In the present study, a transient incompressible viscous turbulent flow is simulated for the automotive torque converter with moving mesh technique. For the analysis, entire torque converter flow passages are modeled. Computed torque ratio, capacity factor and efficiency show a good agreement with the experiment data. The flow instabilities characterized by back-flow and wake etc. appeared in some cascade passages are shown to be propagating along tangential direction. These flow patterns are mainly influenced by the pump and turbine blade passing and can't be predicted through conventional steady simulation with a mixing plane approach. The understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a torque converter achieved in the present study may lead to the optimal design of a torque converter.

In this paper, new buck converter of a TV power system is presented. First, we devised a revised driving circuit for an emitter-coupled type buck converter, by which it is possible to reduce the material cost of transformers and voltage stress of power device. Secondly, we adopted a hybrid oscillation technique. When TV system is in off-stage, initial standby power which is necessary for remote controllable TV system is supplied by self-oscillating mode. Main power which is necessry in TV system bing on state is provided by an externally triggered oscillating mode. The switching frequency is synchronized to the oscillating frequency of horizontal deflection in TV, by which we can reduce picture noises and the size of power transformer. Thirdly, a simple error amplifier is inserted to the feed-back loop to keep the output voltage constant which means pulse width modulatio mode is added in driving part of power device. Finally, we showed by experiments that our proposed converter performs well enough to be close to the theoretically predicted values.

A sensorless motor control scheme with conventional back-Electro Motive Force (EMF) sensing based on zero crossing point (ZCP) detection has been widely used in various applications. However, there are several problems with the conventional method for effectively driving sensorless brushless motors. For example, a phase mismatch of 30 degrees occurs between the ZCP and commutation time. Additionally, most of the motor speed/current controls are achieved based on a pulse width modulation (PWM) method, which generates significant noise that distracts the back-EMF sensing. Due to the PWM switching, the ZCP is not deterministic, and thus the efficiency of the motor is reduced because the phase transition points become uncertain. Moreover, the motor driving performance is degraded at a low speed range due to the effect of PWM noise. To solve these problems, an improved back-EMF detection method based on a differential line method is proposed in this paper. In addition, the proposed sensorless BLDC driver addresses the problems by using a variable voltage driver generated from a buck converter. The variable voltage driver does not generate the PWM switching noise. Consequently, the proposed sensorless motor driver improves 1) the signal-to-noise ratio of back-EMF, 2) the operation range of a BLDC motor, and 3) the torque characteristics. The proposed sensorless motor driver is verified through simulations and experiments.

In this paper, we designed a reduced height waveguide(WG) to microstrip mode converter with a short transition length. The mode converter is composed of a mode converter using E-plane probe and a modified impedance transformer. The mode converter was designed using a probe shorted to top of a 50 ohm ridge WG. The modified impedance transformer was designed to connect the mode converter to the reduced height WG. For wide bandwidth operation, the coupling of the two parts was tuned. The structure of the mode converter was optimized for low loss and wide bandwidth, and the optimized mode converter was fabricated. The performance of the mode converter was extracted using the thru and line S-parameters for back-to-back connections, and the connector loss was calibrated. The mode converter has a right angle structure and short transition length, 7.2 mm. The mode converter shows excellent performances; the insertion loss of 0.12 dB at 15 GHz, and the return loss above 10 dB for the full Ku-band.

A custom power device provides an integrated solution to the present problems that are faced by the utilities and power distribution. In this paper, a new controller is designed which is connected to a multiconverter unified power quality conditioner (MC-UPQC) for improving the power quality issues adopted modified synchronous reference frame (MSRF) theory with Fuzzy logic control (FLC) technique. This newly designed controller is connected to a source in order to compensate voltage and current in two feeders. The expanded concept of UPQC is multi converter-UPQC; this system has a two-series voltage source inverter and one shunt voltage source inverter connected back to back. This configuration will helps mitigate any type of voltage / current fluctuations and power factor correction in power distribution network to improve power quality issues. In the proposed system the power can be conveyed from one feeder to another in order to mitigate the voltage sag, swell, interruption and transient response of the system. The control strategies of multi converter- UPQC are designed based on the modified synchronous reference frame theory with fuzzy logic controller. The fast dynamics response of dc link capacitor is achieved with the help of Fuzzy logic controller. Different types of fault conditions are taken and simulated for the analysis and the results are compared with the conventional method. The relevant simulation and compensation performance analysis of the proposed multi converter-UPQC with fuzzy logic controller is performed.

This paper investigates control algorithms for a doubly fed induction generator with a back-to-back three-level neutral-point clamped voltage source converter in a medium-voltage wind power system under unbalanced grid conditions. Negative sequence control algorithms to compensate for unbalanced conditions have been investigated with respect to four performance factors: fault ride-through capability, instantaneous active power pulsation, harmonic distortions, and torque pulsation. The control algorithm having zero amplitude of torque ripple indicates the most cost-effective performance in terms of torque pulsation. The least active power pulsation is produced by a control algorithm that nullifies the oscillating component of the instantaneous stator active and reactive power. A combination of these two control algorithms depending on operating requirements and depth of grid unbalance presents the most optimized performance factors under generalized unbalanced operating conditions, leading to a high-performance DFIG wind turbine system with unbalanced grid adaptive features.
This paper proposes a control algorithm for permanent magnet synchronous generator with a back-to-back three-level neutral-point clamped voltage source converter in a medium-voltage offshore wind power system under unbalanced grid conditions. The proposed control algorithm particularly compensates for the unbalanced grid voltage at the point of common coupling in a collector bus of offshore wind power system. This control algorithm has been formulated based on the symmetrical components in positive and negative rotating synchronous reference frames under generalized unbalanced operating conditions. Instantaneous active and reactive power are described in terms of symmetrical components of measured grid input voltages and currents. Negative sequential component of ac input current is injected to the point of common coupling in the proposed control strategy. The amplitude of negative sequential component is calculated to minimize the negative sequential component of grid voltage under the limitation of current capability in a voltage source converter. The proposed control algorithm makes it possible to provide a balanced voltage at the point of common coupling resulting in the generated power of high quality from offshore wind power system under unbalanced network conditions.

This paper investigates control algorithms for a doubly fed induction generator with a back-to-back three-level neutral-point clamped voltage source converter in medium voltage wind power systems under unbalanced grid conditions. Three different control algorithms to compensate for unbalanced conditions have been investigated with respect to four performance factors; fault ride-through capability, instantaneous active power pulsation, harmonic distortions and torque pulsation. The control algorithm having a zero amplitude of torque ripple shows the most cost-effective performance concerning torque pulsation. The least active power pulsation is produced by the control algorithm that nullifies the oscillating component of the instantaneous stator active and reactive powers. DC/DC switching power converters produce DC output voltages from different stable DC input sources regulated by a bi-polar transistor. The converters can be used in regenerative braking of DC motors to return energy back in the supply, resulting in energy savings for the systems containing frequent stops. The voltage mode DC/DC converter is composed of a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controller, a MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor), an inductor, and capacitors, etc. PWM is applied to control and regulate the total output voltage. It is shown that the output of DC/DC converter depends on the variation of threshold voltage at MOSFET and the variation of pulse width. In the PWM operation, the missing pulses, the changes in pulse width, and a change in the period of the output waveform are studied by SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) and experiments.

In this study, an automatic command mode transition strategy of direct power control (DPC) is proposed for permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) medium-voltage (MV) offshore wind turbines (WTs). Benchmarking against the control methods are performed based on a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) back-to-back type voltage source converter (VSC). The ramping rate criterion of complex power is utilized to select the switching vector in DPC for a three-level NPC converter. With a grid command and an MPPT mode transition strategy, the proposed control method automatically controls the generated output power to satisfy a grid requirement from the hierarchical wind farm controller. The automatic command mode transition strategy of DPC is confirmed through PLECS simulations based on Matlab. The simulation result of the automatic mode transition strategy shows that the proposed control method of VOC and DPC achieves a much shorter transient time of generated output power than the conventional control methods of MPPT and VOC under a step response. The proposed control method helps provide a good dynamic performance for PMSGs MV offshore WTs, thereby generating high quality output power.
