  • We fabricated BSCCO multifilaments superconductor tape and evaluated the effect of twisting on the microstructural evolution and critical current. Twist pitches of the tapes are in the range of 70 - 8 mm and uniformly deformed. It was observed that grain size and the degree of texture decreased as decreasing pith, probably due to the formation of the irregular interface between Ag and filaments. In addition, critical current of the tapes decreased to 6.5A with decreasing pitch to 8 mm, showing 48% of degradation compared to the untwisted tape(12.5 A). These reduction of critical current may be related to the interface irregularity, smaller grain size, worse texture and the presence of cracks due to the induced strain during twisting processing.

  • We evaluated the effect of alloying-element additions to Ag sheath on thermal conductivity of Bi-2223 superconductor tapes. In order to evaluate the effect of sheath alloys and their configuration on the properties of tape, various combinations of Ag and Ag alloys were selected as inner and outer sheath. Thermal conductivity of the tapes was measured by using thermal integral method at 10∼120 K. It is observed that the presence of alloying-elements such as Mg, Sb, and Au in Ag sheath results in decreased thermal conductivity at low temperature. Specifically, the thermal conductivity of AgMg, AgSb, and AgAu at 40 K were 411.4, 142.3, and 109.7 W/(m·K), respectively, which is about 2∼9 times lower than that of Ag (1004.6 W/(m·K)). In addition, the thermal conductivity of alloy-sheathed tape was significantly dependent on their values of constituent sheath materials.

  • We jointed Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O multifilament tapes and evaluated their electrical properties. In order to improve connectivity of multifilarnents, single-filament tape was inserted between two multifilament tapes or multifilament was stepped by mechanical remove. The critical current ratio (CCR) and n-value of the jointed tapes were evaluated as a function of uniaxial pressure. It was observed that CCR and n-value were 24.8-29.0% and 2.5-2.8 for lap-jointed tape. On the other hand, the corresponding values were improved to 51.8-61.9% and 2.9-5.1 for three stepped jointed tape, and 63.4-67.9% and 3.4-4.2 for double MSM lap-jointed tape, respectively. These improvements are to be due to better interconnection between filaments of two tapes.

  • It was known that properties of superconducting tapes could be influenced by mechanical processing method. In this presentation, the effect of drawing method on the final properties of superconductor tape has been systematically studied. Firstly, BSCCO/Ag tapes have been fabricated via two-stage drawing method and conventional rolling process. The two-stage drawing process consists of circular dies drawing and rectangular dies drawing. Important parameters such as fill factor and critical current values of fully processed superconducting tapes have been evaluated to elucidate the effect of drawing method.

  • In this paper, the preparation of BSCCO superconducting wire by electrophoretic deposition method and the effect of suspension medium used with various solvent solutions of ethanol and buthanol for electrophoretic deposition were studied. The preheating technique in vacuum system for the superconducting powders coated on Ag wire was also investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the preheating technique was very useful to remove the influence of remains affected to the surface conditions of superconducting wire. And the adsorbed solvent solution which was existed between and on the deposited particle surfaces was almost disappeared at the treating conditions of about $10^{-3}$ Torr and around $200^{\circ}C$ in bell-jar system. By measurement of 4-point prove method, the critical current density($J_c$) of BSCCO superconducting wire was obtained at the value of more than $10^4\;A/cm^2$ in liquid $N_2$(77 K, 0 T).

  • Superconducting joints between Bi-2223/Ag tapes are fabricated by a press & reaction anneal and a multiple press & anneal. The silver sheath was mechanically or chemically removed from one side of each tape without altering the superconducting core. The exposed superconducting core of the two tapes were brought into contact and pressed so as to form a lap joint. The joined tapes were then subjected to a series of different thermomechanical treatments to achieve optimum heat treatment condition. The result from transport measurements shows that critical current ($I_c$) transmitting through joined area reaches 9A, approximately 60% of the current capacity of the tapes themselves. The critical current through joined area was improved by repeated press and reaction annealing. Measurements of the current-voltage relationship were made with several configuration of the voltage probes to characterize the critical current variation and I-V curve along the joint. Also discussed are microstructural aspects of the superconducting joint.

  • Effect of alloying element additions to Ag on thermal conductivity electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of sheath materials for BSCCO tapes has been characterized. The thermal conductivity at low temperature range(10~300K) of Ag alloys were evaluated by both direct and indirect measurement techniques and compared with each other. It was observed that thermal conductivity decreased with increasing the content of alloying elements such as Au, Pd and Mg. Thermal conductivity of pure Ag at 30 K was measured to be 994.0 W/m.K on the other hand the corresponding values of A $g_{0.9995}$/M $g_{0.0005}$, A $g_{0.974}$/A $u_{0.025}$/M $g_{0.001}$, A $g_{0.973}$/Au.0.025//M $g_{0.002}$, and A $g_{0.92}$/P $d_{0.06}$/M $g_{0.02}$ were 342.6, 62.1, 59.2, 28.9 W/m.K respectively indicating 3 to 30 times lower than that of pure Ag. In addition alloying element additions to Ag improved mechanical strength while reduced elongation probably due to the strengthening mechanisms by the presence of additive atoms.s.

The mechanical properties of alloy-sheathed tapes were also evaluated. Yield strength and tensile strength were improved but workability decreased for alloy-sheathed tapes.
