An implicit viscous turbulent flow solver is developed for two-dimensional geometries on unstructured triangular meshes. The flux terms are discretized based on a cell-centered finite-volume formulation with the Roe's flux-difference splitting. The solution is advanced in time using an implicit backward-Euler time-stepping scheme. At each time step, the linear system of equations is approximately solved with the Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. The effect of turbulence effects is approximated with a standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ two-equation model which is solved separately from the mean flow equations using the same backward-Euler time integration scheme. The triangular meshes are generated using an advancing-front/layer technique. Validations are made for flows over the NACA0012 airfoil and the Douglas 3-element airfoil. Good agreements are obtained between the numerical results and the experiment.
The aim of the current study was to assess the effectiveness of backward gait training on the treadmill in patients with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP). Twelve patients with spastic diplegic CP participated in the study. An 8-week course of backward gait training was administered to the subjects for 3 days per week. Pre-intervention and post-intervention assessments of temporal-spatial gait parameters, the symmetry of the bilateral lower extremity weight bearing, and gross motor function were analyzed using motion analysis system, force plate, and Gross Motor Function Measurement (GMFM). There were significant improvements (p<.05) in the measures of both step length and right stance phase time. Joint kinematics showed increase in right hip abduction in initial contact and terminal swing, right hip external rotation and knee flexion in mid-swing, left ankle dorsiflexion in initial contact and terminal swing (p<.05). The symmetry of the bilateral lower extremity weight bearing and GMFM also significantly increased (p<.05). These findings indicate that backward gait training using a treadmill is beneficial for patients with spastic diplegic CP.
Previous studies have reported that decreased cognitive ability has been consistently associated with significant declines in performance of one or both tasks under a dual-task walking condition. This study examined the relationship between specific cognitive abilities and the dual-task costs (DTCs) of spatio-temporal gait parameters in stroke patients. The spatio-temporal gait parameters were measured among 30 stroke patients while walking with and without a cognitive task (Stroop Word-Color Task) at the study participant's preferred walking speed. Cognitive abilities were measured using Computerized Neuropsychological Testing. Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) were calculated to quantify the associations between the neuropsychological measures and the DTCs in the spatio-temporal gait parameters. Moderate to strong correlations were found between the Auditory Continuous Performance test (ACPT) and the DTCs of the Single Support Time of Non-paretic (r=.37), the Trail Making A (TMA) test and the DTCs of Velocity (r=.71), TMA test and the DTCs of the Step Length of Paretic (r=.37), TMA test and the DTCs of the Step Length Non-paretic (r=.36), the Trail Making B (TMB) test and the DTCs of Velocity (r=.70), the Stroop Word-Color test and the DTCs of Velocity (r=-.40), Visual-span Backward (V-span B) test and the DTCs of Velocity (r=-.41), V-span B test and the DTCs of the Double Support Time of Non-paretic (r=.38), Digit-span Forward test and the DTCs of the Step Time of Non-paretic (r=-.39), and Digit-span Backward test and the DTCs of the Single Support Time of Paretic (r=.36). Especially TMA test and TMB test were found to be more strongly correlated to the DTCs of gait velocity than the other correlations. Understanding these cognitive features will provide guidance for identifying dual- task walking ability.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 2 weeks of backward walking exercise (BWE) on cervical angle and gait parameters in college students with forward head posture. Methods : Fifteen subjects participated in the experiment. All the participants had a craniovertebral angle (CVA) of 55 degrees or less. The purpose of the study was explained to all the subjects prior to participation, and volunteered to take part in the study. A camera capable of taking pictures of the lateral plane was installed at a distance of 1.5 meters from each subject. Images of forward head posture were obtained before and after performing the BWE, and the CVA and craniorotational angle (CRA) were compared pre- versus post exercise. Foot pressure and gait parameters (step length of left and right, stride length, stance of left and right, swing of left and right, step time of left and right, and stride time) were measured using a rehabilitation treadmill. The subjects performed the BWE for 2 weeks. The exercise program consisted of a 5-minute warm-up exercise, 20-minute main exercise, and 5-minute cool-down exercise. In the main exercise, the treadmill speed was set to 2.4 km/h in the first week and 3.4 km/h in the second week. A paired t test was used to compare the CVA and CRA and gait parameters before and after the exercise. Results : Comparison of the CVA and CRA before and after the BWE revealed a significant difference post exercise, with a marked improvement in forward head posture after the exercise (p<.05). Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, the BWE is considered to be an effective exercise for the forward head posture. Also, additional research is needed to shed light on the impact of the BWE on gait parameters.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the spatiotemporal and kinematic gait parameters and muscle activity of the lower extremities between forward walking on sand (FWS) and backward walking on sand (BWS) in normal adults. Methods: This study was conducted on 13 healthy adults. Subjects performed FWS and BWS and the spatiotemporal and kinematic gait parameters of stride time, stride length, velocity, cadence, step length, stance, swing, double support, and hip range of motion (ROM), knee ROM were measured by a wearable inertial measurement unit system. In addition, the muscle activity of the rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), and gastrocnemius (GA) was measured. Results: The stride length, stride velocity, cadence, and step length in the BWS were significantly lower than FWS (p<0.05), and stride time was significantly greater (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the ratio of stance, swing, and double support between the two (p>0.05). The kinematic gait parameters, including hip and knee joint range of motion in BWS, were significantly lower than FWS (p<0.05). The muscle activity of the RF in BWS was significantly higher than FWS (p<0.05), but the muscle activity of the BF, TA, GA did not show any significant differences between the two movements (p>0.05). Conclusion: A strategy to increase stability by changing the gait parameters is used in BWS, and this study confirmed that BWS was a safe and effective movement to increase RF muscle activity without straining the joints. Therefore, BWS can be recommended for effective activation of the RF.

Flame stabilization characteristics were experimentally investigated in a fuel-air cross flowing mixing layer. A combustor consists of a narrow channel of air steam and a cross flowing fuel. Depending on the flow rates of methane and air, flame can be stabilized in two modes. First is an attached flame which is formulated at the backward step where the methane and air streams meet. Second is a lifted-flame which is formulated within the mixing layer far down steam from backward step. The heights and flame widths of the lifted flames were measured. Flame shapes of the lifted flames were similar to an ordinary edge flame or a tribrachial flame, and their behavior could be explained with the theories of an edge flame. With the increase of the mixing time between fuel and air, the fuel concentration gradient decreases and the flame propagation velocity increases. Thus the flame is stabilized where the flow velocity is matched to the flame propagation velocity in spite of a significant disturbance in the fuel mixing and heat loss within the channel. This study provides many experimental results for a higher fuel concentration gradient, and it can also be helpful for the development and application of a smaller combustor.
The purpose of this study was to kinematics factors on during round-off at end of beam-salto backward stretched with step-out to cross on balance beam. Four elite female gymnastics players participated as subject of this study. The methods of this study was analyzed using three dimentional analysis. The results and conclusion of this paper is obtained as follows ; 1. The phase of time was the most short time in board touch down phase and board take-off phase. Also, it was shown a more long time in total time compared to previous study. 2. The horizontal displacement of each phase was shown the most high levels in balance beam landing. The vertical displacement was display a non-linearity increase in board take-of phase, and it was shown the most high levels in vertical displacement during landing of balance beam. 3. The horizontal velocity of each phase was shown the most high levels in board touch down, and it was display a gradually decreased levels because flight during board take-of. The resultant velocity of CG on each phase was shown the most high levels in board touch down and board take-off. 4. The angle of hip joint was shown the most high levels as performed a motion in extension state during board take-off, and the angle of knee joint was display a increased levels because of flight cause body extension in board take-off. Also the angle of ankle joint was shown a increasing levels during board take-off. Considering to this results, it is suggest that the change of kinematics factors in board touch down and board take-off is key role on the effective board control.

The Allen-Cahn equation is solved numerically by operator splitting Fourier spectral methods. The basic idea of the operator splitting method is to decompose the original problem into sub-equations and compose the approximate solution of the original equation using the solutions of the subproblems. The purpose of this paper is to characterize higher order operator splitting schemes and propose several higher order methods. Unlike the first and the second order methods, each of the heat and the free-energy evolution operators has at least one backward evaluation in higher order methods. We investigate the effect of negative time steps on a general form of third order schemes and suggest three third order methods for better stability and accuracy. Two fourth order methods are also presented. The traveling wave solution and a spinodal decomposition problem are used to demonstrate numerical properties and the order of convergence of the proposed methods.
An interactive web-based teaching tool for a power semiconductor course at the University of Central Florida is presented in this paper. A novel approach is introduced using Technology Aided Design Tools (TCAD) to generate time-lapsed 2D semiconductor device cross-section embedded in a webpage using $Adobe^{(R)}$ Flash (web design tool) platform to create interactive movies that demonstrate complex device physical phenomenon. Students can step through the interactive movies forward, backward, pausing, or looping. Each step represents a giving bias condition. Current-voltage plots are represented along with the semiconductor device and a visual point is placed on the IV curve to indicate the current bias conditions. The changes are then reflected in the 2D cross-section movie area and the IV plot. This tool was implemented in a classroom setting to augment the lectures or for discovery learning.
