004, "International Convention for the Control and Management of Ballast Water and Sediments of the Ship" was adopted. Requirements for entering into force of this Convention is that 30 countries ratify and world merchant marine fleet is more than 35% and BWM Convention will be effected after 12months from date satisfying conditions. With Finland ratifying the BWM Convention on 8 Sep. 2016, the fleet amounted to 35.1441% and ratification country became 52 countries. Therefore, after 12month, BWM Convention will be formally effected on 8 Sep. 2017. Ballast Water Treatment System is to be fitted in new ships as well as existing ships. Thus, there are concerns of ship owners to be suitably installed a variety typed BWTS in many kinds of vessels. As approaching for resolving these problems, engineering analysis was carried out research studies and detailed design to analyze to optimal installation space for retrofitting a BWTS using 3D Scanning method, targeting representative DWT 180K Bulk carrier of dry cargo vessels charged more 40% on worldwide vessel and mainly two type BWTS as electrolysis treatment type and ultra violet treatment type. Optimal design of 3D Scanning technology was applied to analyze four step process and the overall conclusion was described in this paper.

  • Various kinds of ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) have been developed corresponding to reinforced IMO rules for marine environment. Some of them got the certificate of IMO and others are waiting for it. Selection of optimum BWTS is very important. Optimum BWTS means not only functional requirements but also economic efficiency. This paper presents economic analysis model for optimum BWTS according to ship type and size. In this study 10 kinds of BWTS whose initial installation cost and maintenance cost are known are analyzed based on present worth method. It is assumed that all BWTS satisfy minimum functional requirements and we need to consider different economical efficiency. Through the economic analysis we could select optimum BWTS.

  • Ballast water from ship harmful microorganism sterilized use of electrolytic sterilization system. The experimental methods were use of peristaltic flow pump upward on electrode pole. Due to reaction time, HRT were unlike microorganism on flow rate. In electrolysis, dioxide iridium coated titanium(Ti/IrO$_2$) and stainless steel plate were used for anode and cathode respectively. Current density controls make use of D.C Power supply on 250V 100Amper. Experimental use of current density between 0.1 and 0.5A was able to disinfect microorganism at 5 seconds by the reaction time. This study shows that the electrolyzed water has a potential for the sterilization of ballast water.

  • Potassium iodide (KI) TRO sensor for measuring total residual oxidant which is an index for disinfection and neutralization in ballast water has been constructed. The results of UV absorption wavelength and absorbance test in various TRO concentrations show high linear correlation ($r^2=0.9825$) at 350 nm wavelengths and it can be possible to visualize numerical value of TRO concentration (0.1~7.0 mg/L). The result of comparison test according to TRO concentration between the KI based TRO sensor system and the DPD based TRO sensor system showed identical trend. Overall results indicated that the KI TRO sensing system could be applied for continuous TRO concentration measurement in ballast water treatment system.

  • The treated ballast water from previous treatment contains microorganisms and pathogenic organisms in an electrolytic treatment system. The experimental methods included using a peristaltic flow pump placed upward on an electrode pole. Due to the reaction time, the hydraulic retention time indicated unlike microorganisms on the flow rate. In electrolysis, dioxide iridium-coated titanium (Ti/Ir02) and stainless steel plates were used for the anode and cathode, respectively. Current density controls make use of a DC power supply on 250V, 100Amper. Experimental use of a current density between 0.1 and 1.0A/dm2 was able to disinfect the microorganism (E. coli, Bacteria, Bacillus sp.) in seawater for 5 seconds of reaction time. The removal rate was approximately $90\%,$ while the current density was 2.0A/dm2 and the electrode distance was 75mm. This study shows that the electrolytic treatment system has a potential for the sterilization of ballast water.

  • The aims of this study are to provide data on the ozone dosage control system and TRO sensor performance, to assess the performance of the degradation of total residual oxidant (TRO) neutralizer and to provide data on degradation rates of TRO in the ballast tanks, following treatment by the Ozone BWTS. This study includes the results of an evaluation of the TRO neutralizer, which was tested on the test barge. Accordingly, it has undertaken the evaluation of TRO degradation rates following treatment by the Ozone BWTS.

  • At present, the low-voltage, high-current type power supply is mainly used for effective sterilization in the ballast water treatment system. Research on PSFB converters without output capacitors has been ongoing. Such converters effectively treat ballast water without a separate disinfectant through electric pulses by applying a pulse-type power to the output electrode without an output capacitor. However, in the case of the pulse-type electrolysis treatment method, voltage overshoot can occur due to abrupt voltage fluctuations when the load changes, resulting in circuit reliability problems because of the output capacitorless system. Therefore, a new voltage control algorithm is required. In this paper, we will discuss voltage control for pulsed electrolysis topology without an output capacitor. The proposed voltage control method has been verified using Simulation and experiment. The usefulness of the proposed control method has been proven by the experimental results.

Economy Analysis to Retrofit Ballast Water Treatment System for an Existing Vessel (선박 평형수 처리장치 선정을 위한 경제성 분석)

  • Since Ballast Water Management Convention has been effected, BWTS, applied to new-building vessels and existing vessels, have been developed from many countries with various treatment methods. However, BWTS is mainly typed Electrolysis, Ozone and UV type. Approximately 70 products have been type approved by the Flag Administrations. For the new-building vessels, the vessels' design and construction have been considered for arrangements and installations for BWTS. However, existing vessels which already construction had finished have problem with selection of BWTS type for installation and arrangement. The selection of the most economized BWTS system is important though, CAPEX has not been made any significant differences. However, OPEX is more important factor. Consequently, detail analysis of OPEX is the key to the selection of the most economized BWTS system and also it can be the purpose of this study. The feasibility study on the main three type of BWTS (Electrolysis, Ozone and UV type) for 175K Bulk Carrier and 57K Cargo ship has been conducted for this study. Because, these three type of BWTS have been the most frequently installed and used and the two type of object vessels are consist of the 40% of the world merchant ship market. For this study, interest rate, project duration (operation time after installation), maintenance cost and fuel oil price are considered as major factor of feasibility study. In addition, expecting Interest rates to sensitivity analysis conducted for more accurate feasibility study. For 175K Bulk carrier, ozone treatment system is more economical than other types. For 57K cargo ship, UV type is considered more economical than other types. However, it is concluded that electrolysis type is more suitable compare to installation space, total weight and electrical power consumption.
