It is very important for ultrasonic test method to evaluate the integrity of the class I components in nuclear power plants. However, as the rltrasonic test is affected by internal structures and configurations of test materials, backscattering, that is, time invariant noise is generated in large grain size materials. Due to the above reason, the received signal results in low signal to noise(S/N) ratio. Split spectrum processing(SSP) technique is effective to suppress the grain noise. The conventional SSP technique. however, has been applied to unique algorithm. This paper shows that MPO(minimization and polarity threshold) algorithm which two algorithms are applied simulatancously, was utilized, the signal processing time was shorten by using the new constant-Q SSP with the FIR filter which frequency to bandwidth ratio is constant and the optimum parameters were analysed for the signal processing to longitudinal wave and shear wave with the same requirements of inspection on nuclear power plant site. Moreover, the new ultrasonic test instrument, the reference block of the same product form and material specification, stainless stell test specimens and copper test specimens block of the same fabricated for the application of new SSP technique. As the result of experimental test with new ultrasonic test instrument and test specimens, the signal to noise ratio was improved by appying the new SSP technique.
This paper presents an overview of the geological environment investigation and underwater acoustic measurements for the purpose of "Study on the Relationship between the Geological Environment and Acoustic Propagation in Shallow Water", which are jointly carried out by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology) and Hanyang University in the western shallow water off the Taean peninsula in the Yellow Sea in April-May 2013. The experimental site was made up of various sediment types and bedforms due to the strong tidal currents and coastal geomorphological characteristics. The geological characteristics of the study area were intensively investigated using multi-beam echo sounder, sub-bottom profiler, sparker system and grab sampler. Acoustic measurements with a wide range of research topics in a frequency range of 20~16,000 Hz: 1) low frequency sound propagation, 2) mid-frequency bottom loss, 3) spatial coherence analysis of ambient noise, and 4) mid- frequency bottom backscattering were performed using low- and mid-frequency sound sources and vertical line array. This paper summarizes the topics that motivated the experiment, methodologies of the acoustic measurements, and acoustic data analysis based on the measured geological characteristics, and describes summary results of the geological, meteorological, and oceanographic conditions found during the experiments.
Acoustic survey for density and biomass estimate of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, was conducted in the large area between South Shetland Islands and South Orkney Islands, during November 30-December 30, 2002. Considering oceanographic and geographic properties, the study area was divided into six sub-regions. Acoustic system and frequency used in the survey were quantitative echo sounder (Simrad Ek 500) and 38, 120-kHz split beam transducers. In order to discriminate krill aggregations in all acoustic signal, difference of mean volume backscattering strength $({\Delta}MVBS)$ method of the two frequencies was introduced. Averaged krill density for the overall surveyed area was $23.5g/m^2$, and spatially averaged estimates of krill density were $44.9g/m^2$ (north of the South Shetland Islands), $30.3g/m^2$ (Bransfield Strait), $11.3g/m^2$ (near the Elephant Island), $13.6g/m^2$ (north of the Elephant Island), $18.1g/m^2$(between Elephant Island and South Orkney Islands) and $21.7g/m^2$(northwest of the South Orkney Islands) at each sub-area. In the two sub-regions with surveyed area, estimated krill biomass in the north of the Elephant Island was 0.315 million tones with a CV of 18.35% $(6,766mile^2)$, and between Elephant Island and South Orkey Islands was 1.26 million tones with a CV of 9.45% $(20,299mile^2)$. As a whole, the krill density in the early summer season was low level, comparing with that of January-February. This suggested that major krill swarms in the around South Shetland Islands were reached in the mid-summer seasons from western part of the Antarctic Peninsula, and the low krill density also affects the density variation of the krill between Elephant Island and South Orkney Islands.
The crystallinity and the structure of heteroepitaxially grown $Y_2O_3$ films on the silicon substrates deposited by Ultra High Vacuum Ionized Cluster Beam(UHV-ICB) were investigated by Back-scattering Spectroscopy(BS)/channeling. The channeling minimum values, $X_{min}$, of the $Y_2O_3$ films deposited by other methods were 0.8~0.95 up to the present, which indicates amorphous or highly polycrystalline nature of the $Y_2O_3$ films. On the contrary, the channeling minimum value of heteroepitaxially grown $Y_2O_3$ films on Si(100) and Si(111) deposited by UHV-ICB are 0.28 and 0.25 respectively. These results point out fairly good crystalline quality. It is also observed that the top region of $Y_2O_3$ films have less crystalline defects than the bottom region regardless of the crystal direction of the Si substrates. The axis of $Y_2O_3$<111> epitaxially grown on Si(111) is tilt by $0.1^{\circ}$ with respect to Si<111>. That of $Y_2O_3$<110> on Si(100) is parallel to the Si<001>. The $Y_2O_3$ film on Si(100) grew with single domain structure and that on Si(111) grew with double domain structure. From the result of oxygen resonance BS/channeling, the oxygen atoms in heteroepitaxially grown $Y_2O_3$ film on Si(111) substrate have the crystallinity, but that on Si(100) shows almost channeling amorphous state.

The hydro-acoustic technology has been widely used in not only South Korea but also many foreign countries for various scientific purposes. Unfortunately acoustic data especially collected from field surveys may contain noises caused by a variety of sources. Therefore, it is exceedingly important to eliminate noises when acoustic data are analyzed to derive quantitative results. This study introduced two methods for eliminating noises easily and effectively using post-processing software. Used acoustic data were collected on the Jinhae bay and Tongyeong coast of the South Sea in April 2015. The first method, that is the Wang's method, placed emphasis on 'erosion filter' to eliminate only data samples contaminated by noises. The second method (Yamandu's method) focused on the 'resample by number of pings' to remove pings contained noises. To substantiate the effectiveness of two methods, the mean Sv (Volume backscattering strength), mean height and depth of the fish schools detected were compared between before and after using the noise elimination methods. In the Wang's method the mean Sv was decreased from -52.4 dB to -52.9 dB, and in the Yamandu's method from -52.6 dB to -53.3 dB, indicating that noises were successfully eliminated. The mean height (1.5 m) and depth (19.0 m) were same between before and after using two methods showing that the shapes of fish schools were not changed.
The in situ target strength for the anchovy (Engraulis japonica) were measured by the split beam echo sounder system at 38 kHz. This study allowed us to detect the single echos from anchovy shoals which were dispersed during trawling operation in day time. The results of our study were as fellows: We found that the anchouy occupied about $95\%$ of the total catch from the detected shoals from which target strength data were collected. Length distribution of anchovy showed a mode and ranged from 13.6 to 15.4cm with a mean of 14.4cm and a standard deviation of 0.45cm, and weight distribution showed a mode and ranged from 16 to 28 g witha mean of 21.9 g and a standard deviation of 2.7 g. The target strength distribution of anchovy ranged from -40.7 dB to -69.2 dB in the water layer of ,$10\~30\;m$ -42.19 to -67.7 dB in the $30\~50\;m$ and -42.2 to -67.7 dB in $10\~50\;m$, showing 2 modes in each layer, respectively. Overall mean target strengths were -49.7 dB/fish and -33.1 dB/kg, averaged by area backscattering cross section $(\sigma)$, and the confidence interval for target strength was less than 1 dB. With the mean total length and the mean target strength, we drived the target strength-length relationship as $TS(\sigma)=20\;Log\;L-72.9$.
This study compared PENELOPE with measured values from low energy peak to high energy peak to reduce peak to compton ratio and continuum background spectrum using $^{60}Co$, $^{137}Cs$ and mixed volume source. In addition, the change in backscattering and compton edge efficiency was compared with that of PENELOPE through changes in the vicinity of low energy. The results from the mixed volume source are applied to the soil samples to determine how much the minimum detection limits of the soil samples are reduced in the suppression and unsuppressed mode. The compton suppression of the low energy region of $^{60}CO$ (1,173 keV) was considerable, and the Compton edge RF for the $^{137}Cs$ (661 keV) peak was 2.8. In particular, the $^{60}Co$ source emits coincidence gamma rays of 1,173.2 keV and 1,332.5 keV, so compton inhibition was reduced by approximately 21%. RF of compton edges of 1,173 keV and 1,332 keV emitted from a $^{60}Co$ source was 3.2 and 3.4, and the peak to compton edge ratio was improved to 8: 1. And Compared with Penelope, the uncertainty was well within 2%. In compton unsuppressed mode, MDA values of 661 keV, 1,173 keV and 1,332 keV were 0.535, 0.173 and 0.136 Bq/kg, respectively, but decreased in compton suppressed mode to 0.121, 0.00826 and 0.00728 Bq/kg. Thus, Compton suppressed could reduce the background radioactivity and the radioactivity contained in the detector itself.
SAR has provided weather independent images on land and sea surface, which can be used for extracting various useful informations. Recently attempts to estimate wind field parameters from SAR images over the oceans have been made by various groups over the world. Although scatterometer loaded in ERS-1 and ERS-2 observes the global wind vector field at spatial resolution of 50 Km with accuracies of $\pm$2m/s in speed, the spatial resolution may not be good enough for applications in coastal regions. It is weil known the sea surface roughness is closely correlated to the wind field, but the wind retrieval algorithms from SAR images are yet in developing stage. Since the radar backscattering properties of the SAR images are principally the same as that of scatterometer, some previous studies conducted by other groups report the success in mesoscale coastal wind field retrievals using ERS SAR images. We have tested SWA (SAR Wind Algorithm) and CMOD4 model for estimation of wind speed using an ERS-1 SAR image acquired near Cheju Island, Korea, in October 11, 1994. The precise estimation of sigma nought and the direction of wind are required for applying the CMOD4 model to estimate wind speed. The wind speed in the test sub-image is estimated to be about 10.5m/s, which relatively well agrees to the observed wind speed about 9.0m/s at Seoguipo station. The wind speed estimation through the SWA is slightly higher than that of CMOD4 model. The sea surface condition may be favorable to SWA on the specific date. Since the CMOD4 model requires either wind direction or wind speed to retrieve the wind field, we should estimate the wind speed first using other algorithm including SWA. So far, it is not conclusive if the SWA can be used to provide input wind speed data for CMOD4 model or not. Since it is only initial stage of implementing the wind field retrieval algorithms and no in-situ observed data is currently avaliable, we are not able to evaluate the accuracy of the results at the moment. Therefore verification studies should be followed in the future to extract reliable wind field information in the coastal region using ERS SAR images.
We analyzed the feasibility of detecting wave gliders moving on the sea surface using SAR images. For the experiment, a model was constructed and placed on the sea using a towing ship before and after the satellite observation time. In the acquisition of KOMPSAT-5 image, high resolution SAR data of spotlight mode was collected considering the small size of wave glider. As a result of the backscattering intensity analysis around the towing ship along with wave glider, several scattering points away from the ship were observed, which are not strong but clearly distinguished from the surrounding clutter values. Considering the distance from the center of the ship, it seems to be a signal by the wave glider. On the other hand, it is confirmed that the wave glider can be detected even at the very low false alarm rate ($10^{-6}$) of the target detection using CFAR. Although the scatter signal by the wave glider could be distinguished from the surrounding ocean clutter in the high resolution SAR image, further research is needed to determine if actual wave gliders are detected in various marine environments.
ZnS and TB-doped ZnS (ZnS:Tb) thin films were grown by traveling wave reactor atomic layer epitaxy (AKE) and characterized using materials and surface analysis techniques. $ZnCl_2$, $H_2$S,and tris(2,26,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptandionato) terbium ($Tb(TMHD)_3$) were used as the precursors in the growth of ZnS:Tb films. The dependence of Cl content in ZnS films on growth temperature was investigated using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The Cl content decreased from approximately 9 at.% to 1 at. % as increasing the growth temperature from 400 to $500^{\circ}C$. The segregation of Cl in near surface region was also observed by depth profiling using Auger electron spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopic studies showed that the ALE-grown ZnS and ZnS:Tb film during ALE process using $Tb(TMHD)_3$was also investigated. Approximately 1 at.% of O in ZnS:Tb(0.5 at.%) film which showed a good crystallinity of hexagonal 2H structure.
