  • The characteristic of line start permanent magnet(LSPM) motor with overhang structure is analyzed using 3dimensional finite element method(3D FEM). We propose the appropriate overhang length by considering the magnetic flux distribution according to changing overhang length and manufacturing process. 3D FEM analysis is inevitable because the increase of the total flux cannot be appropriately considered in 2D FEM. In equal model specification total flux is recalculated at 3D FEM, because of considering lamination length. This paper compares the characteristic of Back-emf with and without overhang by permanent magnet that has identical volume.

  • In this paper a driving method using the microcomputer in safe driving the axial type double rotor brushless DC motor without shaft position sensor is studied. The rotor position is determined from the back-EMF passed though special filter. Starting technique which uses the motor as a synchronous motor at standstill are explained. The motor speed is controlled by changing the duty cycle of PWM. The test motor has Y-connected three-phase stator and 8-pole axial type double rotor. From the experiments, we got good performences of the proposed control system.

  • In this paper, a novel method of sensorless control scheme is proposed to apply on a single phase hybrid SRM used in high speed operation. The proposed method utilizes beneficially permanent magnet field whose performance is motor parameter independent to estimate the rotor position. The differential value of back-EMF is used to detect its peak point when there is no current conducting in the winding. Through this approach, the adjustable turn on/off position can be achieved without prior knowledge of inductance profile which is always employed by many sensorless schemes. And this paper may offer an available method to do the sensorless control in hybrid SRM used for high speed running.

  • The shape optimization of the stator and the rotor is important for electrical motor design. Among many motor design parameters, the stator tooth and yoke width are a few of the determinants of noload back-EMF and load torque. In this study, we proposed an equivalent magnetic circuit of motor stator for efficient stator tooth and yoke width shape optimization. Using the proposed equivalent magnetic circuit, we found the optimal tooth and yoke width for minimal magnetic resistance. To verify if load torque is truly maximized for the optimal tooth and yoke width indicated by the proposed method, we performed finite element analysis (FEA) to calculate load torque for different tooth and yoke widths. From the study, we confirmed reliability and usability of the proposed equivalent magnetic circuit.

  • This paper proposes a novel sensorless control scheme for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) by using a parallel reduced-order Extended Kalman Filter. The proposed scheme can obtain rotor position and speed by back-EMF that is estimated by reduced-order EKF and save computation time greatly due to using a parallel structure that works by turns every sampling time. Therefore, proposed scheme has merits of conventional EKF, and problems of parameter sensitivity are partially overcome. And proposed scheme can safely estimate rotor speed and position by using new algorithms according to driving regions. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed estimation technique, and to verify the merit of the proposed scheme, a comparison of a new reduced-order EKF algorithm with a conventional EKF algorithm has been also made in terms of computation time.

  • Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) has become a popular choice in electric vehicle applications and so of due to their excellent power to weight ratio. To obtain maximum efficiency in these applications, this paper proposes the neural network control method. The controllable electrical loss which consists of the copper loss and the iron loss can be minimized by the error back propagation algorithm(EBPA) of neural network. The minimization of loss is possible to realize eHciency optimization control for the IPMSM drive. This paper proposes high performance and robust control through a real time calculation of parameter variation such as variation of back emf constant, armature resistance and d-axis inductance about the motor operation. Proposed algorithm is applied IPMSM drive system, prove validity through analysis operating characteristics con011ed by efficiency optimization control.

  • This paper presents the sensorless position control of an auxiliary scaffolding step system for vehicles using DC motors. The designed auxiliary scaffolding step has a mechanical protector at the stop position. At this position, the scaffolding is forcibly stopped by the mechanical protector, and the motor current is dramatically increased to the stall current of the DC motor, thereby increasing the electrical damage. In this study, the estimated back EMF- and current model-based observers are proposed to estimate the motor speed and stop position. A simple V/F acceleration voltage pattern is used to operate the auxiliary scaffolding system. The estimated moving position is adopted to determine the stop position of the DC motor with the load current state. The operating current of the DC motor can be reduced by the estimated moving position and V/F acceleration pattern. At the stop position, the proposed sensorless position controller can smoothly stop the DC motor with the estimated moving position and reduced load current without any mechanical and electrical stress from the stall current from the mechanical protector. The proposed control scheme is verified by the comparison of simulations and experiments.

  • The most common current controller for the Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is the hysteresis controller. This method, however, suffers from such drawbacks as variable switching frequency, consequent audible noise and high current ripple. These disadvantages make this controlling method undesirable for many applications. The alternative solution is the PI controller. Since the fixed gain PI current controller can only be optimized for one operating point, and on the other hand, SR motor is highly nonlinear, PI controller gain should be adjusted according to incremental inductance. This paper presents a novel method for PI current controller gain adaptation which is simple and yields a good performance. The proposed controller has been implemented on a test bench using a eZdsp F28335 board. The performance of the current controller has been investigated in both simulation and experimental tests using a four-phase 8/6 4KW SRM drive system.
