  • Catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds(benzene, toluene, xylene) over transition metals/ALO-6 catalysts was investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor system at atmospheric pressure. The orders of catalytic activities for the complete oxidation of toluene were Cu>Mn>Fe>V>Mo>Co>Ni>Zn for 15% transition metals/ALO-6 catalyst system. Increasing the calcination temperature resulted in decreasing the specific surface areas of catalyst, subsequently the catalytic activity. The loading of Cu on ALO-6 had a great effect on the catalytic activity and 5% Cu/ALO-6 catalyst showed higher catalytic activity, which may be contributed to the uniformly distributed active sites. Benzene, toluene and xylene were completely oxidized to carbon dioxide over 5% Cu/ALO-6 catalyst at over $380^{\circ}C$ and 4.5 g-cat.hr./g-mole. The orders of the kinds of reactants for catalytic activity over 5% Cu/ALO-6 were toluene>xylene>benzene. As the concentration of reactant increased, the catalytic activity decreased due to self-poison of reactant.

  • Inclusion selectivity of a three-dimensional piperazine-ligated cyanocadmate host complex, $[Cd_x(CN)_{2x}\{HN(CH_2CH_2)_2NH\}_y]{\cdot}zG$, has been investigated for benzene (B), toluene (T), ethylbenzene (E), o- (O), m- (M), and p-xylene (P) isomers as the aromatic guest molecules. From the binary, ternary and quarternary guest mixtures of E and xylene isomer (X), the order of inclusion selectivity in the host complex is O>E>P>M. From the binary to quinary BTX mixtures, the order of preference in the complex is seen to be B>T>O${\gg}$P>M.

  • Adsorption characteristics of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) by activated carbon fiber(ACF) were investigated using a continuous system for benzene, toluene, xylene(BTX) generation. Studied characteristics for adsorption were equilibrium capacity, accumulative adsorption, and breakthrough curve. Operating variables were adsorption temperature(25~45$^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure(1.2~12 mmHg) of BTX. The experimental results show that the adsorption equilibrium capacity increases with increasing partial pressure of BTX and decreases with increasing temperature. It was also found that the break point was decreased with increasing partial pressure, temperature and gas flow rate due to an effect of mass transfer of adsorbate.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the surfactant solutions which influence solvent extraction from light hydrocarbon contaminated soils. Nine characteristic compounds were studied: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, mxylene, p-xylene, n-propylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and n-butylbenzene which were found in gasoline. Adsee-799 and Witbreak DRA-22 showed some extractive capacity for light hydrocarbons from soil. There was no added advantage obtained by using other surfactants in this study. No removal of contaminants from soil was observed when the surfactant concentration was 0.5 percent or below. When the surfactant concentration was 4 percent, the average recovery for some hydrocarbons was 10.8 percent, which was the best obtained at these levels. There was 10 percent surfactant contribution for methanol extraction from soil with the Witbreak DPG-482 and Witbreak DRA-22. This study provided a useful screening technique for procedures that can be used to remediate soils contaminated with light hydrocarbons.

  • Air quality monitoring is a primary activity for industrial and social environment. The government push for pollutants that must be monitored. Especially, the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which are very harmful for human and environment, should be controlled under the government policy. We have been developed a VOCs measurement system which recognize various kinds and quantities of VOCs, such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). Especially, we designed sensor array with various kinds of gas sensor and ANN (Artificial Neural Network) algorithm. The measured values for BTX have errors of-4ppm.

  • To investigate the biodegrading capability of several white-rot fungi isolated in Korea, biodegradation of BTX (benzene, toluene, xylene), phenanthrene and pyrene were tested in fungal cultures. Phanerochaete chrysosporium removed 20-30% of BTX mixture during 21 days of incubation in serum bottle. Coriolus versicolor KR-11W and Irpex lacteus mineralized 10.02 and 8.26% of totla phenanthrene, respectively, which were higher than in other studies with P. chrysosporium. These two strains also showed high mineralization rates (9.2-10.1%) for 4-ring pyrene. I. lacteus metabolized most of the added pyrene and 23.29% was incorporate dinto fungal biomass. Almost 50/5 of the pyrene was converted to polar metabolites and recovered from aqueous phase of culture. These results indicated that some white- rot fungi have higher biodegradability than P. chrysosporium and could be used in bioremediation of aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants in soil.

  • Titania gel formations were prepared by sol-gel method using titanium(IV) chloride $(TiCl_4)$, and its characteristics were analyzed by varying the $epoxide/TiCl_4$ ratio and the amount of water In the end, titania $(TiO_2)$ aerogel were prepared using supercritical drying process. VOCs such as benzene, toluene, and m-xylene (BTX) were oxidized using prepared titania aerogel and commercially available $TiO_2$, and its performance was compared. The surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter of 1,2-epoxybutane are significantly smaller than the propylene oxide. And the titania aerogels with 6 moi of epoxides have high surface areas, pore volumes, and average pore diameters. As a result of photo-oxidation, conversion of benzene was reached about $70\%$, and other reactants were reached about $60\%$ similarly. The conversion of BTX was increased as inlet concentration decreased. The reactivity of titania calcined at $600^{\circ}C$ was greater than $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. Water is required as a reactants for the oxidation of VOCs, and the continuous consumption of hydroxyl radicals required replenishments to maintain catalyst activity. The activity ratio increased with increasing reaction time when enough amount of water was present in the reactor.

  • Catalytic oxidation of benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) using regenerated metal oxide catalysts (ZnO-CuO, NiO, $Fe_2O_3$, ZnO, CrO) were investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor to evaluate their feasibility for the purpose of removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Four kinds of pre-treatment methods such as gas (air and hydrogen), acid aqueous solution, alkali aqueous solution and cleaning agent were used to find out the optimal regeneration conditions. The physico-chemical properties of the used and regenerated catalysts were characterized by BET and TPR (Temperature Programmed Reduction). The used catalysts showed high conversion ratio and the catalytic ability of toluene oxidation was in the order of ZnO-CuO>$Fe_2O_3$>NiO>ZnO>CrO. We found that the acid aqueous pre-treatment (0.1 N HNO$_3$) was the best way to enhance the catalytic activity of $Fe_2O_3$. In addition, air and hydrogen gas treatment were optimal for NiO and ZnO-CuO catalysts, respectively. Furthermore, the decomposition of BTX depends on the type of a catalyst and a gas molecule.

  • Adsorption equilibrium and intraparticle diffusion characteristics of benzene, toluene, and xylene vapors on activated carbon and zeolite 13X were investigated. Static adsorption experiments were carried out under the pressure range of 0.01~0.07 bar while changing the adsorption temperature to 293.15 K, 303.15 K, and 313.15 K, respectively. Adsorption equilibrium was analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Toth models. The adsorption energy was 5.26~31.0 kJ/mol representing physical adsorption characteristics. The maximum adsorption capacity on activated carbon was the largest for benzene, and the smallest for xylene. Toluene was in between. In the case of zeolite 13X, the maximum adsorption capacity was the largest for xylene, and the smallest for benzene as opposed to activated carbon. The effective diffusion coefficients of gas adsorbate were measured to be about $10^{-5}{\sim}10^{-4}cm^2/s$, and increased with temperature. As the pressure increased, the effective diffusion coefficients were decreased. The dependence of effective diffusion coefficients on temperature and pressure was greater in zeolite 13X particles than in activated carbon. Therefore, it is necessary to express the diffusion coefficients as a function of pressure in order to predict the precise dynamic behavior of the adsorption process using zeolite 13X where the pressure fluctuation occurs abruptly.
