  • Numerical analysis was carried out to investigate performance and combustion characteristics of KSR-III liquid rocket engine with several types of baffle. To evaluate the change of performance and combustion characteristics with several types of baffle, the first numerical calculations were performed about baffle tab, radial blade baffle, and hub-and-spoke baffle. Then radial blade and hub-and-spoke baffle were determined to design two types of the KSR-III engine with baffles. Also to investigate the effect of injector arrangements and baffle positions, two types of radial blade baffle were calculated then numerical calculations were carried out with changing axial length of radial blade I, II and hub-and-spoke baffle. While axial length of baffle effected to performance very small, injector arrangement effected to performance largely through calculations of radial blade I, II. From the viewpoint of combustion instability, hub-and-spoke baffle controlled combustion instability effectively and there was the performance of hub-and-spoke baffle between radial blade I and II.

  • Baffle injectors are protruded into the combustion chamber and form an anti-pulsating baffle to prevent high-frequency combustion instabilities in transverse modes. Being exposed to a high heat-flux environment, the baffle injector has self-cooling passages through which kerosene is convected and heated. The baffle injector with 20 spiral cooling channels has been developed and successfully applied to 30 $ton_f$-class combustors without any performance loss due to an additional cooling. In this work, numerical analysis of conjugate heat transfer in baffle injectors with various cooling channel designs has been performed in order to reduce the fabrication cost which would be considerably increased for the 75 $ton_f$-class combustor. Prior to the application to a full-scale combustor, the thermal durability of the modified design has been verified through the subscale hot-firing tests.

  • The combustion characteristics of the KSR-III engine were investigated numerically from the viewpoint of performance and combustion field. For numerical analysis of KSR-III engine with hub-and-spoke baffle, 3-D calculation was performed about $30^{\cire}$ section and the prediction of performance was in a good agreement with hot-firing test result. As a result of baffle installed, the performance of KSR-III engine was reduced in comparison with no baffle case and local high temperature region appeared on injector plate, combustion wall and baffle wall, This calculation was used practically as basic data for designing injector plate with film cooling holes and predicting the performance of KSR-III final flight test.

  • A liquid rocket thrust chamber should have a high confidence in its combustion performance and combustion stability. Expecially, the injector of which function is spraying and mixing propellants plays an important role in getting the confidence. This study was carried out to evaluate combustion stability of a double swirl coaxial injector by using the model similarity method. Besides, in case of a baffle which was used to improve combustion stability, the length and gap effects of the baffle were investigated.

  • The role of the injector as an acoustic resonator is studied for the high performance rocket engine adopting the gas-liquid scheme injector. Acoustic behavior in the combustor with single injector is investigated numerically adopting linear acoustic analysis for cold condition. Acoustic-damping effect of the injector is evaluated by damping factor as a function of the injector length. From the numerical results, it is found that the injector can play a significant role in acoustic damping and the optimum length of the injector corresponds to half of a full wavelength of the longitudinal mode with the acoustic frequency to be damped in the chamber. In baffled chamber, the optimum lengths of the injector are calculated as a function of baffle length for both cold and hot conditions.

  • Simulating combustion tests have been performed to elucidate the effect of baffle gaps on the optimal damping characteristics in liquid rocket combustors where coaxial injectors are installed. Amplitude of pressure oscillation in model combustion chamber and the combustion stability margin are used to quantify the damping capacitance of baffles. Satisfactory agreement has been achieved with the results of cold acoustic tests. Present results have shown that the optimal gap for high acoustic damping capacity has also the large combustion stability margin in simulating combustion tests. Therefore, the present results can be utilized to determine the baffle length and optimal gap in full-scaled rocket combustors.

  • Cold acoustic tests have been performed to elucidate the effect of baffle gaps on the optimal damping characteristics in a liquid rocket combustor where coaxial injectors are installed. For several axial baffle lengths, an optimal acoustic damping capacitance has been achieved in a certain gap range. Cold acoustic tests for simulating fluid viscosity by changing the pressure in a model chamber have been done to study the main mechanism of optimal damping. Experimental data have shown that the optimal gap for high damping capacity exists mainly due to the viscosity near the gap of baffles. Therefore, axial baffle length can be reduced by using the optimal baffle gap, providing a possible solution of thermal cooling problems. Also, these optimum characteristics can be some guidelines for manufacturing and assembling injectors in full-scaled rocket combustors.
