Flounder culture has been developed mainly in the western parts of japan, and, to date, following six bacterial diseases have been reported. Bacterial white enteritis occurs in 16 to 30-day-old flounder larvae and often causes mass mortality in seed production. Bacterium named Vibrio sp. INFL invades and multiplies in the mucosae of posterier part of intestine, and causes desquamative enteritis. Gliding bacterial disease occurs mostly in juvenile stage and in spring to summer. Diseased signs are partial discoloration and erosion of skin and fins. Histologically, epidermis are removed, and the causative bacterium, Flexibacter maritimus, multiplies on the surface of demis and invades into the muscular tissue. Vibriosis caused by Vibrio anguillarum and related organisum is one of the well-known diseases among marine fish. Outbreaks of the disease in flounder culture are relatively few, but mass mortalities in fingerlings due to the disease were reported. An outbreak of nocardiosis in the autumn of 1984 has been reported, but since then the disease scarcely occurred. The disease is characterized by formation of abscesses under the skin and white nodes in the gill, heart, spleen and kidney. Streptococcicosis occurs frequently in recent years. Beta-hemolytic streptococcus is the causative bacterium, which possesses the same biochemical and serological characteristics as $\beta$-streptococci isolated from some marine and freshwater fish, and is seemed to related to Streptococcus iniae. Edwardsiellosis is the disease that causes most damage in flounder culture in Japan. Characteristic symptoms are swelling of abdomen and intestinal protrusion from the anus due to accumulation of ascites. Edwardsiella tarda, a well-known pathogen of freshwater fish, is the causative bacterium of the disease.

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that causes bacterial meningitis in humans. S. suis is an encapsulated gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacterium and is an important pathogen in pigs. This infectious disease usually manifests in humans as meningitis, endocarditis, septicemia, and arthritis. Most cases originate in Southeast Asia, and human S. suis infections are often reported in countries with a high density of pigs. Meningitis is a common clinical manifestation of S. suis infection. Moreover, hearing loss is a common complication that can be bilateral, profound, and/or permanent. This report presents two cases of bacterial meningitis and hearing loss caused by S. suis in patients without a history of direct exposure to pigs in an intensive pork industry region.
Bacterial soft rot was observed on radish grown in Hongcheon, Kanwon-Do, Korea. The soft rot symptoms began as small water-soaked lesions. The water-soaked lesions enlarged rapidly in roots and produced a foul odor. When roots were affected in the field, the shoots also became infected and watery, causing infected plants to wilt, disorganize, and die. The causal organism was isolated from the lesions, and the identified as Erwinia chrysanthemi based on the morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics. E. chrysanthemi is first described bacterium which causes bacterial soft rot on radish in Korea.
Bacterial soft rot caused damage to beets massively grown in Pyungchang, Kangwon province, Korea. The affected roots and stems became cream colored and slimy, and turned black, causing the plants to become wilt and die. The casual organism isolated from the infected plants was identified as Erinia carotovora subsp. carotovora based on physiological and biochemical characteristic, and the results of the Biolog program (Biolog Inc., U.S.A.). E. carotovora subsp. carotovora is the first discribed bacterium which causes bacterial soft rot on beet in Korea.
The hazelnut leaf holer (Anoplus roboris Sufr,, Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a devastating pest of hazelnut and oak trees. It causes approximately 20-30% economic damage to hazelnut production per year in Turkey. In the present study, in order to fond a more effective and safe biological control agent against A. roboris, we investigated the bacterial flora of the hazelnut leave holer, and tested them for insecticidal effects on it. According to morphological, physiological and biochemical tests bacterial flora were identified as Bacillus circulans (Ar1), Bacillus polymyxa (Ar2), Enterobacter sp. (Ar3) and Bacillus sphaelicus (Ar4). Insecticidal effects of bacterial isolates were performed on adult A. roboris. The highest insecticidal effect determined was 67% by B. sphaericus within eight days. The insecticidal effects of the other isolates (Ar1, Ar2 and Ar3) were determined as 33%, 47% and 47% within the same period, respectively.
Many of the fungicides and antibiotics currently available against plant pathogens are of limited use due to the emergence of resistant strains. In this study, we examined the effects of diphenyleneiodonium chloride (DPIC), an inhibitor of the superoxide producing enzyme NADPH oxidase, against fungal and bacterial plant pathogens. We found that DPIC inhibits fungal spore germination and bacterial cell proliferation. In addition, we demonstrated the potent antibacterial activity of DPIC using rice heads infected with the bacterial pathogen Burkholderia glumae which causes bacterial panicle blight (BPB). We found that treatment with DPIC reduced BPB when applied during the initial flowering stage of the rice heads. These results suggest that DPIC could serve as a new and useful antimicrobial agent in agriculture.
Ralstonia solanacearum species complex (RSSC) causes bacterial wilt, and it is one of the most important soil-borne plant pathogenic bacteria. RSSC has a large host range of more than 50 botanical families, which represent more than 200 plant species, including tomato. It is difficult to control bacterial wilt due to following reasons: the bacterial wilt pathogen can grow inside the plant tissue, and it can also survive in soil for a long period; moreover, it has a wide host range and biological diversity. In most previous studies, scientists have focused on developing biological control agents, such as antagonistic microorganisms and botanical materials. However, biocontrol attempts are not successful. Plant-derived metabolites and extracts have been promising candidates to environmentally friendly control bacterial wilt diseases. Therefore, we review the plant extracts, essential oils, and secondary metabolites that show potent in vivo antibacterial activities (in potted plants or in field) against tomato bacterial wilt, which is caused by RSSC.

Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) causes bacterial leaf blight (BLB) disease in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and it is among the most destructive pathogen responsible for severe yield losses. Potential bacterial biocontrol agents (BCAs) with plant growth promotion (PGP) abilities can be applied to better manage the BLB disease and increase crop yield, compared to current conventional practices. Thus, this study aimed to isolate, screen, and identify potential BCAs with PGP abilities. Isolation of the BCAs was performed from internal plant tissues and rhizosphere soil of healthy and Xoo-infected rice. A total of 18 bacterial strains were successfully screened for in vitro antagonistic ability against Xoo, siderophore production and PGP potentials. Among the bacterial strains, 3 endophytes, Bacillus sp. strain USML8, Bacillus sp. strain USML9, and Bacillus sp. strain USMR1 which were isolated from diseased plants harbored the BCA traits and significantly reduced leaf blight severity of rice. Simultaneously, the endophytic BCAs also possessed plant growth promoting traits and were able to enhance rice growth. Application of the selected endophytes (BCAs-PGP) at the early growth stage of rice exhibited potential in suppressing BLB disease and promoting rice growth.

A study on the prevalence and causes of sub-clinical mastitis was conducted on ten smallholder and large-scale dairy farms in Morogoro urban and peri-urban areas. A total of 65 lactating cows were screened using the California Mastitis Test (CMT). Confirmatory tests used included; the direct microscopic somatic cell count (DMSCC), culture, bacteriological and biochemical tests. Structured questionnaires were used to collect information on management aspects. Results showed 62% and 4% cows as sub- clinical and clinical mastitis cases respectively. Levels of infection were higher on smallholder farms (75%) than on large-scale farms (25%). All tested cows had high cell counts (>500,000) per ml of milk. Incidences of mastitis were significantly (p<0.05) related to milking practices. The dominant bacterial isolates in the same order were Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp, and Escherichia coli. Other organisms isolated included Pseudomonas spp and Klebsiella spp. It was concluded that the high rates of sub-clinical mastitis in the research area were mainly due to poor management and unhygienic milking practices.

Burkholderia glumae causes bacterial rice grain rot and bacterial wilt on many field crops. We developed a simple diagnostic streak method for the isolation of B. glumae from diseased plant material. The geographical distribution of 178 Korean isolates shows that B. glumae is widely spread in South Korea.
