  • Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(URANS) and Large Eddy Simulation(LES) simulation of an axial flow fan are calculated upon same conditions and computational grids in order to study aeroacoustic noise of an axial flow fan numerically. Results of computed performance and predicted noise are compared with those of measurement. Both performances show accurate results with a significant difference of less than 5%. However, noise of LES result is more close to measured noise qualitatively than URANS. Levels of tonal noises of both LES and URANS are quite similar with those of measured at BPF(Blade Passing Frequency) in sound spectrum. However, as leading edge separation and tip vortex shedding phenomena of LES are showed more clearly than those of URANS, sound level of broadband noise of LES corresponds better than that of URANS, especially.

  • Recently both high performance and low noise for a cooling fan used in a server computer have been required. In this study, we measured the noise characteristics for a small cooling fan used in a computer or in a server, and compared the computational data to measured ones. SC/Tetra V10 and FlowNoise V4.3 was used for the unsteady flow field and the aeroacoustic analysis, respectively. The aeroacoustic analysis results have the good agreement with measured data within 3% errors in overall SPL. In the noise spectrum, we could find the peak tonal noise at lower frequency than 1st BPF, and confirm that the reason is caused by the asymmetry of bell mouth shape.

  • The 3-stage centrifugal compressor is used in order to measure the noise spectra of compressor, and analyze the results. Two cases are investigated for compressor noise components. Case I includes total system such as compressor, inter-cooler, motor, and Case II excludes cooling system. BPF tonal noise is important in compressor, and cooling system including inter-cooler contributes to broadband noise. Also, motor, gear box, and motor cooling fan are the second contributions to total compressor noise. Centrifugal compressor flow-field is calculated using two-dimensional grid and Navier-Stokes equations. Static pressure increases, and total pressure decreases, as air passes through the compressor components.

  • Turbo blower generates high peaks when it operates at high pressure region. The fan of the air-cleaner system, operates especially high pressure region due to several filters, generates high noise level. In this case, the tonal sound of BPF makes people annoyance. The blower of air-cleaner has several high resistance filters in its inlet area and rotates above 900rpm Moreover, for the compact design, the size of the blower should be reduced 10%. The reduced diameter of blower makes low flow rate and high noise level. In order to reduce the noise, new blade shape was suggested and optimized

  • Sirocco fans are widely used in HVAC and air conditioning systems, and the noise generated by these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the sirocco fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and broadband noise. However, only a few researches have been carried out on predicting the aeroacoustic noise because of the difficulty in obtaining detailed information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a sirocco fan. We assume that the impeller rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the impeller is incompressible and inviscid. So, a discrete vortex method (DVM) is used to model the centrifugal fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson\`s method is used to predict the acoustic source. Reasonable results are obtained not only fur the tonal noise but also far the amplitudes of the broadband noise. Acoustic pressure is proportional to (Ω)2.3, which is the similar value with the measured data.

  • Centrifugal fans are widely used and the noise generated by the these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the centrifugal fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the flow discharged form the impeller and the cutoff in the casing. However, only a few researches have been carried out on predicting the noise because of the difficulty in obtaining detailed information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to understand the generation mechanism of sound and to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a centrifugal fan. So, a discrete vortex method (DVM) is used to model the centrifugal by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic source. A centrifugal impeller and wedge introduced by Weidemann are used in the numerical calculation and the results are compared with the experimental data. Reasonable results are obtained not only for the peak frequencies but also for the amplitudes of the tonal sound.
