  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of improvement in the balance control ability of the elderly affected by Hansen's disease. We tried to compare the effects for the elderly affected by Hansen's disease with and without foot deformity. The subjects consisted of 19 patients 65 years old and older. They participated in a balance training program twice per week for 8 weeks. The following results were obtained from the training program: 1. There were significant improvements in static balance ability in one leg standing (OLS), dynamic balance ability in tandem walk (TW) and four square step (FSS) (p<.05). 2. There was a significant difference between patients with and without single-foot deformity in TW before the program (p<.05). After training, however, the difference became less significant. Also, there was not much difference between recipients with and without single-foot deformity in terms of OLS and FSS. The results of this study suggest that we need to provide training programs and rehabilitation services for the elderly affected by Hansen's disease suffering from nerve injury and disability. Furthermore, further research efforts should be made concerning rehabilitation to overcome various forms of disability.

  • Purpose: This study aims to verify the effectiveness of sit-to-stand training with visual feedback to improve balance ability and knee extensor strength of total knee replacement patients. Methods: In this study, 15 patients with total knee replacement participated in this study. Subjects were assigned to two groups: a feedback group (experimental group)(n = 8) and a control group (n = 7). They all received 30 min of continuous passive motion (CPM) and sit-to-stand training for 15 min five times per week for two weeks. Knee extensor and balance ability were measured. Knee extensor was measured by Biodex system 3; balance ability was measured by Balancia software. Results: After the intervention, there was a significant difference in the strengthening of the knee extensor muscles in the feedback group, area 95%, weight distribution of the affected side, and the sit-to-stand test repeated five times (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that sit-to-stand training with visual feedback was more effective in increasing knee extensor muscle strength and balance ability than the sit-to-stand training without visual feedback. Therefore, in order to improve the knee extensor muscle and the balance of total knee replacement patients, it is necessary to consider providing visual feedback during sit-to-stand training.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of functional training using a sliding rehabilitation machine (SRM) on the mobility of the ankle joint and balance in children with cerebral palsy (CP). METHODS: The subjects consisted of 11 children who were diagnosed with spastic CP. They carried out the functional training using the SRM for 30 minutes, three times a week, for 8 weeks. Before and after all of the training sessions, the subjects were tested using the Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS) and Gross Motor Function Measurement (GMFM), range of motion (ROM) in the ankle joint, the pennation angle of the gastrocnemius muscle and the fascicle length of gastrocnemius muscle were measured to determine the mobility of the ankle joint and balance ability. RESULTS: There were significant differences between the pre-test and post-test in the PBS and GMFM. The ROM of the ankle joint was significantly increased after the functional training using the SRM. Moreover, the fascicle length was increased and the pennation angle was decreased after the functional training using the SRM, but the difference was not significant. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that functional training using the SRM may have some effect on the mobility of ankle joint and balance in children with CP. According to the results, this study could present an approach to the rehabilitation or treatment of children with CP.
